Anybody ever designed a test stand for Ramtec/Dynamax/Byron fans? This would be a great way to setup everything properly before putting it in the jet and then hoping it will work. If you have one send me a note/ drawing of how you did it. Thanks. rcnats

I would like a drawing of that also. Someone told me that one could be made out of a 4' 1x6 in about 20 min. I have been trying to think of some ideas for a good test stand. I may try using a piece of ply and some 1x4's.

Here's the 1x6" lumber idea: Buy a 4' or 6' piece of 1x6. Cut at least two pieces off the end 5" or 6" long. Screw these two pieces to opposite sides of the plank and you will find the Dynamax and Ramtec mounts pretty much fit the width of the 1x6. Use #6 sheet metal screws through the mounting holes and you're done. If you want to hold up the pipe, cut a third piece off and screw it on the centerline about 12-15" behind the fan. Put a screw in the end facing the fan (or the other end) and use an o-ring or tie wrap to hold it down. Clamp all securely to a bench or picnic table to run. On mine, I screwed two more same size pieces to each side 12-15" behind the fan and ran a cross piece of balsa or ply to hold up the pipe. This also allowed me to mount a nyrod linked to the throttle. Use fuel tubing to add friction to the nyrod. Could put a servo there if you wanted but that's more than needed. I also put some "J" screws on the side of the fan mounts to rubber band down a fuel tank at a level roughly even with the carb. Add tubing and an OS remote needle and you're done. Takes less than 15 minutes to get everything installed and set up to run. Be carefull around the fan face, it's dangerous. Use your electric starter on the fan spinner. You can be running within an hour from coming home from the lumber store. I've even attached an exhaust shroud like in the airplane, but its not needed unless you really want to run for long periods at high power. I really don't recommend doing that and I don't use this for break in. I only do this to set the idle or check a problem. I just ran a Ramtec OS .91 last month on it to check a problem with an engine that wouldn't idle. Led to finding a hole in the crankcase bottom I couldn't see with the engine mounted in the fan. Came from a piece that chipped off internally from the rotor.

Actually, I did build one for myself out of steel. There are two different tops for it-Tractor fan and Byron fan- and you simply one of the tops out of the vertical post and slide the other in. Like I say it's made out of steel but it's not to heavy, self supporting and works real well for both types of fan setups:) My neighbors just love it when I'm running something on it!:D I thought about building one from aluminum and i still might try it out. Here is what I have been using. It is just a scrap piece of plywood with 2- 6" pieces of 2x4 on their side with lag screws holding them to the plywood. The dynamax and ramtec just mount as shown in the pic. I use another piece of 2x4 for a pipe support when needed. Tank is rubber banded with some ceiling hooks for handing plants. Mark Levings

How about something like this with a thrust scale and is setup for Turbines or ducted fans. Fully adjustable to fit any size fan or turbine. :)

Any danger of O.S. large head overheating with engine on test stand or is the air being pulled over the head by the fan enough to cool. I assume byron heads are usually cooled by the air flow of the jet in flight. Kirk

Mine could definitely handle turbines. What are some dimensions of turbines? I'll see what I can make up for a third attachment and then get everyones opinion? I guess I should ask what all is need to run a turbine as well so I could make the mount for it as well. Thanks:D Myles

Safety Warning This happened to me !!!! I built a test stand simlar to the one pictured with everything hanging out in the open. Attached the Nistarter to the OS 91 and started it up. Was running it up with the igniter still attached and bam it came off-- hit the fan and blew everything in a million pieces most of which hit me on the arms and face. I had sun glasses on and the NiStarter body cleaned them off my face and broke in more pieces. Found the lenses about 50 ft away. If I had not been wearing glasses I would have lost my left Eye sure as heck. Bruises all over my arms and chest. It was a Byron set up so the fan sucked the Nistarter in to itself as it fell forward. So be carefull Jim Whitney

Check your engine to be sure it is not flooded. :( Remove the glowplug, and hit the starter, a short burst, keep your head clear of the glowplug hole. If a lot of fuel comes out, it was flooded. If not replace the plug, but leave it a couple of turns loose. this should releave the compression enough to allow your starte rto turn it over. After it has started tughten the plug and set the needles per manufacturers recomendations. :D

I have been using a Hobbico 90 starter and it won't start my OS .91 unless I loosen the glowplug a couple of turns. I have had that problem with a few other new motors also. I have to swap with a buddy and use his Sullivan until the engines loosen up enough the for the Hobbico starter to work. The sullivan starter have quite a bit more torque. Mark

gtmaxx, A picture can be no larger than 70k (70000 bytes) or 650 pixel width x 650 pixels height max. The image will have to be opened or imported into an raster image (bitmap) editing program such as Photoshop. The image then needs to be resized to the above, then saved in the .jpeg, .gif, .png, .txt, .zip, or .bmp format, and then attached in your RCU Reply. QuickTime jpegs load fast and work well. There are a number of these programs available for the PC environment. It's all about the MAC, here. And Photoshop is king. If you are unable to resize...email me the image, I'll resize and return or post it for you. I hate not seeing a pic when teased by something like "hey guys, check this out" or "how bout' something like this?". :( Best of luck to you. ;)

I have a hobbico 90 also, on a gel cell, it will turn it if I loosen the plug. A friend of mine has a heavy duty starter I am going to see if will turn it w/ plug in.

Here is a pic of my Byron test stand, 1x6 with ply former for shroud mounting, stand off for pipe clamp. Overall length 30", works great. I use a power panel and wired glow plug clip to prevent nistarter accidents such as Jim had. I had a pipe clamp come off in my Regal Eagle in flight, and the clamp and connector went through the fan, destroying the shroud. I use a Dynatron starter and lawn tractor battery to get these DF engines to turn over.

Pat: I fly with the Flying Cardinals in Northern Ky, we have a field in Hebron. I have flown at Joyce Park before, but it's been a few years. That's where I saw my first DF Jet.

I use Sullivan Dynatron starter with 24 volts. Just wire up two 12 volt gel cells. I do not have to loosen the glow plug with this setup. Rick

Dave, That is where I saw my first Df Jet too, also first turbine!! Is your field for members only? I have been flying at East Fork. There was a guy there last week that was telling us of a club he was in, in N. KY at an old drag strip, got shut down for noise, apparently a guy that was a mile away complained about the planes. A month later he moves away. I like Joyce ok, just a little far from me. East Fork now has a 350x50 blacktop runway, also blacktopped pits which is nice.

Not sure of the best place to get one but just keep yours eyes open on Ebay, RCU and RConline as that is where i picked up mine pretty cheap. I also think tower Hobbies sells them if your in need of one now. Rick
