Remove the balsa with a hobby knife.

Later use a Dremel tool to grind the area until the gear can be mounted flush with the wing.

Mix about 1/2 ounce of epoxy and microballoons until there is a thick mixture.

Glue the blocks in place and periodically check to insure they are straight.

No screws, just glue for the gear?

In this step the landing gear block is glued in. You just leave the metal gear there so you can judge how deep to push the block in the glue. It also allows you a frame of reference to see if they are straight.

In later steps there will be 3 holes drilled for 10 x 24 nylon screws.

How is your vacuum pump working?

Dude, With your excellent help it worked great! Thanks for asking.
I did my first MH17 quickie 25 wing the other day. I made my leading edge gage today and am sanding it in while not here in RCU. With luck I'll have the wing done this weekend and ready to set the incidence on the tail for practice in Julian next weekend.

Does anyone have an old Kangke F3D manual out there?

Shape the leading edge with a sharp knife first.

Later use a razor plane to level it out.

Then finish shaping with a sanding block.

The exact shape is not critical. The goal is to end up with two equally shaped leading edges.

Shape the trailing edge using a razor plane first.

Then followup using a sanding block.

The Proud Bird is a good looking model.

It is starting to look like an airplane in this picture.

Yes,

There is an elevator. It is a conventional type made of medium grade balsa.

I haven't shaped it yet.

The picture shows how it comes out of the box.

Scott,

Did the elevator come already cut so you can insert 1/64 ply around all the edges to sand to?

It was great meeting you in Phoenix, it takes a lot of effort to travel that distance. But there is a lot to learn and when you go to the big contest like that, you have many different forms of information. Great job, keep up the good work, hope to see you at the KCRC race or Wichita ...

The elevator is not pre-slotted for the 1/64" plywood. I will later install slot with a slotting tool.

I may not have mentioned that I am planning to build 2 Proud Birds. One of these will be powered with a 422 engine and the second will be powered with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40 (TT).

I am hoping that there will be some free time during the Kansas City 424 event to demo the TT powered versions. Kevin Matney and Arthur Adamisin are planning to attend and also have TT powered models.

With a little practice and some luck I will be better prepared for the next race in Phoenix. Is you probably noticed, my biggest issue is learning to land a Q-40. These lower cost birds allow me to practice my landing.

I still have a lot of learning to go.

Thanks for the help!

I bagged a second wing tonight. The following steps took me about 3 hours.

The carbon is located a little different than the first model.

There are 1/2" wide strips on top and bottom between the cores and skins.

The vertical carbon sheer web runs the high point of the wing and bends at the center. I used a 1/2 " wide by 26 inch piece for the sheer web.

The resulting carbon forms a strong beam.

Here it is bagged up and drying until tomorrow.

The only thing better than a "Proud Bird" is two.

One model will be a conventional 422 model powered with a Jett. The other will be for every day use and will be powered with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40.

The wing was pulled from the vacuum this evening.

The wing was much stiffer than the first wing. I liked the newest method so much better that I pulled the original pictures (from earlier posts) and replaced them with the ones from 3/16/09.

Art now offers a carbon fiber reinforced version of the fuselage.

The kit with carbon fiber reinforced fuselage is $140 plus shipping.

This is just what is needed for the newer Q-40 engines.

It's time to continue on the Proud Bird.

The fuselages were washed with soap and water to remove any traces of mold release wax.

The kit comes with a 1/4" thick plywood firewall. I chose to upgrade to 3/8" thick to provide a stiffer installation for the 422 class engine.

I have an older short stroke version and a newer long stroke engine. Most of today's racers are using long stroke engines.

My models will be equipped with 6 ounce CG tanks.

Installing an engine in the model is one item that looks harder than it actually is.

1) Trace the sub cowl on the fuselage side. This identifies how big a hole it will cover up.

2) Sketch a hole for the installation of the engine. Start a little small and enlarge based upon test fits.

3) Use a Dremel tool to cut the hole in the fiberglass. Just take your time.

4) Test fit the engine and adjust the size as needed.

5) I then copied the dimensions on the other fuselage and repeated the earlier steps.

Size the firewall to fit loosely.

Install the engine, spacer, and spinner.

Tape the spinner in place.

Once everything is lined up tack CA the motormount to the firewall.

While the motormount is still in the airplane begin drilling holes for the motor mount screws.

Remove the firewall and motormount and finish drilling for the screws and blind nuts. Pull them up tight and CA them in place.

Drill a hole in the firewall for the fuel tubing.
