Haven't done much in the last few days, been busy getting my IMAC bird ready to go for the season. Don't have much left to do though, mounting the smoke pump and fuel tanks are up next then installing switches and it will be ready to set the cg and put in batteries. Oh yeah, got to cut the cowl and spinner too. I'll post pics of the smoke system when I get it done. I hope to maiden it this weekend if we get a break in the weather, forecast doesn't look to good though.

Bdegan -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/11/2009 3:35 PM)

It would seem mine has arrived in Canada at the distributor. Now it just needs to make its way to my LHS.
Possibly by the end of the week. if not, next week for sure.
I have everything except the muffler for it. Apparently Slim Line is back ordered. It has been on order for about 4 weeks. Hopefully not too much longer.
We had our annual swap meet last weekend. One of the vendors sells some really nice carbon spinners. I was going to buy one until I told him I was going to paint it white. He looked at me and said "NO No nO". They are too nice to paint. But he had some back at his shop that had some minor cosmetic blemishes that he did not want to sell.
He said they would be perfect for painting and could sell one to me for half price..... bonus [:D] So I paid the man and it should show up any day.

Elevator servo installation, HS7955TG, MPI 1" servo arms, Lunsford 2 1/4" turnbuckles.

jtsails -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/16/2009 3:21 AM)

Hey guys,
sorry I haven't posted any pics, wife took the camera with her this weekend. Plane is finished, ready for a maiden. I put a slimline smoke pump in front of the tanks, beside a choke servo, and used two 16oz B&B tanks placed on their side. I'm using a single A123 1100mah battery for both the ignition and smoke pump, it mounted in the area in front of the tanks. Receiver battery is an A123 2300mah mounted beside the rudder servo. Balance is very close to the recommended point, maybe a hair forward. Used a pair of Smartfly EQs for the ailerons. Set the throws pretty much as recommended and all control surfaces are sealed on both sides. I hope to get out Wednesday. I'll post a report if it happens.
JT

Don't rub it in! It's been cold and rainy since last Friday here, I'm really tired of it. Forecast for Wednesday is really nice though, 70's sunny and calm!

Its a trade then. Wednesday is supposed to rain for us [:'(]

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/16/2009 11:45 PM)

Here is a photo of the wings with four HS7985MG servos, 1" MPI arms, and H9-2 1/2" turnbuckles and two JR Matchboxes.(I am glad I saved those matchboxes)

I am using two single 74" wingtote bags, perfect fit for both wings.

Grelker -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/18/2009 4:28 AM)

Do you think you could get both wings in one wing tote?

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/18/2009 5:53 AM)

I don't think you can get two wings in one bag. The wing bags are only 3 inches thick. 74"x20"x3" It would be a very tight fit. The wing tote bag for biplanes is for two piece wings. It is a little awkward carrying two 74 inch wingtote bags, but it does a good job of protecting the wings. It would be nice to have pockets to hold the screws and struts.

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/18/2009 6:28 AM)

Here is a photo of the SmartFly power expander, looks like the only place to install.

jtsails -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/19/2009 7:17 AM)

Okay guys,
I got to do the maiden flight today, even had a pretty good audience. All I can say is that this is the best flying 50cc plane that I have ever flown! It was obvious to everyone at the field today how stable and sweet this thing is and everyone commented on how nice it looks and flies. I know people are always making claims like this, but I gave it one click of trim on elevator and one click on aileron, then made a length of the field pass, hands off. The only thing even slightly negative that I can find is that on a bumpy grass runway, it really has a tendency to nose over. Not really a big problem, just be sure to hold up elevator when taxiing. Final weight came out at 20lbs with ZDZ60 and smoke system, and cg is right on the recommended mark. For heavy duty 3d flying you will probably want to move it back a little more, but I loved the way the plane felt as is. I might put a softer tail wheel on it to help keep the tail from bouncing too much on our rough field. Didn't try any 3d stuff, I'm not very good at it and would not be able to give a good eval anyway. I didn't get any pics or video, ya'll don't want to watch my boring flying anyway. One of the guys at the field took a couple of pics, hopefully he'll send them to me and I'll post them. You guys that have already got yours, hurry up and get it flying, you will love it.
JT

Bdegan -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/19/2009 3:10 PM)

Awesome,
Congrats on the maiden and how well things went.

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/21/2009 3:38 AM)

Can't wait to see some video or more photos. I finished the firewall "cut" for the Evolution 58, I added a little extra support for the engine box. Mounted Evolution 58gx

Bdegan -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/21/2009 3:59 AM)

My Lhs called me today to say that mine would ship this afternoon or Monday from the Canadian distributor.
I won't see anything until at least the end of next week. [8|]
So feel free to post photos [:D] Looking at any and all assembly tips and ideas [;)]

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 6:11 AM)

Here are a couple of photos of the tail and the power expander

Bdegan -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 6:31 AM)

Very Nice.
You and JT both went with Yellow and red. A fellow north of the border up here ordered a yellow and red.
I am the only person I know of so far to order the white and blue......
Hello.....anyone else out there. Don't leave me alone with all these red and yellow guys
[:D][;)]

ggroyal1 -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 6:39 AM)

Here are a few more pics. I am using HS5645 servos for the throttle and choke. Make sure gas tank is not upside down. This is the first gas plane that does not have access from the top. Everything is looking real good so far.

jtsails -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 6:57 AM)

You guys will love my report for flights number 2 and 3. Went to a Imac contest this weekend and after having problems with the exhaust headers on my Imac plane all day Saturday, I decided to fly the Ultimate for Sunday's unknown round. I got one short practice flight in before dark on Saturday, reduced the aileron throw to 8 degrees, added a little rudder to aileron mix (6% but it was a guess) and discovered that I can get the plane in my 6x12 trailer without taking it apart (hurray). Sunday morning I pulled it out and flight #3 was an Imac unknown in competition and I was the first up in my class! I won't tell you that I won but I put in a very respectable flight that I would have been happy with if I had been flying my regular Imac plane. To have done that well with a 50cc biplane on it's 3rd flight, with only very basic setup, was amazing to me. I got a ton of questions about the plane afterwards, everyone wanted to know what kit it was and who did the covering job. They were very surprised when I told them it was a stock Aeroworks. I won't be surprised if a couple more show up in this area now (Dennis, you know where to send those commission checks, right?).
I did put one more flight on it before I packed up. With rates set on the recommended standard setting, flight is very controllable but the roll rate is insanely fast at full throw, I haven't gotten the nerve to hit that 3d rate switch yet. The plane hovers easier than any other plane that I've ever tried, and my cg is still slightly nose heavy. It will roll either direction while in a hover and pull out is very good. Snaps are a blur and multiple snaps on a upline are just a blast to do. I think I'll sell my 50cc Edge from that other manufacturer because this plane is a lot more fun to fly and just does better at everything that I've tried.

Mark Dennis -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 7:24 AM)

Glad to hear it went well!

The ultimate ireally is an IMAC machine, now its time to get the 150cc for your primary sequence plane[;)]

Bdegan -> RE: AW Ultimate 20-300 (3/24/2009 3:10 PM)

JT, Awesome !!!
I can't wait to pick up mine now. Your report makes me feel a whole lot better.
Late last week I was starting to have second thoughts as there are so few...wait...No one else reporting anything besides ggroyal1 and yourself. On 2 different web sites.
Can you post a picture of the engine, etc with the cowl on ?
Thanks

Mark,
I really wish that my hobby budget could stand that! I already bought a new 35% plane for this season plus this plane and the fund is rather depleted. I'll keep on showing this one off and if I get a bunch of people buying them, maybe those commission checks will cover the big boy (just kidding). The only problem I had with using the Ultimate for that sequence was that it was harder for me to see when I had it perfectly wings level. Part of that was the plane and part of it was that the sequence needed to be started farther out than normal. The second and third maneuvers were cross box and I got it too far out.

Bdegan,
Sorry about the lack of pics lately, my wife has been using the camera for my daughters stuff and my old digital has gone completely kaput. I'll get you some later of the front end and the smoke system. I'm working on the exhaust system on the Imac plane now and have another contest this weekend, so it's got to get fixed and tested by Thursday.
