The fuselage is sheeted partially. It’s a stock one. I found out that the stock cowl was not painted properly; the black strips could not be aligned to the fuselage strips. After repainting (now the cowl has no red on it, I’m waiting for the Oracover red paint from Austria), I decided to change black strips to make the plane more attractive.

Other mods.
The push rods are carbon fiber 2.5mm rods. J-B weld was used to attach the clevises to the rods.
An elevator and rudder horns was also replaced. The stock elevator horns are too visible. Now nothing is visible from the top of the elevator.
I also decided to make a smoke system. The Sky-Writer is overpriced. Why to pay $80 for brushed ESC which is in the Sky-Writer? I bought the Sullivan oil pump $20 + $9 brushed ESK. I don’t calculate the Opto-Isolator because it needs to be installed with the stock Sky-Writer as well – glitches. The smoke system battery – 2S LiPo 800 ma/hr

German urethane paint came in time and the cowl has been painted. The next is the windshield. A lot of work with that windshield as well.

Anyone flying the 70" 91 size yet? I have a .91 4 stroke that needs a home and this is a favorite plane of mine. I think it's too large for the smaller .40 version.
Thanks

just to refresh this topic. I got 1 coming sometime next week, 120 size, and i have read minnflyers artical about the plane. I also contacted him and asked several questions about ths plane. going to do the same setup as he did with the g20 and all. Now my question to youall is i need feedback on this plane. how ya like it . how it flies, tips techniques, the whole nine yards. things to watch for . you know , stuff like that. i have flown the 40 sized version once and it flew great. do i need to mix a bit of rudder with the ailerons? and i am going to get a smoke system for it. I also noted that Minn placed his fuel tank in the recommended slot and not on the cg point. any reasons for this instead placing it on the cg?

I have the KMP Husky:

Wing Span.: 80in/2035mm
Wing Area.: 946sq in/61sq dm
Fuselage Length.: 53in/1350mm
Flying Weight.: 7-8 lbs.
Engine Spec.: .60 2 cycle or .91 4 cycle
Servo's Required.: 5 channels 8 servos

I have the OS 120 with the pump on it with a 15X7 3 blade and on floats and it is plenty of power.

I have almost unlimited vertical with floats on, and unlimited on wheels. Yea a 160 would be cool with smoke too. That's what I'd do with a Decathlon.

I live at 4500' and fly at about 5000' I think the 91 4 stroke would give you scale performance, and anything else, well, just more fun.

James,
The G20 (42oz) is 3oz heavier than the the CRRC26 (39oz) and if you use the original Ign a single LIPO 2100mh would work.
Use clear covering to seal the gaps on wings and tail.
I also reglued all joints with CA that could be reached.

good idea i think i can save the 3 oz or more by removing the mounting back plate that comes with the g2 and just use the holes in the engine block.i pm you Cat before i read your last post about the battery. where can i get a single cell lipo for the ignition? did not know they had such a thing. and how do u charge it? i have a cellpro lipo charger for 2 or mor lipo cells not sure how to use it for a single cell.

ORIGINAL: lrglnman
tips techniques, the whole nine yards. things to watch for
Hi lrglnman,

I have not finished it yet, but what is not good in original box.

1. Elevator and rudder push rods which are flimsy even for 2mm strange steel wire. I changed push rods to 2.5mm carbon rods. 4-40 steel musical wire is too thick for the pre-built plastic tubes. Actually you may squeeze 4-40 in, but the servos will get a lot of pressure and I do not recommend using 4-40 (2.8mm) musical wire, go with 2.4 – 2.5mm carbon or steel. There are plenty of online stores where you can order wires or rods of that diameter.

2. The white strips on the tail and the wings are made off vinyl. They are not Oracover/Ultracote strips; therefore, it’s almost impossible to tight the film without melting the strips. Good point - you may remove them easily and replace by Oracover/Ultracote ( I used Orastick).

3. The canopy is clued and taped by vinyl tape. It’s a usual Hobby King practice, which is not appropriate for an expensive ARF as Decathlon is. The canopy needs to be removed to give an access to the servo tray. When you remove the canopy the covering probably will be damage. I re-covered the nose of my plane.

4. The landing gear is a way too heavy, massive and high for the scale look and I replace mine. I use GP Extra 160 landing gear. However, this is an optional step - just for a better look.

5. You do not need to make holes in the wings to install control horns, use big Sullivan steel horns and screw them to the plywood rings on the ailerons. If you want to do the same for elevator, you have to make some mods on it. It does not have any plywood for screws. (optional as well)

6. Look at the picture how I placed a smoke tank in it

Thats good info there Eclipse. I'll keep an eye on the things u mentioned. Any idea how much weight difference between the 2 landing gears? What servos are you planning on using? I got high tech 645s i plan on using.

Default RE: New Decathlons From Seagull 91 and 120 Size!

Ok an update on Decathalon, ITS HERE !!!!!!! Got it in yesterday but Ive been under the weather for the last week and not felt like doing much. So tonight I heaved myself out to the shop to crack open the box and look at all the goodies in there. (no pics as of yet camera batteries is dead) . First thing out of the box was the tail feathers. Boy was the covering loose. looked liked the Atlantic ocean . Then came the wings, they looked fine no wrinkles. the fusealage was last and it looked ok. A few wrinkles near the tail end and that was it. So nothing a good ironing won't fix. construction was typical ARF style and im going to hit all i can reach with the glue bottle. the cowl had a fleak of paint loose near the air intake but Im pretty sure i can fix that. i happen to have a can of ultracoat white in the shop so no problems there. the only think i dont like is the windows are glue down and its gonna make working on the inside a pain. I also looked at the push rods that is in the plane, it looks like they will be fine cause the control surfaces are very small . A lot smaller that several 40 sized planes. Oh did you all look at the recommended control surface movement? that looks like a set up for failure. the surfaces barely move! is this right? Would I be money ahead to build a platform above the servo tray and place the fuel and smoke tanks on the cg? I and planning on using the Zenoah g20 on this plane. is there a Pitts style muffler out there that works good on this engine? I know i said I plan on using High Tech 645 servos . Would standard servos ran at 6 volts work ok for this plane ? The surfaces look small enough to work with standard servos. Like Futaba 3004's . any other ideas? things you would do different?

Default RE: New Decathlons From Seagull 91 and 120 Size!

I just flew my SG Decathlon. I used the stock fuel tank location and recommended throws. Depending on the CG it doesn't take much elevator to move the short fuse. I didn't have any trouble working from the door hole. Just use a short Phillips for the servo screws. I cut a hatch under the nose for the ignition battery and mounted the Life rx battery over the tank. CG was spot on 80mm. There is a nice, flat square section there with no structural members. I used a CRRC26V2 for more power. All it needed was some 1/4" spacers to set the motor distance. Used the pitts style muffler from VVRC for the motor. It might fit the G20. The 26 fit fine with minimal cowl cutting required. I have a 16x8 on it but will try a 16x10 later. Flies great but is challenging on the takeoff roll.

Do you plan making an assembly thread ?

If your servos can run on 4.8V, got with this voltage!
