Can someone recommend an outrunner that will spin a 4 Blade 95mm 65 Pitch Prop? I'm looking for high torque (thrust) not speed.

I don't really know anything about brushless motors and how there sized and I know a lot about motor/prop selection on boats probably depends on a number of factors such as slip, drag, ect. but this is more for a sub type project which will be built around the motors so I just need a general starting point. I know inrunners are more common on boats but I would like it to be an outrunner.

Thanks,

EDC

Hi EDC,

Not knowing what Voltage is going to be used and what the weight/size of your sub will be, pointing out a suitable motor is a bit tricky...

You could use this one as a starting point, if I'm not mistaken this one is used in the new Robbe sub.
ROXXY BL OUTRUNNER 5065/09 Robbe 1-4783 4783

Regards, Jan.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I should have posted more info. I was hoping to use one or two lead-acid tractor batteries, power will be feed through a tether to the sub for 12 volts. (more if needed) and it would weight rough 15-20 lbs. I would be using 2 motor setups for propulsion also. I'm not sure of the drag yet though.

If I calculated correctly, 20Lbs equals 9,1Kg.
In that case the robbe motor I suggested earlier may be slightly overkill, as the robbe sub it's intended for, weighs 19Kg (41,9 lbs), so with two of these motors you'd have roughly four times as much power available for half the weight...

Could you eleborate on what it is you're going to build? A thethered sub sounds like a ROV kind of thing, maybe dragging the thether around, requires the extra power.

Regards, Jan.

You hit the nail on the head, it is going to be an Rov and you can never have to much power because of the tether, plus there will be currents to worry about in the ocean. There will probably be 3-4 motors actually, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical and the vertical ones may have to lift extra payload (anything picked up) so extra power there will be nice to have too. It very unlikely I will ever use full power, but it will be nice to have if needed. I plan on running the motors in a housing filled with mineral oil so cooling won't be a problem but what kind of amps (in general) would something like theses motors draw?

Motors in this category can pull 60A +, depending on the load.

This one is a 1200W motor:

They also come more powerful:

Wow that's a lot of current I may have to rethink this, they make speed controllers that can handle 60 amps?

They make speedcontrollers that can handle a lot more amps, but, in an ROV, would you require forward and reverse?

If so, check on a battlebot sites for powerful ESC's that have forward and reverse. (do this while sitting down...)
