NOSEN P-51 (not).. MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
BUILD THREAD P-51:
Inproved giant scale P-51, 103" span. For you guys familiar with the old Nosen P-51 kit, this plane is similiar but totaly different in plan, construction, and build. The old Nosen kits were designed for a geared .60 size glow engine beleive it or not, than stepped up to a Quadra 35 for power.
I drew the plans with a better scale outline and beefed up to take any size engine you can set into it, G62 or better, I use a Quadra 100 or FPE 5.8 for power, I had some laser cut kits to sell, the cutter raised my price so it was not worthwhile selling it but I do have plans.
I Had built a few of these, me and my friend flew one at Muncie which turned alot of heads when we had it cranking in the air!, so we are at it building two more. First step is as easy as glueing side panel out of 3/16" balsa, once the sides are made I well stack them and sand the edges so they are all even in size and shape, than formers are glued in.
I have copy of the prints for sale if anyone is interested, not cheap no hagle price is $95+ $16 for S&H in a tube con. u.s. for plans, manual, and parts outline. You want perfect? I have the ultimate two page 3D line drawing 19"x26" each for P51B/D model that even shows the slight canopy shape difference of the Dallas built P51"s, real engine & stab offsets etc. great referance to have... $20.+$6 S&H.

Informative, old school build that is large but easy to build for anyone that wants to, none of that fiberglass one time crash fuselage or fall appart arf. I kind of like the 1/3 Nieuport 28, I think the next bipe well be a 1/3 Nieuport 17.

CANOPY MOLD I sent out was damaged, the canopy I show is cut per plan outline from standar Nosen P51 canopy from Fiberglass Specialties, the frame is cut out of styrene stock and ca to the canopy than painted, also the Don Smith 1/4 scale P51 canopy can be cut and used with good result.

RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
I believe that we can obtain with some working in more '.. I saw several reviews about it ... and I saw several techniques that show how and brings a canopy directly using PVC sheets for .... My clothes bad luck in Italy and this means that in addition to the price of the canopy we should also add the cost of shipping and customs ....

OK! NOW BACK TO THE FUSELAGE:
Class is in session boys and girls, bring out the balsa and sandpaper, your teacher does not know how to spell good but he does know how to build this airplane the easy way and come out looking good!, anyways the picture shows 4 p51 sides for 2 p51's made out of 3/16" balsa which has been glued together with ca+, stacked and clamped, the edges sanded even with a 80 grit sandbar, the most important thing at this time is the location of the 1/4" slot marked at the front of the fuse to set engine thrust line, and the arrows at the back area to set the stab inccedence. Also note the former F6 again, it shows how I am constructing most of the big non ply formers out of 3/16" x 1.5" wide balsa, former outline tacked to it and cut out for proper shape, the formers well be strong, lighter, cheaper and easyier to make than cutting out of plywood.

Comming along very nicely indeed.
If I may kindly ask, , ,
The Nosen had two forward dowls to secure the one piece wing. The optional 3 piece is always a great addition.
I see what appears to be 2 forward holes in your wing.
Wing bolts maybe??, front and rear?? instead of the forward dowls?

RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
(1)- With the two side edges sanded, I lay the right side down over the plan and mark the former locations, than glue the 1/8" ply sadle on, also glue the sadle on the left side and check for position accuracy with the right side, the p51 fuselage is relativly square in the area of f3 and f4 formers so the rectangle f3 and f4 are epoxied in place and squared using tri stock in areas not to interfere with latter construction. The f3 and f4 formers are made from 1/4"x1" ply.
(2)- After the epoxy sets, the left side is laid flat, epoxy applied and the right side is set on to the left side, everything alingened and squared. Notice the top side sheeting extends about 3/32 above the top of formers f3 and f4.
(3)- Last former f15 is epoxied, after set, formers f6-f14 are instaled, three shallow cuts 3/8" appart were made at the rear sheeting behind F10 for it to curve around the bottom of formers.
1" triangle is cut in three section and epoxied in to allow curving the bottom of fuse.
(4)- Top formers and stringer installed, F2a,b and F1 need to be installed up front, starting to look like a P51D.

RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
George,
I'm just curious about how you account for the change in height of the side sheeting due to the curvature of the fuselage. Do you make the top most sheet about 3/8" or so higher or does the plan takes care of that?

What my last one looked like - Somebody made me an offer I couldn't refuse ![8D]
But, now have an excuse to try the updated plans.. lots of little tweaks to make it more scale, and easy to build.
I have to stress this - and I fly a lot of warbirds, this is the best flying P 51 I have had my hands on. Sure, not perfect scale, but a huge flight envelope - fast, no problem, slow, no problem. Landing ? Sweet. This plane shows well and is one heck of good flier.
This one had a Quadra 100 - very fast if you let it unwind.

The shrikage on the wrap does not matter, why waste time and beat your head over it? that well be taken care of in another step when the top sheeting is applied, the thing is the 1/4" notch up front stays constan regarless and that is all I care about, George.
