Status: offline 		I'm thinking about building a brushless airboat about the size of a Dumas Lil Swamp Buggy. I'm planning on scaling down the Gator 24" plans. Would regular Tower Hobbies plywood (not birch like Midwest brand but much cheaper) work alright? And what's needed, just 1/16" (with the exception of a 1/8" motor mount), maybe 1/16" and 1/8" (1/8" is 5 ply and 1/16" is 1 ply on tower in case that matters)?

Status: offline 		I don't know about towers ply .The ply from the hobbies shop should be ok to use, it would be a good quality wood. Have you considered using balsa wood? It is much lighter than ply. I have built lots of balsa boats with nitro engines and one electric boat. I am not sure how cheap where you are. But why not give it a go.

Status: offline 		I used pink insulation foam and sanded it to shape. This is my first airboat but I plan on moving up. this is the cheapest easiest way IMO. Its fast to!

Thanks for posting that picture. She looks nice What prop size are you using?

I'll consider pink foam. Either that or balsa, not sure which yet. Balsa just seems much more "solid" to me.

I wonder what thickness I will need if I choose balsa, 1/16 for skin, 1/8 for motor stand, and which for the rest?

Status: offline 		I would 1/8 for the skin, the next size up for the engine stand, or use 1/8 ply. Remember that the hull should be sealed with an epoxy coat. The balsa can dint easily it also can be repaired cheap and easily. Use 1/8 for the framing as well. The boat should be sealed inside and out. This will stop any twisting in the hull due to moisture.
If you had the money you could apply one layer of 3oz fiber cloth to the outside of the hull this makes for a very strong hull and it is still a light weight boat.
If you use pink foam it is easer to shape and you can glass over the foam as well. I just prefer working with balsa. I can build in the lounge room while watching TV, I can't sand foam.(The wife would kill me)

Thanks! Im using an 8x3.8 prop on a 2s lipo. I havent tried it on water yet but its really fun on ice!
