Tom I agree with that as well. Maybe my memory is foggy but I recall a time in the late 70's when we had pattern meets that filled the place up. Flyers from all over the country attended.

I started hanging out at the basin during the summer of '76 and then began flying the next year July '77 and there was no grass in-field or shade trees in the pit area, a dirt entry road and dirt parking lot with old telephone poles as parking stops. There was corn growing every year and the restrooms were often not working. We use to go to Panos for lunch / restroom break and leave our plane and support gear at the field and maybe just bring our transmitter with us. But it was extremely rare to have anything stolen.

During the winter / off-growing season the field got plowed and then became a huge mud-pit when the rains fell. The entry road also was inpassible many weekends because of winter rains. If you got thru, then you had to find a parking spot on dry land or at least were your car won't get stuck in 6inch deep mud. Then carry your model maybe 30 or 40 yards to the pit area which would also be full of large puddles and or mud.

I remember many winters after hard rains lasting several days the small wood bleachers floated away sometimes a half mile or so. These bleachers were not attached to the ground by any means so we could move them around to suit our needs.

The summers were harsh, high temps begining as early as 9am and lasting 'till 7 or 8pm peaking around 3:00 at 105 degrees plus. And NO shade anywhere! I was 13 / 14 years old and my dad would drop me off on a saturday morning around 8 and return for me around 8pm. I got sunburnt every weekend

AND the SMOG we had back then !!! ....OMG ....the sky was light brown most of the summer days.

Even with all this, we still had many weekend competitions, Pattern (with their 800ft loops), Scale, Fun-flys, Giant Scale (when an 80inch model was HUGE and a Quadra 35 or 50cc was a boat anchor) and we even hosted national race competitions like Quickie 500 and Quarder-midgets were the turn-out was in the hundreds. As big as the pit area is, I remember during races, that you could not walk from end to end without stepping on a few models.

All good times

Regards;
Ken.

The field will be closed Monday, Nov. 14 for a minimum of 4 days for repairs to the runway, taxiways and pit area. Thanks to all who contributed donations for the runway repair and to the Foundation for funding the additional work to the taxiways and pit area.

Are they resurfacing or just using slurry with crack sealer?

The runway is now open. The work was crack repair and slurry of the main runway, extensive repairs to the taxiways and repairs in the pit with a slurry coat. Also re-striping of the runway, taxiways and pit.

A slide show can be found at the Valley Flyers homepage.
http://www.valleyflyers.com/

All the photos can be found at the Valley Flyers photo gallery on Picasa.
https://picasaweb.google.com/valleyflyers

Again,
Thanks to all that made donations to the Runway fund and to Dave Hendrics for his generous donation to the Valley Flyers Foundation which allowed us to include the taxiways and pit in the repairs.

i thought they were going to repave the runway. i guessed wrong.
just crack filling, edgework along the taxiways, and a slurry coating....
and the cracks are already re-emerging.

that's what you get with a band-aid....
a few years down the road, the cracks will need refilling again with all the thermal expansion & contraction that occurs during the hot summer months.

how much would it have cost to lay down a new layer of asphalt instead of crack filling & slurry?

So, what do you all think about the pit benches being turned sideways?

This was done to allow the addition of 8 more tables. The popularity of the Basin is such that it can often be difficult to find a place to setup. The tables are intended to give people a place to assemble their planes, but not as a spot to pit their planes. However, there's been no communcation of this in so long that the practice has mostly been lost. A lot of us, including myself, often carve out a spot on a table and are there for the durartion of our stay. It will take time and effort through example to turn the practice around.

First flight at the new Glendale field.

The Valley Flyers held an open house at the new Glendale Flyers field today. I was not able to attend myself, but photos are on the Picasa photo gallery.

I figured that was the idea behind the sideways tables, to get more tables in there. I also camp out on a table top, I don't see that changing on weekdays when I go.

The fact, that a new model airplane field is being constructed ANYWHERE in Los Angeles County is staggering! At the rate model airplane fields are being shut down across the country, and the ever expanding urban sprawl, it is just a monumental feat that Jason and the others have accomplished something I NEVER thought I would see happen in LA County ever again. A new model airplane field! Wow! Major Kudos to Jason Pakfar!
