Guys need a little help please. I am trying to find a good electric setup but also want to stay as cheap as possible. I do know I need something in the same range as the AXI 4130/16. I was looking at Tower and they say the Rimfire 50-55-650 is a replacement for the AXI. Anyone got a comment? It' half the price.

Also I have a bunch of 20C 2200mah 11.1 volt lithium packs. I'm trying to get to a 6S3P or 4P 6000-8000mah. Can I link these packs I have to get there?

Thanks
Doug

Check out the Scorpion line of motors available here:

http://www.rcdude.com/servlet/the-RC-Gadgets/Categories

or here:

http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/

Innovative also has a nice cross reference chart here:

http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/Scorpion/Motor%20Comparison%20Web.htm

I have several different motors from them, one being an axi 4130-16 size that I have in my Sebart Angel 50s pattern plane on 6s. I also have a scorpion on an Ultrastick 25e that gets flown alot as it my "club funfly" plane. I have some others also, and no troubles out of them so far. Easily as powerful as, if not more powerful than, my Axi 4130-16.

From what I can read.. The Rimfire 50-65-450.. is a closer match. But Tower says they're out of stock.. Another option would be a 50-65-300, but you'd have to add batteries to spin the same props at the same speed at the AXI. With any of the Rimfires, you'd have to alter your battery and/or prop setup...

If you want to go uber cheap... You could get the Turnigy 50-65b-350 from hobbycity.com. It's almost an exact match. Hobbycity is out of Hong-Kong.. and it'll take a while to receive the order..

Some people swear that Turnigy's are great.. Don't know.. Never flown them myself.

As to your battery question... Yes, you can connect your current battery packs together in series and/or parrellel to achieve 6S3P configuration. Those batts are a 3S battery.. So to get 6S. Plug two in series. To get 3P or 4P, plug 3 or for in Parrellel.

Good luck...

Hey P-51B,

I'm planning to put a Scorpion 3014-16 on my Ultrastick 25e with a 9X6 prop. Am I on the right track?

(I apologize for the hijack)

I have a lot of AXI motors as well as some of the cheaper imports from China. The AXI motors perform better, have better durability and last longer. You get what you pay for.

I think you will probably be disappointed with the performance. On my first U-stick 25e I used the e-flite 25 bl on 3s with a 12x6. Another flyer at one of my fields used the 32 on 4s. Much better choice. Another friend used an axi motor on his with 4s. The 3s setup is good for all around sport flying, the 4s really makes it perform though.

For my second one, after looking at the charts I went with the axi equivalent which is the 3026-12. Right now I have it on 3s with an APC 13x6.5e prop. I just bought a u-bec for the speed control so I will be trying it on 4s which the motor will also handle.

I have a 3020-14 on 3s in a hyperion edge 540 and its a bit underpowered (drops in knife edge). It is a lighter plane than the U-stick 25e. As a side, the hyperion plane has VERY week gear and gear setup...I cannot recommend that plane.

I also have a 3014-18 for my PA extra, but it is not together yet...and is MUCH lighter than the U-stick.

In summary, I would recommend setting it up with a motor that can handle the 4s settup, but will still perform well on 3s. It will give options later on. Take a look at the scorpion charts on the links above, first the motor equivalency chart, then look at the performance chart on the page of the motor you are thinking about. They are reasonably close.

The only negative I have about the scorpion motors so far is that they only have the collet adapter. I do like the threaded "reverse mount" that axi sells for their motors.

Thanks for the insight. I'll take another look. This will be my first tail dragger and I am still at a beginner skill level, so I'll probably opt for the 25 power level. that would be a 3020-14 according to the chart, and I think I'll plan to go with a 12X6e prop for starters.

I would avoid the rimfires from Tower. I've had nothing but bad experience with them. If your plane decides to tip over and the motor is still spinning, it will short it out. My AXIs and even the imports from China don't do that. They are way more robust. If you're looking for a cheap setup at pretty good quality, I would check out the motors from rchotdeals.com and bphobbies.com. They sell the Tower Pro motors, the ones with the gold and silver casing. I have a bunch of them and they're good. The only thing is they are a little heavier, but cost way less. I find a bunch of 3s lipos on ebay and skysharkrc.com is now carrying wholesale direct lipos that are very good. Don't be fooled by the 15c rating. They are just as good as the Zippy lipos from hobbycity.com. And I find my speed controllers from rcmodelland.com and swanghobby.com. Both sites offer decent customer service and good pricing on many of their electric products. Good luck. Hope that helps.

China branded motors are great if its for a low to medium performance set ups. If you want to hang a 6 lbs plane and fly hard 3D all day then forget the China branded ones. You get what you pay for and each have its own purpose.

The Turnigy motors tend to go bad when pushed harder. I have used many of the DualSky motors and they are very decent for its price, I have pushed some really hard and they are holding up well enough.I have heard many reports of the Scorpions and they seem to be really good stuff, even in helis.

I still use the branded stuff for performance set ups and the non branded ones for everyday flying. No point wasting money either way.

You could also replace the 4130/16 with an e-flite 60. They look to be near duplicates.

4130/16 E-Flite 60
Kv: 386 400
#of LiPos 6-8 5-7
Diam 49.8mm 50mm
Length 65.5mm 62mm

The cool part.... The mounting adapter kit for the Axi will work on the E-flite. So you can use the Axi's prop adapter directly on the e-flite.

I know this because I have both motors, and I was was working with the E-flite just last night...
