I just got a "long can" 400 motor from www.newcreations-rc.com.
Here is their description if you need to know more.

http://www.newcreations-rc.com/Prod...emnumber=FK5202

When running the motor, I can see sparks from the brush/com.
Is this normal?? Am I going to hurt the motor If I continue to run it??
I have not flown it and have only run it for about 10 seconds at full power.

I am running an 8 cell pack.

It acts the same with both a white gunther prop labeled 125 by 110 and with a carbon reinforced prop that looks nearly identical but was labeled "speed 400 zagi prop".

I was told to run it unloaded on 2 cells for about 5 minutes to break it in and have done so already. At such a low power it does not spark, but when hooked up to my 8 cell pack and speed control, (with a prop on) it sparks from about 1/2 throttle and up.

The motor is supposed to already be timed as a pusher.

You posted the exact same question on the Ezone. Here's the answer:

Your brushes are not fully broken in yet. Running them on two D cells is not nearly enough time to get them properly rounded to the shape of the commutator. They're still mostly square, and as such, only contact the commutator on a small area. The brush surface immediately around that area is close enough to the commutator that the electricity can jump the gap, causing the sparks you see.

No, you won't damage your motor. People fly motors without breaking them in all the time. However, it may not perform as well, and may not last as long. The sparks will tend to leave burns on the commutator which, over time, will slowly degrade the performance of the motor.

YES YES seat the brushes breakin the motor no prop or load.
I prefer a glass of water low rpm maybe 1or 2 cells for a hour
then take a light and look in C the brushes. CU
