I had my kitbashed Stug F out, and forgot how silky smooth the low profile machined metal gears are. You barely hear them, and the tank just glides around. So I figured this Sherman needs those gears as well. I just ordered a set from across the pond. As much as I have tried I just can't get this set of gears quiet, so I gave up trying. I'll go with the aftermarket gearbox instead.

I'll have ot check EI MOD and see if they have a Sherman sound set. Maybe I pull out all the stops with this one.

Good news here Dan and good find too !
I have my Sherman at home tomorrow and I will begin the conversion straight away ! I will follow your precious advices and your photos will be of the best help.

I spent the last days to study this particular tank and found nice infos about it. With our FOV sherman, the only version that is possible to do seems to be the Firefly IC (non hybrid). I have noticed few things to modify on the FOV like the rear motor cover (no vents on the firefly), the loader hatch should not be round, the mantlet should be a little bit bigger with 6 screws all around the gun, the rear of the sherman should be completely different (no grills and shorter).

Have you noticed other differences ?

I told you in a previous PM that I planned to put Tam electronics inside but your idea of El Mod is great, I will check too with them if they had a nice sherman sound.

I officially ask for some help to find nice photos of Firefly IC (non hybrid) with dead preys tracks on the hull as additionnal armor. Thanks in advance !!

I posted another video on youtube. This shows the slow speed performance with the modification to the Heng Long gear towers. This one is noisy, and this is the primary reason for me pulling it. I have done this mod on three other tanks and they are quiet, but this one I just can't get the noise out!!!!.

I have been conversing with Elefant through email as he is about to start his RC conversion of this FOV diecast tank. Something I shared with him I thought might be good to add to this thread as it concerns those very important irreplaceble drive wheels that must not come to harm, during their removal and subsequent fitting to drive axles.

" Just a note of caution. Be very careful with the drive wheels. The Tamiya sprockets do not match up with the FOV metal tracks. The FOV sprockets are made of a tough but brittle acylic. If you over stress them I think they will just crack. I cut mine in half around the circumferance of the hub to get them off the axle. In my opinion there is no other way to get these off with out the risk of breaking them. I then drilled out the center to accept the diameter of the drive shaft. Once this was done I fit the inboard half of the wheels on the drive shafts, and filled in the void of the hub with 4 minute epoxy putty. This was pushed and molded around the flat spot on the drive shaft, and once hardened, gave me the important Key. I then drilled a small hole and inserted a piece of brass rod on the inboard wheel, facing out. A similiar sized hole was drill in the exact location on the matching outboard half of the drive wheel. When fit together the brass rod on the inboard wheel half inserts into the hole of the outboard wheel half, giving a positive lock between the halfs.

This is the method I used, but did not take pictures to include in this thread.

I spent the last few days cleaning up my workshop and throwing away a bunch of saved crap that would probably never see the light of day. You know how that goes though, No sooner do you throw out something you have been saving for years, and suddenly a situation arises that you wish you still had that crap. However my bride, is challenging my mental stability and using my workshop as an example of how I might be going over the edge !!!!! SO with some gentle jabs she convinced me there was no time like the present to put some oder to the chaos of that room. She is one of the clean sweep junkies. Everything always has to be neat and tidy. Good qualities to have in a bride, but it does involve some pain every once in a while. That once in awhile came around December 30th!!!! It took me three days, but I got the work shop looking pretty spanky. Of course the peg board is full of tools and stuff, but that is the essence of a workshop. I can't do anything about that.

I was going to include a picture or two, but my network does not appear to be working. Looks like I will have to spend some time and sort through this, as the computer that I do all my photo work on is no longer talking to the hub.

Edit

Two ways to skin that cat. Switch computers My bride is a systems person. She can figure it out!!!!!

After looking at these pictures, it still seems like I have a lot of work to do. Still lots of clutter, so you can just image what it looked like three days ago!!!!!!!

My spray both is just a kitchen hood fan exhausted outside. I use acrylic paints, so the need for an explosion proof motor is not a requirement. However when using a rattle can, I am at risk. I do however have ready access to gas detection equipment, and have monitored the Level of explosive limits when using a rattle can, and I have never reached the explosive range. HOWEVER THIS IS A REAL RISK AND ONE THAT SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED AND GUESSED AT. I have the equipment to measure this and have done so to accept the risk that I am presenting to myself.

This paint booth also acts as a photo booth. I have powerful button magnets mounted on the back wall. I have different backgrounds I can install for picture taking and these are held in place by the magnets. Of course I can remove these pictures when I go to spray paint. On the booth deck is a 600W photo light. This light is bounced off the ceiling and wall to fill in shadows. These suckers get really hot and only have a 75 hour life span. I had a fake wood picture frame that looked like real wood. I discovered it was plastic when this light melted it hanging on the wall!!!!!!!! Needless to say this experience made me very aware of the fire hazard this light presents, and now I treat it with extreme caution, only leaving it on for seconds when the pictures are being taken.

I recieved my Low profile gear boxes from England( I swear they got here in less then a week!!!!!!!) They don't fit. Not enough width in the Sherman FOV hull to squeeze them in. With a Tamiya tub you might have room as the metal is thinner then plastic. So close but not quite.!!!!!. SO I took my modified Heng Longs out and worked them over until they sound acceptable. Replaced the second metal gear with a Nylon one on the right side, and everything got quieter.

So I have a set of low profile gears. My SU 100 is still running a stock WSN gearbox. I'll save these for that.

Great to see another FOV Sherman. Nice and heavy. I really like the sound of yours. I may have to throw an ELMOD package in mine. I got the Sound Blaster in my Tiger and the thing sounds so nice. Keep us posted on the detailing.

Very nice Fireflies. Does the FOV Tiger I also have a diecast hull, in fact is it all metal, can it be taken apart and has anybody already done an RC conversion of a FOV Tiger I?

Lettuce no!

Alan.

Hallo,

I got hold of a FOV King Tiger the other day and while the turret was metal the rest was plastic, the whole hull and hull superstructure were all plastic. What a rip off!

I would be interested to find out if the Tiger I is the same.

Cheers

Alan

Are you talking about the 1/16 FOV Tiger. If that is all palstic I would have felt ripped off. Please confirm, because I was going to buy one, because I love the mass that the FOV sherman packs around.

I ran over a beetle with it and it squashed it flat.!!!!!!

Yep it was the 1/16 Kingtiger from FoV. Shame really I was hoping to do a complete conversion like your Sherman and have an all metal King tiger.

Cheers

The FOV Tiger I has a full die-cast turret, but the hull, suspension, and wheels are plastic. It's kinda odd, since it does have heavy metal tracks.
