I'm look for advice on which engine to buy for a TF Giant scale Corsair. The plans show a US 41 but that is the bare minimum.

I would like to over power the plane and possibly throw a 3 bladed prop. I true scale prop would be about 28" dia. so I'm not looking for it to be exact. I would like to throw the biggest prop I can without sacrificing performance and still keep everything practical.

I also do not want to highly modify the nose just to make an engine fit. A little modification is ok; I just don't want to end up redesigning half the airframe.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Sun,

Actually a US 41 will fly the model in a scale-like maner. A G-62 will add pep without much modification. If your set on going larger, some modifications are necessary. Let me know if I can help any further.

I would definately go with a G62 and not the US41. The G62 has good power for this size plane and if you want to fly scale you can always throttle back. Also, you will most likely need the added weight up front from the G62 since these warbirds generally come out tail heavy.

I agree with the comments on the G62 over the US engines. It has more power, plus it weighs more. Better to have more ponies up front going along for the ride than a couple of pounds of dead weight doing nothing. You can always throttle back.

Tip: On final if you are too low and slow, apply throttle very slowly. The torque of the G62 will torque roll the plane right into the ground if the throttle is applied too fast when slow.

Thanks for the advice guys,

It looks like a G-62 is the way to go. Can I throw a 3-blade prop with the 62 or should I stick with the 2-blade prop and use a 3 blade for display only.

If I can use a flying 3 blade, what size do you recommend?

Craig, I'll probably be in touch with questions as I get more involved in the kit. I just got it last week and hoping to start it with in a week or two. Anything to watch out for or 'words of wisdom' before I start? Thanks a bunch.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

I just ordered the TF giant P-47, and (Ryan?), the guy at Chief Aircraft Inc., suggested also that the G62 will be just right, with plenty of power, yet it should fit inside the cowl easily

Good luck with your 'bird...I may not get much done with mine until after the golf season.

Brian:
For a display prop, get a 4 blade -- as used on the 1 to 1 scale.
My suggestion would be the spring start G-62 w/ 2 blade prop.
It will save mucho bucks when you nose over. I fly with 22x6-10.

Wow!

Nice to run into Craig G. in the forum.

I just finished the TF giant Corsair, and installed the recommended US 41, but added the wa144 and bennett muffler.

Craig, no one I've spoken to can get the stock US 41 muffler to work. Comment?

Some suggestions, based on what I did:

Don't glass it. The 3/32 sheeting is plenty beefy. DO add sheer webbing to the spar detail at the outer panels.

The Robarts work great.

Stan's Fiber Tech for the best cowl. Best looking mod I did.

(909) 352-4758

Build light, but don't skimp in the tail. You don't need to. I only had to add 24 ounces of lead to the nose. Stick-on weights from your tire shop are grand.

DON"T paint it blue!

You won't be able to find it at the field. Look up the Thompsen trophy races, circa 1949, for beautiful schemes that really flew! Black! Red! Non-military! What a concept!

I'll post photos soon! I'll be flying her at EBRC, Livermore, Ca.

Hi Greg,

Congrats on your completion of the Corsair! I need pictures!!!!

As for the muffler, I'm not sure I follow. PM me with a more precise description and I'll see what I can do.

Again, Congratulations!

Warmest Regards,

Craig G.

To swing a decent size three blader you may check into the Mick Reeves reduction unit for the G-62. Has the added benefit of moving the prop shaft near the center of the engine making it easier to cowl. I think Bob Holman still handles the unit.

Oh. by the way, Craig and all, I do have extensive photography of the build, which I'd happily zip up and PM to any one.

Did I say this kit was a blast to build?

Looks like they're going to discontinue it, so I'd scoop one up from Tower if you're interested. It might be one to buy and shelve until you're a good enough builder that no impending disaster will flap you. Some of the sheeting and most of the control surface work is really demanding, requiring as much 'think' time as 'do' time. On the other hand, the central airframe is done with some simple concepts that are very familiar, if not done to excess. Also scary are the buried linkages in the empennage, so build with confidence. Also, get a cowl from Stan's Fiber tech in Riversice, Ca. The ABS one isn't even good for an epoxy tray.;-)

I will be flying this plane with the US41 as modified (see photo in giant engine forum), and will be reporting back. I may jump to the G62 later, especially since it bolts up without airframe mods, but Craig and I are in for the haul for the eartly flights. Craig says it'll fly scale, but well with the 41, and his name's on the plans. Hey Craig, did I mention I've never flown a warbird before? Rest assured, I'll be on a buddy cord!

I'm rambling. At this rate I'll be at the field by noon! Unemployment...

I have a G-62 on mine and it does nicely. 1/2 throttle and up is not really used except for a high speed pass. Can anybody send me a copy of the outline for the gear doors? I have a used model and don't have the outline for the gear door. I need to get a new cowl too so Stan's will propbably be getting some of my money.

I would love a copy of your pictures during building as I am in the final stages of purchasing the necessary parts.

I too have noticed that this kit is no longer advertised in their monthly flyer and that the price has increased to 299.99.

I asked Tower Hobbies why the kit wasn't listed on their main airplane kit page on the website - when all other TF kits are listed - the answer they gave was non-descript.

At any rate - the kit/plane has always received high marks - so I guess now is the time to buy before they are gone.
