IT seems as low I have yet another question lol. I will be getting 4.8v nicad packs next week and I understand that the first charge should be at C10 or whatever, the packs are 800 so 800 divided by 10 is a 80ma charge rate. well I dont have a charger that charges at a 80ma. Here are the two chargers I have, both are wall chargers.

charger #1
output 4.8v@55ma

charger #2
output 6v@300ma

both of these chargers are designed to charge 4.8v packs. I dont understand why one put out 6v while the other puts out 4.8v, anyways Which charger should I use?? I have heard that the nicads like to be charged at a higher voltage then what they are, this would explain why 6v on the one charger but why not the other???

thankyou

The nomenclature on the chargers is only a rough measure of what they really put out. 300 mA for an 4.8 volt 800 mAh pack will charge it in about 3 hours or so. A bit too much for an uncontrolled charger so I would recommend using the 55 mA wall wart to condition your packs. Using the 300 mAh charger is OK if you key an eye on the pack and disconnect it when you can feel it getting warm.

ok thanks, so the 4.8v charger is ok to use. Do you know why one is 6v and one is 4.8bv?

You can run RC gear on 6v to speed up the servos, for that you need a 6v pack (which has 5 cells instead of 4). For the 6v battery you need a 6v charger!

I believe charging with the 55 ma charger would be the safer choice. Normally you would use 80 ma for 16 hours and call this a 'slow' charge as you indicated. But at 55 ma you may have to leave it on for 22 hours (or more) to get a 800 mah charge based on my 'estimate' of (800/55) x 1.5 at least during the first full, slow charge.

In any case the thing to do would be to charge the battery pack then discharge them to an acceptable minimum voltage. That way you know a few things:

1) The charger is actually charging like you think it should be charging (it is not defective in any way). Since it is plugged into the wall make sure it remains 'on' when you turn off the lights in the room!

2) The battery pack is as healthy as you are hoping it is. This gives you confidence it is accepting a full charge.

3) You will have a 'standard' to use in the future if you suspect the pack is degrading.

And keep track of when you first charged the pack so that you can tell how long it has been since you began to use them.

One thing I find a little concerning on the posts I see is when someone says 'I charged the battery pack so that cannot be the trouble'. What I HOPE they REALLY mean is 'I am certain the battery pack accepted a full charge so that cannot be the problem'. That has a different meaning to me!

1)Ok, I used a calculator I found online and it said 18 hours for charging. is this correct??

2) how do I know if the charger is charging? Should I test it with a tester?

3) wouldnt just using the battery run it down enough for another charge?

This keeps on getting more confusing....

nitro,

My advice would be throw away the wall warts, and get a good high quality charger, and either the sirius or the h9 cycler, to analyze and keep track of the battery condition. This will eliminate the guess work, and make your life a lot easier.

All I want out of this 800 mah 4.8v pack is 30 minutes powering two servos. I am not going to spend 5 million dollars just So I can charge a battery pack. So you are saying that I wont get 30 minutes out of a 800mah pack unless I get a 5 million dollar super duper charge master 5000 with coffee maker attachment?

The hobbico or the H9 are both around $60.00 and the sirius cycler or the H9 cycler are both around 60.00. $120.00 or so fills the bill.

here I will simplify it then. Is the 55ma charger sufficient for chargring a 800 mah battery pack, and if so How long should I charge it for???

Charge it long enough to put in at least 140% of the rated capacity. And this is only good for charge rates of C/20 or more.

C/20 for an 800 mAh pack is 40 mA, so your 55 mA charger is OK.

140% of 1800 = 1120 mAh, so charging at 55 mA this would take 1120/55 or 20 hours.
