Model-plane may have caused small blaze
Updated: 11/01/2009 02:31:00 PM PST

A small brush fire that may have been caused by a remote-controlled model plane that crashed and burned was extinguished in less than 30 minutes within the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, fire officials said today.

The fire was reported at 12:37 p.m. at Woodley Avenue and Burbank Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find a one-half acre of grass and light brush burning, said Los Angeles fire spokesman Cecil Manresa.

Winds were light in the area and three helicopters were called in to make water drops, Manresa said.

The fire was knocked down at 1:06 p.m.

"They didn't give an exact cause but there was a model airplane that had crashed in the vicinity," Manresa said.

Fire officials continue to investigate, he said.

He said no structures were threatened and no one was injured.

Hey guys there is a problem that needs the support of as many of you as we can get help to correct. The Hansen dam park has been a place where park flyers could go and fly in this very large and unused lot next to the park area it’s self. Recently and without warning the area was posted off limits to remote control aircraft. We have been flying there for many years without damaging property or injuring anyone. No one has given a just cause for the closure of this area. We are currently seeking information as to why, and at the same time we are collecting signatures at Robin’s Hobby and Smith Brother’s Hobbies to present at a city counsel meeting to address this issue in an open forum. All help will be greatly appreciated.

It looks like they're worried about RC flyers and hobbyists interfering with the nearby airport.  I just checked their website and it says:

"Kites, Rockets and R/C Aircraft: Kites, model rockets, and remote control aircrafts are prohibited due to the proximity of Whiteman Airport. Refer to F.A.A. regulation 101.13 for more information."

The message is at the very bottom on this webpage:

I got there when the fire trucks were still parked on  the runway putting out the rest of the hots spots in the field well beyond the south end of the runway.  The fireman later escorted the plane's owners out to the area and they walked back with the charred remains of a turbine jet model and spread it out on the table (engine, radio, a pair of tubes of some sort, and what looked like  pieces of fiberglass) so i'm sure the fire was caused by the downed jet.

I've been thinking about getting back into the hobby (after a 20 year hiatus) and stopped at the basin to see how the scene has changed and to watch some flying,  but everybody was grounded while the firemen were mopping up.  There were some really nice turbine jets sitting in the pits and some prop sport  planes and electric park flyer planes,  but nowhere near the level of activity of 20 years ago.

Hansen Dam

I started flying in that dirt lot in 1974.

I regularly am at Hansen Dam at the lake. I have observed the "park flyers" using that lot for the past couple of years. Truth is, there are are more than just small foamie park flyers using it. I am talking about the high speed, extremely loud EDF's that have been flying there. No glow powered plane I am aware of that has ever been flown there comes close to the extremely loud shrieking noise of the EDF's there. I would imagine the neighbors living in the surrounding hills have gotten tired of the noise. That may be part of the reason for the sudden closure, complaints of noise from the people living around the area. Strike one.

Another guess is that flying model aircraft at Hansen Dam Lake is prohibited. Well, the lifeguards tower is in a position where they can see model airplanes, being operated from that dirt field, actually flying out over the lake. Have seen it many times myself. Strike two.

And third, the EDF's and also some speedy prop jobs have been observed using copious amounts of airspace altitude (read in the flight path of Whiteman airport traffic). The LAFD helicopters come through that area routinely to land at their base at Whiteman. No doubt they have had to dodge the area from time to time because of high flying model aircraft. Strike three.

More possible reasons: The area is heavily equestrian. The riding trails are under the flying patterns of the model airplanes. It probably annoys the riders, and maybe spooks the horses. The equestrian community is a very powerful lobbying force. The have more pull than you may realize.

I am sorry to see it shut down. I had been planning on bringing my own electric park flyers there. However, I am not surprised it has been made off limits.

So, there I was, after a quick commuter flight from San Diego to LAX on my way back to Dubai. I snuck out of the airport for a quick smoke and low-and-behold.....what do I see but this .

I was actually standing there thinking.....hmmmm....my flight's in 1 1/2 hours... I wonder if I can get there and back in time....

I was at the feild yesterday and shot some photos. Andrew's plane speed control quit on takeoff. Sorry Andrew that was a nice plane. Jim's F-16 looked and flew beautifully. Alex's 26cc gas powered Zero was very fast.

Happy Thanks Giving to all my friends at the basin! I'm very thankful for such a nice place to fly, to the Valley Flyers/LA Parks Rec. and all who make it an excellent and world class field 365 days a year!

Decent morning at the basin today - fair amount of stupid as usual. First there is the jet flying way close to a full scale, passenger carrying Piper Cub and then there is a giant scale profile doing 3D in the infield.

Awesome.

thank goodness, nobody took off out of the pitts with just a few of their friends around before sunrise. it was merely an RC jet in close proximity to a full scale Piper Cub. was the jet green in color?

Finally!

I got some time to work on my new/old project that was kind of in my head for the last year or so...

Let me tell you how it all started. Some of my buddies and I take a 46 size warbird and put in a YS-91 and YS-110 in most cases we reach about 120 to 140 miles an hour in formation. Generally we have about 5 to 10 planes in the air at the same time. As most guys are we are always looking to have more power to go faster. So if I am not mistaken, this is a next level of power and speed... If you have not seen something like that before, I would suggest you do. Let me tell you, that is one crazy spectacle.

So, for this project I have chosen MLD-28cc gas engine and World Models P-40 Warhawk (46 size)

Here are some of the Picture and Specs before I start:

Any comments or suggestions more than welcome...

Speak with Alex, his current ride is a gas powered 40 size Zero and it's pretty fast, also has a WM p40 in the works too, with same gas engine.

I am hoping to complete my gas powered WM Corsair soon..
