Status: offline 		Here's a photo of the air outlet on my BF-109F. For something as heavy as yours you may want to add a spring loaded hinge on the door as we discussed since the door could not support the weight of the fuse. The spring would have to be pretty strong to make sure it doesn't close while flying. The flap hanging down should create a low pressure area that could help to draw the air through the cowl. The E model 109 did not have a very large opening, but there was a door of some type at the back. (see attached photo) In any case, it will look close enough and could help the cooling. You could also block some of the air coming into the front of the chin scoop, that way it would draw more air from the nose and past the engine.

Status: offline 		Thanks for posting the video of the flight phil. There is another video of the flight and landing out there but i have not got a hold of it yet.

Thanks for the suggestions todd. My focus now will be to manage how the air enters and exits the cowl.

I knew i was up for a challange when i started this project and i should have selected a subject with a round cowl but i have always loved the sleek lines of the 109. I have pretty much given up trying to achive my cooling with scale openings and the scale oil radiator exit and i will have to enlarge some holes and make some modifications to the bottom of the cowl.

Status: offline 		Good luck getting your cooling working Mike. With my model I was lucky enough to be able to cut a hole in the firewall and use the oil radiator outlet to help. The main reason I can get it cool enough is that the head of the 1.60 is sticking out a bit, and it's a glow motor so running it a bit rich helps a lot.

Too bad they don't make liquid cooled versions of some of these new gassers.

Status: offline 		The heat has been brutal for the past week with temps around 100 degrees so i have not had a chance to do anything outside with the 109. I have been doing some work in the shop, the original muffler was blocking a good portion of the exit air so i made a new muffler that was tighter in the fuse to leave more room for the hot air to exit.
I also made the holes in the bottom of the cowl for the entry and exit air bigger and added louvers for the exit to help extract the hot air out.

I uploaded flight and landing video of the first flight on youtube. Big phil uploaded the takeoff so i wont add that again. I have to admit this is the best 109 that i have ever flown. It tracks straight on takeoff, flies smooth and the landing is predictable. My biggest problem is that i am going to have to disipline myself on the ground as you cannot throw this thing around like the warbirds with the wider undercarriges.

My little esm 109 does that alot on landing too. Last flight it did a full 360 and stopped lol.
Love the louvers idea for cooling.

Mike did grease it onto the ground though! That thing looks to handle great as Mike has stated. Thanks in no small part to his piloting skills too!

Status: offline 		Its been some time since i have posted any progress on my 109 project.
I had a big set back last july when i had a bad takeoff on flight #6 when i over corrected on the rudder which put me into a bad section of our home clubs petromat runway which was heavily rutted from water runoff. After i hit the ruts things got ugly and i brought the plane home in pieces.

This project had consumed too much of my time with me trying to get some problems worked out for the summer season and after the crash it hit pretty hard so i had to get away from it for a while.

The fuse broke up bad but pretty much everything else came out undamaged.
I ended up piecing the fuse back together and while it was damaged too bad fly again it was usable for a plug for a fiberglass mold.
.005" aluminum lithoplate was applied completely on the wood frame then rivets and details were added.

Status: offline 		I layed up some fiberglass for the new fuse and am pleased with the results. The fuse is about 7 feet long and the weight out of the mold ended up around 6.5 pounds.
The fuse is molded in a front and back half and i tried a new technique which turned out well that leaves a fine parting line which should not require much work blending both halves together.

There will be some changes from the original design as i plan on putting the retracts into the fuse as it really was a pain to mount the wing onto the fuse in a model this big with all the wires and retract lines.
