A while back I bought a Monocoupe 90A already built and promptly killed it at a flyin-(word of advice--don't try to show how slow they fly-they will snap). Anyway-Thinking about having my buddy/builder build me a clipped wing version while he builds the full wing. He really loves the plane and I was wondering how many out there have built the kits and what do you think. ---PLEASE BE HONEST! I would rather hear it from my friends than find out the hard way--
Thanks

Thanks for the offer but we are at least 6-8 months away. Got my GP Pitts and a 1/3 Pilot Jungman to do first.

I am currently browsing plans for my IN Taylorcraft, hope to get it started after I get a couple new models trimmed out when flying weather gets decent.

People who are accustomed to Sig, Great Planes, Dynaflite type plans, instructions, documentation in general typically complain of finding few of the details they expect in their IN kits. A lot is left to the judgment, experience and imagination of the builder.

That said, IN kits some beautiful birds that others neglect, and an experienced kitbasher/occasional scratchbuilder will probably find their kits to be an enjoyable challenge. I am looking forward to getting mine on the building board.

Ikon Northwest Kits..........I have built two of their kits. The
89" Taylorcraft, and the Stinson 108 Voyager. The T- Craft
is now about 8 yrs. old, and still going. This kit was not all
that bad. It did have some missing wood, or wrong sizes.
It did need some mods here and there. It did have a note
in the kit, that indicated that the upper cabin section should
be made stronger, but did not say how it should be done. I
thought this was odd, but I did what I thought was best,
and have never had a problem.

The Stinson was another thing, This kit had missing wood,
wrong size, or poor quality. The Fiberglass cowl was of very
poor, in that it was so full of holes it took forever to fill and
sand. by the time I got it done most of the panel lines were
gone. The cowl was, however a very well made, too bad it was
so darn full of holes. Parts fit to the plans is not always the best
either, you sometimes have to use your judgment as to how you
line things up.

Ikon's kits are not for the beginner. in fact you should have
a few complex kits under your belt before you tackle one.
Be prepared to do some ( Sittin and Thinkin) as the detail
on the plans can be very poor, and the instructions are
usually lacking in the same area. If you have done some
scratch building, you should be able to figure a way to over
come their lack of detail.

The one thing I will give them credit for, is that their planes
fly very well, and they also look great. Also they have a nice
line of the vintage planes of day's gone by.

Almost ditto what Rosendale said. I'm building the Ikon Beaver and as long as you plan ahead and take nothing for granted the kits are fine. You just need to read ahead and plan things out before you glue too much.

The wood is sometimes borderline, but you can replace the doorskins with birch lite ply if you're so inclined.

Their kits are designed pretty well and are definately unique. Good luck.

Search for IKON in the kit building forum. A similar thread to this has been recently discussed.

Cheers!

Sounds like there is a lot to be learned here. My buddy/builder is up to the task. He is very qualified and has been designing and building for 35 years-mostly bipes so that is not an issue. (see my post on the pups with pics in this forum for his high quality work)I just do not want to bog him down with something that will take 2 years to complete. He is very big on detail and will spend a week kit bashing something to look better than than is nessessary for me. He enjoys the building and flys when he can-I enjoy the flying/crashing and moving on. I used to love to build but times and priorities have changed. Thanks for all of the input. We will talk about it and keep you posted.

I am just in the finishing stages of building the Monocoupe 90A in the quarter scale size. My kit was one of the earlier ones produced. I found the kit more fun to build than the Nosen Champ. Emil Neely @ IKON is a very nice fellow who has been happy to answer my questions even though I bought the kit from someone else. It is as one person said to me, an 'intense build', but it is shaping up to be a beautiful plane. The snap was probably caused by the wing tip section. When built per the ribs, plans and instructions, it has a bit of wash-in. This shocked me to see after building the first panel. I contacted a local Monocoupe expert, and he checked his plane(s) and found the same condition. I have no idea if IKON meant for this to be this way. It makes for a livelier performer I guess, but I will definately be flying her down for landing, not dragging her over the fence line. It also has a scale offset vertical stabilizer, as per the original. Just think of all the time we've spent trying to get those things dead on, and then offsetting one on purpose! It has other interesting design parameters as well. I really like the doors that open. Most people I have spoken with love the way the plane flies.

I ORDERED AN IKON KIT ABOUT A YEAR AGO. MINE WAS THE PIPER TRI-PACER. I'M AN EXPERIENCED BUILDER AND USUALLY BUILD FROM SCRATCH. THIS KIT WAS VERY POOR QUALITY AND I SENT IT BACK TO IKON. THE THINGS I DID'NT LIKE WERE THE POORLY DETAILED PLANS, THE DOORSKIN MATERIAL INSTEAD OF PLYWOOD AND A FIBERGLASS COWL THAT WAS WARPED TO THE POINT OF BEING UNUSABLE.............FOR THE PRICE OF THE KIT, I EXPECTED MUCH MORE.

I have built two Ikon kits. the first was about 5 years ago. it was the 1/5 scale Cub. I liked the kit a lot. No formers or anything like that....just all 1/4 square build up with removable wings at the cabin. Ikon said 40 four stroke would fly it very scale-like. Well, I put a saito 50 on. It wouldn't lift the stinking tail!!!!! I had to replace it with an 80 four stroke so i am sceptical on their power suggestions!!! Flew nice then. Overall, it was a nice kit. I just built a new 1/5 Taylorcraft 2 years ago. Flew it 3 times. I liked the kit. Quality was good to me, but it takes a lot of care to get things just right. i would build another ikon kit. I love the moncoupe! maybe a future project. My suggestion: Build one! you'll like it!

Does anyone know who may have bought the assets of IKON NW? They had some great kits, and I donated some templates I would not mind buying back.

I was close to Emyl Neely. He and his wife worked very hard to produce some of the finest kits of old school aviation. I built many of his kits for customers around the country. Only once did I end up with an off wing. I was building the Stinson Reliant, You know the plane with the funny shaped leading edge? Anyway, the notches for the wing stringers were off or should I say that they where cut wrong. However as soon as I called Emyl, he sent a whole new set of wing ribs emmedietly. With a littil work the planes turnout to be great.
