I'd Like to thank Scott, Benny, and the entire Valley Flyers staff for having us at the Fun Fly / Swap meet yesterday.
We had a great time at "the Basin" as always.

I'll be down there flying before then, but we are looking forward the Electric event in two weeks.

...............................................
Before the heli pads were installed, we used to fly them ('84-86) at a new industrial area in Chatsworth.
I've looked for planes in the corn in the mid eighties and it was no fun, but the current weed/brush field, when it gets to be 5 ft tall is even worse ,with the catails filling your socks and shoes so bad that you have to chuck them when you return from a lengthy search.
Benny has calf high, rubber boots in the shed that you can use if you need them.

When did the corn go to sod? I am pretty sure I flew there over that corn in maybe 1987?

I believe that the sod farm started around Late '86 or sometime in '87. I think the sod was grown during the off season for the corn for the first year or two then the sod was grown pretty much all year after that. I have many more photos from that era to be scanned.

I'll look to see if I can determin by the photo dates when the sod was planted but my guess is by sometime in '87 the corn was no more.

Corey "scale" Dail has great documention going back to the late '70s for all things "basin" related.
....so between Corey and I....we should be able to piece together quite a comprehensive "look-back".

It would be a very interesting book project for someone to produce of the history of one of the country's most lasting and endearing r/c airparks. It's truely amazing that a "public" r/c airpark can exist / survive / thrive in a big city like Los Angeles.

I met all of my best friends at the Basin over the past 35+ years. It's a microcosm of L.A. with all the same diversity one expects of such a large and diverse community. Including politcal, racial, ethnical and cultural. There are many languages spoken in the pits....but out at the runway....only the language of Aviation.

Aviation, even it's miniature cousin (r/c), bridges all boundries and brings us together in celebration of one of man's greatest achievements and conquests.

LONG LIVE THE BASIN !

Ken.

It changed in the late 80's. Now it's weeds and bushes the size of trees. There was a recent fire that cleared a lot of it. It's been that way for a very very long time. The brush is almost as bad cause you get lost and the plane gets swallowed up too by a big bush. Before it was a big deal, I lost planes and would go out there in my 4x4. I'd take my shoes off, put it in low and stand on the roof looking down at the area to find lost birds and lost pilots.

I punched a hole dead center all the way through main pipe and into the dirt with a Q-500 that had a F-1 OS VR-P engine, no throttle and with a pointed Veco spinner. Went through it like a bullet!

ok, you went from corn to weeds so I figured,,,,,

PS, the 4x4 doesn't always work, a guy lost his 1/5 spitfire out there once,,he couldn't find it,, I looked for a couple hours in my lifted 4x4 ranger pick up,, never found it until a buddy borrowed a navion and circled around and guided me to it, it was half tucked under one of those a big mustard plants?, the owner was very pleased to get it back.. Looked very fixable actually

I found a few birds in my 4x4. I had a F-250 with a 460. It idled over everything no prob. I found a few other planes as well and returned them to the owners. I asked one to help me since he was out there and I found his plane. He told me to **** off.... I stopped helping after that. Everytime I went out there I came back with wheels, tanks, engines, servos, pipes.....

Corn field, sod farm, U-control paved circle way out there by the intersection of Burbank blvd. and Woodley ave., NO TOILETS, no LiPo electric flyers, no 2.4 ghz radios, no turbine jets just those glow powered ducted fan that were screechingly noisy.........and if you guys remember there were trees at the edge of the flight path as you take off down the runway heading towards the direction of the Sepulveda Dam. Somebody removed those trees because when I learned to fly at the basin in 1979 those trees were still there. The pit area was oven hot because there were no big shady trees yet shading the pit area. It was just open space. No gas engines either and Hobby People was Hobby Shack. I learned to fly on the foam Cessna 150 with a Thunder Tiger .25. I believe that those foam ARF's were made by Sureflite?????? In those days, K&B, Super Tiger(Italy), HB they ruled the roost in premium engines in those days. Those were the days when you had American made radios, servos, batteries, engines etc. etc. I never thought that the Chinese will rule the RC world. 'Nuff said.

Scanning some old photos I took in 1982. Valleys Flyers held a Sport Scale contest. First picture shows a Platt T-28, Stafford Ercoupe, and I never found out about the Mooney. The second shows 2 Jemco FW-190's of which I later got one. And a Sig Smith Miniplane.
The third pic shows the Great Garland Hamilton's Spitfire, that probably won( I'll have to check the old newsletter).
Next is the late VF member Ken Redding's nice Top Flite Mustang(red box). And then one of those unusual ducted fans(at the time) A Midwest HE-162. You can see what the Basin looked like back then.

Some photos from the "sod era". Pic's were developed in June 1989, but the images look to be taken in winter/spring transition.

Kmot,
In one of your June 1989 photo it looks like there is roof on every table in the pit area??? Is that what it is??? At present are those roofs still there for every table??? I went there at the 2012 L.A. Jets and I don't remember the roofs on every table.....but those super shady trees are super nice with the moisture the leaves release to cool the air under the branches. It really has that nice cooling effect. 'Nuff said.

The roofs are over the picnic tables just inside the fence. The "pits" tables are 4x8' benches with no roofs.
But yeah, the trees provide plenty of shade for them as well.

Oh!!! I did not realize that those were picnic tables..........my bad..........I thought those were part of the pit/worktables. I have been there many, many times but I did not realize those were picnic tables. Goes to show that I was paying attention to the RC planes and not the furniture. Again those super leafy trees are amazing. The shady branches stretch way, way outside the trunk and it is like a giant umbrella. Thanks for the heads up info. 'Nuff said.

True,, who ever picked that species of tree was a genius

Growing up in so cal I didn't really appreciate the trees,,, living here in Ohio now it is amazing to watch the transformation each year,,, as son as it gets hot in about early June, the trees are in full foliage to provide shade, as soon as it cools off the leave are gone so the sun can make it to the ground, It's a true Miracle of Nature

When I started flying at the Basin in '74 there was no shade and no trees IIRC.

Hey, you have got to check out this awesome video by Bob Tarlau:
