I appreciate all the comments and will pass them to the decision makers. I"m sorry I missed the event, but a cut off thumb and chopped up 1st finger will cut out my flying for the rest of the year.

Mixinge 3D and other type planes is much like choppers and fixed wing. It is doable, but requires careful control so everyone gets a fair and safe shot at the airspace.

i was waiting for this discussion to come out mixing 3d and other "scale" aircraft is done successfully all over this great country and it can be done in huntsville and to exclude any particular kind of flier because you dislike their style of flying is not only wrong but is downright childish . i was there and saw the future of rc , and the past . if "the powers that be"do what i believe their going to do its not going to destroy this event but any event held at this PUBLICLY OWNED facility. so do what you must and live with the results.
its a free country ........kinda

Hey Larry, The way it was handled was totally wrong. All the hovering that was being done was well on the other side of the runway just like Chucks letter stated. It had noting in there stating how close to the runway you could get. It simply stated on the other side over the grass. That is exactly what happened. This was done for because of a couple guys complaining not for safety reasons. I for one would rather have a plane be hovering on the other side of the runway from me than I would someone making high speed pass right down the center of the runway but thats another subject.

For Chuck to change the rules on Saturday morning was wrong. There were guys there that drove 6 to 9 hours away. They all came with idea that hovering was no problem as long as it was on the other side of the runway. They also came with the idea that they could fly as much as they wanted as long as the freq and pilot station was available. If everyone had known the format ahead of time then they could have made the decision to come or not before driving there. I had no problem with the format only with the way it was presented. I can understand if guys don't like flying when there are planes hovering low. I total respect that. From what Chuck told me there were only a couple of guys that were complaining. The other thing that I didn't agree with was the time allowed. During the Aerobatic hour we had six airplanes in the air the whole hour. We had guys that didn't get to fly that were in line. During the hour and a half that the non-aerobatic guys got there were times when only one plane was in the air. Chuck should have giving equal time. I think you guys have a great place to fly and a great club but your CD needs to work on his people skills and manors. There was no heated debate between Chuck and myself. He was just rude and very abrupt to me when I simply questioned his decision. Three of your club members came up to me and apologized for what happened and the way it was handled. They also told me that they wanted us there. Anyway it will not be a problem next year. Chuck can put in the event flyer's the format that the club wants and that way everyone can make the decision if they want to come or not. I can just tell you that from all the feed back that I have received, there will be big decrease in the attendance next year and this is not the result of the 3D guys being there but the lack of them being there next year.

When you get ready, come to a 3D fly in and you will be more than welcomed. You can fly as much as you want however there will be planes hovering. Just check my website on the schedule and look for the Extreme Aerobatic Club 3 D fly ins.

That Prattville fly in looks like fun. Its 457 miles from Charlotte NC where I live but its a straight shot down I 85. Maybe ill see ya there.

Just as a note here I came in from Charlotte Nc to attend the meet I am not ,unfortunately, a member of RCRC. I flew my two meager non aerobatic planes as much as the heat would allow me. I was not one of the people to complain about the 3D flyers, and I can see your point about the time differential. If It was up to me I would have made the sessions of equal length.

As I have said before I enjoy 3D flying and my concern and nervousness came from My lack of experience. The 3D fliers I saw did a great job of flying.

The heated conversation I saw from my vantage point of 20 feet away looked heated on both sides.

Anyhoo God bless and keep flying!

Guys I am reading the comment without judgement since I am not a club official or CD. I've alerted the Board to the comments.

I've been waiting for the thread to stop or slow down in order to hear all of the comments. This is not intended to extend the thread or to solicit debate but rather to state my view of this apparently emotional issue. I was approached by one of our senior(experienced) members at the event in question who asked "What is wrong with this picture ?". He was referring to the fact that there were around five 3D airplanes flying and the rest of the flight line apparently waiting. I had been studying the same problem for a while and had noticed one pilot pull up to the flight gate and wait a while, and finally pulled his bird back to the pits. Another had started to load his plane back in his car. This situation had also not escaped notice by the CD. So why were they not flying?

The problem was not as simple as the aircraft hovering over the grass at the East edge of the runway, it was compounded by the presence of the pilots standing in the grass at the West edge of the runway along with aircraft parked in the grass on the same edge waiting to fly. This presented a bit of a 'funnel' that was daunting to some pilots for various reasons. Either they are concerned about the safety of their aircraft and/or the safety of the other aircraft and their pilots that were near the runways edge. Perhaps some of the pilots felt they were not experienced enough or their scale aircraft were not as precisely controllable as they could be. Some other reasons were given that were perhaps less compelling but the bottom line is that the flying styles of the two groups were having compatibility problems. I feel that the CD made a prudent decision to act and I also feel that the solution was a reasonable one that allowed everyone to better share the time available. Not to act would have been insensitive to at least half of the pilots. We can debate forever whether the separate flying sessions should have been differently proportioned, but it was a judgement call. I know for a fact that this was no knee jerk reaction on the CDs part as he anguished overnight before making the call. Yes, it would have been better to have this solution in place before the contest started but the extent of the problem was not very apparent earlier. While it did exist a bit last year, it did not exist at the level it was seen this year perhaps due to the increased number of 3D pilots this year.

What is the future of 3D at Huntsville? If 3D is featured at an event, it will probably be in a separate event especially for 3D. We had just such an event set for October before the CD passed away.

It is a great hobby. I hope that we can all attend the future events of our interests and continue to enjoy the hobby as well as the association of the people in it. I think we all conscientiously want our events to be fun for everyone and if we keep that as a goal as we work through our problems, I feel that they will be.

how was the 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour decision arrived at?what happened to equal time? all of the planes i saw the 3d pilots flying were scale and qualified as big birds .and i assure you anything chuck facemire does is completely kneejerk. his attitude is infamous in north alabama. where else can you get a memorial clubhouse named after you when your still alive ?
