I need some help.... I have a Losi LE5000 charger. I have a losi 11.4 3400 lipo pack and a TrueRC 7.4 lipo 5000 pack. I can charge the losi pack just fine but as soon as I plug in the true rc pack the charger starts to smoke?

I thought it was my power supply so I tried a car batt, same issue, I had a friend charge the pack for me with my wires and he had no problems. I have tried to charge at different amp levels (3.4 & 5 and some in between) but still the same issue Losi has now sent me a second LE5000 charger and its doing the same thing. They don't seem to have seen this issue before and are now sending me a 3rd charger?

Any ideas, as far as I can tell I have the charger set up right and it seems to work fine with the losi batt, all I should have to do is bump it from 3cell 11.4 to 2c 7.4 and change the amps right?

Well today after getting my 3rd charger I figured out the source of the problem but I'm still not sure why? I have been using a IBM laptop power supply rated at 16v and 4.5amps, the charger says its rated for that range and this power supply was fine for charging the 11.1 lipo at 3.4amps but when I set it to charge at 4amps using this power supply the charger will smoke its self? This does not happen until I actually hit confirm on the charger and then about 5-10 secs into charging I get the puff of smoke?

Before using my power supply I took my new charger to a local hobby store and they put it on a hobby power supply and it charged my batt just fine at 5amps, then I tried my power supply again and poof the smoke again. I tested the power supply prior to putting it in the charger and it and the charger were both center grounded, the charger did indeed seem to be putting out 16 volts actually 16.5 (charger is rated to handle 18 volts per the instructions) and the laptop power supply still worked fine with my thinkpad? Bottom line I'm not sure what the problem is or why its having trouble with this kind of power supply, if your thinking of using this kind of combo I would stay away from it as I have now fried 3 of these chargers and now have a 4th one on the way. Luckly Losi has been very nice in continuing to send new chargers to me. Moral of the story I have now learned my lesson and will be buying a real power supply and plan to see if my local hoby shop will take this charger back in exchage for something else, as I would perfer an all in one charger opposed to a dedicated lipo charger.

If anyone has any ideas why this is happening I would love to hear it?

I at first thought it was high voltage (maybe the losi isn't really good for 18 volts input) , but then thought perhaps it was low voltage cause it did it when you increased the current draw on the ps. In your first post it is doing it with a car battery as well so both of those theories are out.

I'd almost be leary of using on any power supply or battery until it is figured out. I just read in the manaul in two places says 18 volts, but one place says a max of 16 volts. Strange, the charger looks very familiar (similar to a lot of others) It may be very popular , yet in a different brand.

Yea, it looks very much like many of the others I have seen at my local track. One of my friends came with a power supply that will only charge at 1.5amps and has less volts. Guessing this unit is not really rated for what it says but yes, I did burn one of these up when hooked to my car batt.

Any suggestions on what AC/DC power supply should be used with this unit?

Well just to close this thread out, they sent me a 4th charger now & I'm working on getting to the owner of my local hobby shop as they usually don't take returns or in store credits. Horizon would not do anything for me other then offer to send a seemingly endless supply of a charger that has an issue.

I ordered a Hyperion EOS0606i AC/DC Balance Charger to replace this as again my local shop could not get these though their distributor.

Oh well hopefully I have more luck with the new charger, they at least support both the batteries I own without having to buy a seperate balancing unit like the losi charger was going to force me to do.

Bottom line if your considering this charger, look at some other options as their are more adaptable/capable chargers out there for the same or less money. I decided to pay and additional 30 bucks to get a AC/DC unit that will charge everything out there to date.
