As far as modelers go, RC sailboat captains are some of the nicest and most laid back group of people I have ever met. Even so, ;) I hope to stir up some interest in one of my new interests, RC sailboats. For anyone who has not tried it, here are a few basic answers. …No, they don’t go as fast as gas or electric boats, but with a good breeze, they can move much faster than you think. …Yes, they can *almost* sail into the wind. Since, the sails basically generate lift, a sailboat can sail at an angle to the wind, even a shallow angle, given the correct sail position. …The draw, for me anyway, is the skill required for sailing, a skill which is rooted in knowledge gained by men over thousand of years. The basics are pretty easy to understand, but the skills take time to master. …Another draw for me, and something that I have not tried yet, is competition sailing. It is easy to be king when you are alone, but sailing with and against others looks like a blast. …It is a fun hobby that you can easily and safely share with your kids, even your younger children. …Finally, when my power planes are grounded due to windy conditions, and I don’t feel like slope soaring, my sailboat givens me a good excuse to go to the lake and enjoy a nice sunny, breezy day!
