Dave Lilley -> Welcome to the new Sailboat forum.... (6/10/2003 2:47 AM)

As far as modelers go, RC sailboat captains are some of the nicest and most laid back group of people I have ever met. Even so, ;) I hope to stir up some interest in one of my new interests, RC sailboats. For anyone who has not tried it, here are a few basic answers.

…No, they don’t go as fast as gas or electric boats, but with a good breeze, they can move much faster than you think.

…Yes, they can *almost* sail into the wind. Since, the sails basically generate lift, a sailboat can sail at an angle to the wind, even a shallow angle, given the correct sail position.

…The draw, for me anyway, is the skill required for sailing, a skill which is rooted in knowledge gained by men over thousand of years. The basics are pretty easy to understand, but the skills take time to master.

…Another draw for me, and something that I have not tried yet, is competition sailing. It is easy to be king when you are alone, but sailing with and against others looks like a blast.

…It is a fun hobby that you can easily and safely share with your kids, even your younger children.

…Finally, when my power planes are grounded due to windy conditions, and I don’t feel like slope soaring, my sailboat givens me a good excuse to go to the lake and enjoy a nice sunny, breezy day!

Joe Nagy -> RC Sailboats are Great! (6/10/2003 2:59 PM)

Hi Dave;

Greetings from the 'Valley of the Sun'.

I too enjoy RC Sailboats, have several. & when they crash, you don't have to carry them home in your pockets.

Been looking for an old Tom Protheroe designed 'Santa Barbara One' kit or what ever. Thet used to be quite popular many years ago, but I guess they died out.

Great to see the new Sailboat Forum, will keep watching it, and contribute if I can. Good Luck, and best regards from sunny and hot Glendale, AZ,

Joe Nagy. email: joshrl@hotmail.com

Welcome Joe!

The following is link to the AMYA.org Santa Barbara page. http://www.amya.org/stbarb.html

This page, http://www.amya.org/club206/boats.htm, has the manufacturer info for the Santa Barbara at the bottom of the page.

The only company that I know of that produces that boat is the Hartman Fibreglass Model Kits. http://www.hartmanrcmodelboats.com/pages/1/index.htm

I believe that the local club has a Santa Barbara hull for sale. I can check if you are interested.

Dave

Sailboats fit with my love for sailplanes and electric planes. I grew up in sailboats on Lake Erie. I used the old Cox 36/600 to teach points of sail BEFORE we ever got into a boat. less hazards for me. I would like to find some more people near me that like to sail, I live in north central Maryland.
