I got some vinyl stencils from the graphics shop.

Apply as needed and mask off the rest of the airplane.

Mask off the canopy as desired.

Spray with a small spray gun.

Apply a light coat first.

Wait a few minutes to dry and finish spraying.

After the stencils are removed use wet and dry sandpaper to feather in the edges.

Some high quality 1/4" inch wide black pin stripes were applied.

The Stinger will be a good looking model.

Clearcoat will be next.

I roughened the surface of the finish with Scotch-Brite.

This gives the Clearcoat something to stick to.

The clearcoat was purchased from NAPA.

It was mixed per the directions. I mixed about 4 ounces of base to 1 ounce of hardener.

I then added a small amount of reducer to thin.

A mist was lightly sprayed on the model. It was set to dry for a few minutes.

Then the clearcoat was applied until a glossy finish was achieved.

After the clearcoat is thoroughly dry you can wet sand it with 2000 grit sandpaper.

I then buffed it out with some white rubbing compound.

The model has a "5 foot finish". It looks great at 5 foot but if I had to do over I would put a little more Spackle and primer on the wing to fill any grain before applying color.

In the next couple days I plan to test fly it.

Scott- can you get an all up weight with the TT40 installed, ready for flight? Looks good to me, and at speed everyone will be impressed. Randy

The wing weighs in at 18.25 ounces without servo.

A Tettra 4 ounce bladder tank was installed in the model.

A stick was taped to the tank to keep it from moving too far forward.

The rudder horn was made from a 6-32 screw and aileron horn.

It is just glued into a piece of wood inside the rudder.

Here is what it looks like ready to go.

It was getting late so these are flash pictures.

7/01/2009 comment -The model weighed in at 4 lbs 2 ounces. I added about an ounce of weight to the tail to balance.

The minimum weight for 422 class is 4 pounds.

The model needed some some tail weight to balance.

If I had to do it over I'd move the servos farther back in the radio compartment. Probably 2 servos in back and one in the front would work better.

Moving the servos further back should reduce any tail weight.

Super job Scott.Just like the others you've finished and shared with us. I know the I am always eger to see the techniques other modelers use to build and finish a model. You never know when an easier way to do something will pop up. Thanks for taking to time to share your work with all of us.

Don,

You can post the pictures on your site. The model flies great.

As with all test flights it was on the windiest days of the week.

Probably 25 mph winds. The wind sock was standing straight out.

It was off the ground in a few feet. It needed some up elevator but otherwise flew great.

I had incorrectly added some down elevator to the horizontal stab. If you build it with the stock tail incidence you will be correct.

The model will track around the turns without gaining or loosing altitude. It also tracks at 45 degrees all around the course.

You've got a winner of a kit. I think your modelers will like it.

Scott

Here are some notes based upon flying:

I balanced the model at 2.25" back from the leading edge of the wing. It took a small amount of tail weight to get there.

For the first flight the low rates on the elevator and elevator were about 3/16" each way. The rudder should be about 3/8" each way.

On high rates use about 1/4" each way on elevator and about 5/16" each way for ailerons.

I use about 20% exponential on ailerons and elevator.

After flying the model it identified that the stock incidence on the tail was correct.

Align the horizontal stab based upon the molding and glue it on.

Many fun flights to all!

Both the Stinger and AJ-2 take off great. The Stinger needs less rudder during take off. About 3/8" is needed for Stinger vs. about 1/2" for AJ-2.

In the air the AJ-2 and Stinger fly similar. The both track well and handle wind well.

Both models are easy to get into a smooth rhythm around the pylons. The Stinger seems to knife edge better.

As far as speed, they are both fast.

The Stinger has a thicker wing tip by percentage of the cord, but it also has a elliptical tip. Both seem to be a clean design.

I think that these two models will fly about the same speed, especially if the 9" x 6" APC is the propeller.

Both these models glide extremely well. There is a learning curve to landing these.
