Status: offline 		WHAAAT? No porta-potti?? I know Mikes predicament. I've been going through the same bit (making a living) while developing the 60 rotator! Fortunately, I'm finally very close. But give Mike a break guys! I know he is doing his best. I know the frustrations of trying to get the right parts (I finally located some!!) and other interuptions (my lathe broke down, AGAIN) but I was able to find parts, which were to come next-day-air, UPS, and showed up 4 days late! Of course, one of the parts HAD to be wrong!! As soon as the new rotator parts get here, I should have a functioning unit within a week. I'm still waiting on pins-&-needles for a shipping date. Could be Monday. Lee Robinson

Status: offline 		As a previous member posted, I too had a great conversation with Doss - it was '92. I knew of his plans and parts only AFTER I had blown up another master modeler's plans, modified and built a 100" racer for the mini-Reno events. Doss was very complimentary of the pictures I sent him of my racing mustang. We talked for about an hour and although I had my landing gear and retracts made from scratch for my plane, I decided to buy his set for a backup. I knew they were set up for a 92" aircraft so they were going to be on the slightly small size. I also mentioned to Doss, it was ashame he didn't make his an even 100" instead with the heavy interest in the 100" racing at that time and all.

Well the parts arrived, retracts and mains. After I damaged my landing gear, I had the SteedStuff mains retrofitted to my retracts by a machinist. The funny thing is, if my memory serves me correctly, the mains and lower fork were cast pieces and not machined. Therefore, it's a pretty good chance that he did make his gear. However, the retract units matched the details in his plans and they were machined from aluminum manually - still has the layout fluid in some spots.

I still have these in my garage attic - as I have lost the financial wherewithall to continue developing a competitive, scale, 100" P-51 racer. I would be glad to post some photos of the set if anyone is interested.

Also, the P51 probably didn't have "mechanical" washout because there is an aerodynamic washout built into the airfoil as it spans toward the tips. In other words it transitions from one airfoil (root) to another (tip), and is a very slight change. Doss's plans are correct in depicting the airfoil profile. Some of you mentioned that he still included mechanical washout using the rib jigs. I'll have to review my plans again - been too long to recall.

The 100" that I flew, briefly, and a 60 size rendition (although they weren't Doss's) also had the laminar airfoils of the P51 with mechanical washout in them. Both were a joy to fly. Flaps at 47 degrees during landing was like bringing the plane down on rails very slowly, with power on. Those were good times - I am now shedding a tear...

I would love to see some pictures of the gear...

Great story..

If I look at my plans.. and measure the angles.. the main wing is set to 1 degrees positive, and the tip washout sets it back to 0 degrees so 1 degree of tip washout.
The stabilizer is set to 0,5 degree positive..

The fork is definitely cast. The upper strut is machined and braized, perhaps even some JB Weld is going on at the outer door tangs. It's an interesting study indeed! Missing from the pictures is the Clippard pneumatic actuator for the retract.

As for Doss, I toast him - cheers! Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

Doss is a personal friend of mine and I have his plans,parts,landing gear, canopy and infomation on building his P-51. Due to recent loss of his dear Wife in Feb 2004 and his recovery has been slow he has been out of commission. I will contact him if anyone is interested, I believe the plans are still available.

it flies like a trainer mine had all the scale details, and i am a heavy builder 38 1/2 pounds.
flys like it was on rails, with full flaps slowed down to a walk and landed nose high like a real one.no tip stall tendencies
currently making plans to install larger engine to swing a 4 bladed prop. and have it all hidden
in the cowl.
originally i flew it on a sachs 3.2, slow to accelerate but once wound up would go like hell

Status: offline 		1 thing I hate.. in germany there is a large drawing store who also have an online shop.
They also sell the steed mustang drawings.. and since I really really wanted them I ordered them. They are over $100..
and I got 6 sheet.. crappy copies.. can't even read the text on the drawing.. they say this is how they sell them..
NExt time you speak to doss.. please tell him that.. I want him to know they are not selling his plans the way it should.. I'm not going to spend another $100 to get a good set.

His p51 is the best looking out there..

He also said that he may get his shop going and make all the accessories for it too....gear, canopy, fuse. I'll take it all. I'm looking forward to getting the plans and having them for when I get the time to do a P-51 right.

Status: offline 		I just spoke to Doss today to thank him for the plans (I got them 3 days after I spoke to him the first time). As other people have noted, he'd like to see what interest there is for his plans and accessories.

He had one fuse left (which I promptly bought) and a few sets of wheels (got a set of those too). If there is enough interest he may start producing the fuse and everything else he used to make...including the gear. You can post here or we can start another thread.

Other people speak to him more than I do, so I'm sure he'll get the word.

I read in some earlier post that you would have liked to run an 80cc in this Steed Mustang.
I have news for you, I'm importing a new line of engines that you can check on my web site. We will have a an 80cc with a planetary gear drive,

Also I spoke to Doss Steed last week and he now has an enlarged version of the Mustang which is the one I want.
