The stab has been sheeted on both sides, stab tips have been added. The LE and tips still need to be shaped. Things are moving forward.

Sorry, I forgot the pictures in the last post. I spoke to Dan at Laser Tech today. Based on the emails and PM's he has received it looks like after the Sequel and Sweetater we can expect the Tiporare, Curare, Arrow, UFO, and Compensator. Dan released the beta kit on the Sweetater a year ago and it went together very well. He also has the Atlas ready to go. Dan said he will be doing all of the popular designs for himself and will make them available as he does.

Dan has mentioned the topic of a web site, but I'm not sure what his future plans are. I will ask the next time we talk. My work schedule should be more relaxed this week so I should have time to work on the Mach 1.

I shaped the other Elevator, hinged and shaped the elevator leading edges. Tomorrow the Stab leading edge and tips will be shaped, then a final sanding will wrap it up.

I finished the Stab today. Pictured you can see the centerline marked out on the leading edge and tips , then the final results. I will give everything another light sanding prior to the glassing process. The Rudder and Vertical Fin are next on my list.

I started working on the Rudder & Vertical Fin today. Pictured you can see the parts out on the bench, The LE & TE of the vertical fin sanded to rib profile and the first side sheeted, pinned and weighted down. The Rudder parts were joined. To be continued.

The pictures show the first side of the vertical fin sheeted, the other side sheeted and waiting for the glue to dry, and the fully sheeted fin. Next will be sanding the LE profile, shaping the rudder and hinging the rudder. I made a mistake with the rudder in the last post. The top part should be glued to the vertical fin, not the rudder. I corrected that. More to follow later today.

The vertical fin and rudder are finished now except for final sanding prior to glassing. The LE edge of the vertical fin was shaped, the rudder was shaped and the hinges were installed. More to follow soon.

wonderful job you're doing here.

The size of that rudder, or rather, the size of the fixed rudder portion at the top, caught my eye. I had never realized that the Mach 1 had such a configuration. It's interesting that the Deception has pretty much the opposite configuration with the rudder entirely above the elevators and a fixed lower portion.

BTW, how does that hinge slotting machine work for you? Is it worth the green? It probably makes for fast slotting for CA hinges I'd imagine.

The Vertical Fin and Rudder are per plans. I like the "slot machine" it works well as long as you pay attention to what you are doing. It cuts wood like butter. Tomorrow I will work on the wing.

As an experiment I made some new blocks for the fuse using 4" wide stock versus using the glue and laminate method called out in the original Midwest kit. Using the light 4" stock resulted in a total savings of 6 oz. I scraped the original blocks that I had glue and laminated.

I cut the engine mounts so the Webra Speed .70 would drop in. Maple is tough wood. I set the engine on the beams and placed the 2 1/4" Tru-Turn FAI Spinner and the nose ring in place. The nose ring was tacked on with rubber glue for now. The installation went well.

The part number F7's were glued onto the bottom of the engine mounts. You will notice that the nose gear has been bolted back into the airframe. I made the servo mount for the Hitec Metal Gear Servo, installed the servo into the mount, mounted that assembly into the fuse using 4-40 bolts and blind nuts. I made the linkage and tried it. It worked well. I will be routing the servo wire through the tank compartment. More to follow.

I sanded the balsa F7's down to match the motor mounts so the engine would drop in. I milled a slot so that the nose gear steering servo extension could pass through F2. The throttle linkage was set up using a ball link. No issues with the linkage passing through the tank compartment. The 16 oz tank looks like it will work, so far. More to follow.

Thank you for the compliment. One day I hope to have the skills you do. The Hayes slim line 16 oz tank fits some of the classic pattern planes very well. The top block will be the last issue to deal with for the tank fit.

It's time to work on the wing again. I installed the scrap filler blocks along the LE & TE that will help support the 4 wing hold down bolts. They will get their final shape and sanding when the LE & TE are shaped. More to follow.

The sevo mounts have been installed in the wing. I plan to use Hitec HS-85 BB Micro Servos (x2). They have 49 in/oz at 6V. You can see the servo mounting beams pictured and some 3/32 scrap in place to show some detail. More to follow.

you must have done it before if you're planning on installing HS-85's in a Mach 1 . Of course, they are comparable to muscle servos back in the day but still somehow they'd make me feel like the Mach 1 might only achieve Mach 0.5... Have you considered Hitec's latest digital sports - HS5475? Or even the analog HS-475? You might find this Canadian source great value (with today's exchange rate)!

I try to purchase the Kraft-Hayes wheels when the price is right. A friend of mine is using the Hitec HS 85 BB's in an overpowered "Hots" and they work very well for him.

David,

I do have a good supply of most of the popular Hitec servos, but at this point I plan to stick with the HS 85 BB's. I see you like the Kraft-hayes wheels also. I wish someone would make them again.

I will be working on the Mach1 and SEQUEL this weekend, so stay tuned.

I cut the landing gear struts to fit in the wheel wheel area. This is not the final length, but will work for set up. Over the weekend I will be working on the balsa wheel wells.

I have the Wheel well parts on the bench ready to be joined with thin CA in a Pipette. The parts are joined and shaped around a spray can after they are sprayed with water. More to follow.

The retract wells were set in place so you have an idea of what they will look like. They are too deep at this point. Next posting they will be finished and attached to the retract mounts. The air lines will be run too. More to follow.
