I was out flying last weekend and managed to start my engine backwards. My starter was plugged in the correct way because it was on the second or third flight of the day that it started backwards. How is this possible?
Hawk 4
OS 32sxh

Thanks, Reuben

they say this usually happens because you were running rich. Causes the engine to somehow kickback and turn backwards. try leaning it out a bit.

That is a good point. I am almost two gallons in on this engine. I started at about 1.5 turns on the needle. I am about 1.25 now. What is a good setting. I think I was told but the guys at my LHS that 1 full turn is the "correct" spot. What do you think.

Thanks, Reuben

Be cautious here. You do not want to lean your main needle too much for starting, as it may then be too lean for upstairs.

Please note that the main needle is for upstairs (carb fully open). Once that is set, then the idle screw (on the opposite side, inside the center of the throotle arm) adjusts for the proper hover and idle setting.

As you start with the engine at idle, this is the needle you should adjust for starting once the main needle is set. It is very sensitive so only lean as little as possible at 1/8 turn increments. If you go too lean it may cause the engine too hover at too lean a setting. This may cause the engine to run rough due to ignition of the fuel while the piston is still moving upwards and compressing the fuel/air charge. In turn, this will result in a high frequency vibration that you will not necessarily be able to see, but your fuel will feel it and may start to foam in the hover.

Reuben,
Are you using a start wand with a one-way bearing in it?

No... I am using the one from Century that does not have the bearing. It seems to start and idle great. I have not moved the low needle form the factory position.

Thanks, Reuben

Tubes,
The one-way bearing start wand is a MUST on the Century 30/50 start system. This is what causes 90% of the backwards running starts AND premature fan failures. I believe it is in the manual as a tip that you should use a start wand with a one-way bearing because the start system on the heli doesn't have one. What happens is once the engine starts it tries to drive your starter motor because it's spinning faster than the motor. The second you pull it out the internal combustion process get's unloaded and CAN reverse on the next stroke.

A rich low end is a contributing factor but on our helis ALL low end mixtures are rich. So, don't lean the motor out to much just to compensate for the start up routine. Get yourself a startwand like the CN0427 (available at www.heli-world.com )

or one that clamps to the starter motor shaft(available at www.ronlund.com ).

crap i dont have one with a one way bearing =/
Is it really that big of a problem?
I mean isnt the proper way to start, stick in the starter, turn the starter and keep the starter goin while disengaging? THen turn it off? Wont that prevent the backwards starting?

Danny,
It really is that important. Some may disagree with me but it's in the manual and if anything you put to much wear on the fan. When the engine starts running it starts to push the starter motor and that acts like a jack-hammer to the slots in the fan.

Get a one-way wand and your starting will be less likely to run backwards, start smoother, and prevent fan damage. All helis that don't have a one-way bearing somewhere in the heli need a start wand with one.
