Can anyone direct me to video of a skymaster F-18e flying with engines on the smaller end of the recomended power range? The consensus of the local guys is that I would be sadly dissapointed if I picked anything but a 36lb engine. I can't remember what power the F-18's that I have seen flying in the past had. (the last quinte meet) Opinions or video welcome.

When you say 28 pounds...that depends. If you are saying a P-120...it's gonna be a slug. If you say a Super Eagle...you are good as gold.

Michel in Santiago flew a SM F-18F on the Super Eagle and it went like a missile. I flew my F model with a Rhino, but dialed down to 30 (113,000 RPM) and it was great.

So, which engine are you considering?

Flying a Fei Bao F-18F Superhornet with a Rhino (Jet Central 36 Lb). With the gear down, it takes a lot of power just to cruise. I will say you wan to get in the 34-36 Lb range to enjoy.

Are you gonna ask the same question over and over until you hear the answer you want.

I'm gonna want that power when I test fly it for you.

Go For the 36lb engine. It has been said that you need the power round the pattern with the plane dirty and this is quite right. The one I flew was Merlin 160 powered and I was surprised how much power I carried round the pattern, 1/2 - 2/3 throttle most of the time. When I built MY SM f18e I was planning to use my P120 but quickly changed my mind and chose a Merlin instead.
