I made a run of Mach 1, Compensator and Sweetater canopies today. Pictured is one of my vacuum forming machines and the canopies. I hope to get the shear webs installed in the wing today if time permits. More to follow.

I was able to get 1/2 of the shear webs installed tonight. The rest will be completed in the next day or two. The pnuematic air lines and servo extensions will be routed and placed in the wing also.

More to follow.

Thanks

Leo,

I've got to get one of those vacuum forming machines.... but for now, the oven and the vacuum box will have to do. Looks like you're having fun getting into the kit manufacturing business. Let me know when you've got them ready.

Hi Dan,

The vacuum forming machine in the picture is fairly simple to operate. The other machine I have is much more complicated. I will be adding more classic pattern canopies over time and making other parts that can be vacuum formed. I have a web site, but not sure if I should post the address or not? Dan @ Laser technologies is very skilled at cutting the short kits. He tells me that he will be adding more classic pattern planes to his line in the future.

Leo,

I think it is legal per RCU rules if someone asks.... so....

Do you have a website? We really appreciate what you are doing for these classic planes!

Dave,

Since you asked: www.klasskotemo.com

Pete,

I will send you a PM regarding the Sweetater Canopy. No problem. Dan at Laser Technologies has had a Laser cut Sweetater for awhile. I have been building one. The parts fit is awesome.

Hi Guys,

I worked on mounting the B&D retracts today. Dan left room for you to shim the retracts to skin level if needed depending on the brand of retract you are using. I added some ply as shims on mine. After mounting the retract units I added some 1/16" balsa around them and sanded flush with the rib profiles. The 1/4" square stock was added per plans to support the sheeting over the center section under the fuse. The shear webs have been completed. Next time I will be running the air lines, servo extension wires and working on the aileron servo mounting.

Hi guys,

Dan just sent me an email saying that he shipped the Mach 1 short kits today that had been ordered and paid for. I should be able to get back to work on this Mach 1 in the next day or two.

Dan emailed me said mine was on the way. Dan was very accommodating, I already had the foam wing and stab, he charged me just for the fuselage, plans and canopy. Not many people would do that, all or nothing! is what a some people would say. Thanks Dan

Pete,

I did make the canopies that Dan is shipping with his short kits. Post pictures of yours as you build it. I have all weekend to work on mine. Today was spent making three new Compensator plugs out of stronger material. The others were made from plaster and were too brittle. Ask me how I know.

Hello Everyone,

I spent today making the remaining parts required to complete the build. Dan sent me an updated plan sheet that he sent out with his short kits. They are very detailed and spell things out clearly. The rudder parts were also completed. I detailed part of the layout on the wood showing the cross grain on the upper part of the fin. Here are a few pictures. I should have more to follow later today when some glue has dried.

Hi Guys,

Finally! I now have everything I need to move forward and get this project going. I made the elevators per plans. They just need final sanding to shape the airfoil. The ailerons were cut out of 1/2" x 2" x 36" TE stock. I took some additional pictures showing everything laid out on the table. More to follow.

Leo,

Could you give us an idea of the materials required over and above the short kit?

It would be helpful for some of us.

ccpetersen,

I will post a list of the block sizes, stick sizes and quantites in the next day or two. Some are easy to figure out from the plans, others are not. Dan at Laser Technologies is considering drawing block templates in CAD. Not sure when he will make that decision.

ccpetersen,

Here is a listing of blocks and strips. This should help.

Balsa:

Top blocks, 2 pcs: 9/16" x 2" x 30 1/4". Bottom blocks under fuel tank: 2 pcs: 3/8" x 2" x 8 5/8". Front top blocks above tank: 2pcs 2 1/16" x 8 9/16 x 15/16".

Rear fuse block, 1 pc 7" x 2" x 15/16". Botom cowl blocks, 2 pcs 3 11/16" x 2" x 15/16". Top cowl block, above/around engine: 5" x 3 1/4" x 7/8" taper from 7/8' to zero, looks like a door stop. Filler blocks between F1 & F2: 2 pcs 8 5/8" x 5/8" x 5/16". 2 pcs: triangular stock: 1/2" x 8 3/8".

3/8" Sqaure stock: 2 pcs: 17 7/8", 2 pcs: 12 5/8", 2 pcs: 30 1/2". Tri stock: 2 pcs: 3/8" x 36".

1 pc: 1/8" x 1/4" x 36". Fuse bottom block: 3/8" x 3 1/4" x 15 5/8".

1 pc: 1/4" x 3/8" x 12. The front cowling blocks are 3/8" sheet. Wing tip blocks: 2 pcs: 1" SQ x 8 3/4". Stab tip blocks: 2 pcs: 1/2" x 5/8" x 4".

Hardwood:
