Hello Everyone,

I have not had much time to work on my projects lately, but did have time to cut the axles and mount the Kraft Slim Line Wheels today.

Hi Guys,

I decided to start over with the retract wells. My first ones were too small in diameter. The wheel wells are now installed and have been coated with thinned epoxy to add some strength. After the epoxy cures I will mount the retracts, run the air lines, servo extensions and get ready for the wing sheeting. More to follow.

Nicely done Leo! Those first ones did look like a bit of a tight squeeze.

How do you find those slimline Kraft's handle on landing and take off? I've a few and haven't gotten around to using them opting for the standard treaded ones instead.

Keep up the excellent work!

David,

Thank you. The first ones were way too tight. I have never used Kraft wheels, but I will let you know.

Hi Guys,

I worked on the top of the wing. The leading and trailing edges were shaped to rib profile. The wing lost a lot of weight from that process. I have my scale and sheets of 3/32" balsa ready to weigh the next time I work on the Mach 1. More to follow.

Leo,

apart from the excellent progress and job on your two builds, I have to say that you have one sweet workshop! I especially like the vegetation and light streaming in through the window. Do you have one workbench each per build plus the maintenance table by the window?

If I were only able to empty my garage, I'd stand a chance at a space like that. As it is, I work in 1/3 of it's space...

Onward with builds!

David.

He, he...

Pete, that's why we make use of the laundry room shelving... Actually, the kitchen is not a bad place to hang models - you get to steam your canopies every once in a while.

David,

I have two 4' x 8' tables for building space. I am confined to the basement and have managed to take most of it for hobby space. "I am the King of my Castle as long as she is not home." I have been looking for more space to hide two enclosed shelving units that will be delivered in the near future.

Pete,

I am using 2 1/4" wheels as called out on the plans. I found a PVC Pipe connector (splice) at a big box home center that I used as a form for the wheel wells. The od was just under 2 3/4". I wrapped the od of the pipe connector with plastic wrap and went to work. I slid the balsa wells off of the pipe connector and it worked out fine.

That's one way of ensuring nice circular wells.

I used 1/64" ply on the wells of the foam wing model I'm currently building but I think I'll go back to 1/16" balsa for the next. Make the wells and fit them to the core openings. Any core assymetry around the well can then be taken care of with a little light filler.

Leo, actually you gave me a good idea for wing hold down screw access tubes. I'll roll some 1/16" around a 1/2" copper pipe, harden it and paint the interior prior to gluing them into the belly pan. I kept holding off for some cardboard tubes but this should work just as well.

David.

Hello Everyone,

I started the wing sheeting today. After weighing the sheets I made a template allowing for 1/4" extra margin and used the template to cut the first sheet. It's now glued and weighted to keep it straight. More to follow when the glue dries.

Hi Guys,

The top of the wing is now sheeted. Next time I will have installed the airlines,  servo extensions, trimmed the LE & TE edges down,  then sheet the bottom of the wing.

Hi Guys,

I installed the air lines, the servo extensions with pull lines, planed and sanded the leading and trailing edges to shape. The next step will be to sheet the bottom of the wing. More to follow.

Hi Everyone,

1/2 of the bottom of the wing is now sheeted. I made the retract and Aileron servo cut outs. The other 1/2 of the bottom wing has been sheeted and the glue is drying. After making the retract and Aileron servo cut cut outs it will be on to wing tips, ailerons and shaping the leading edge of the wing. More to follow.

Mmm... those slim Krafts sure look slick! Maybe its time to put mine into action.

Smooth building Leo. Keep it up. I can't bring myself to start another thread although I do enjoy it.

Here's a picture of the original Mach 1. Notice it has the number 2 on it because in actually the #2 Mach 1 which was the plan used for the kit. #1 had more side area. Norm is with the plane. He was an amazing designer, builder and most of all flyer. Enjoy, Mike Mueller

Hi Guys,

I finished sheeting the bottom of the wing. The retracts cut outs and aileron servo cut outs have been made. I attached the wing tip blocks, planed and sanded.  The green color in the one picture is spot putty that I used to fill in some grain. The ailerons that I had made earlier in this thread will not work, so I am going to carve and sand the ailerons to the exact shape needed. You can see that I have attached the inboard and outboard fixed parts of the one aileron. More to follow.

Hi Guys,

You can see my set up in the first picture for shaping the Aileron, inner and outer trailing edge parts. The rest of the pictures go through the process. The final picture shows the Aileron hinged and in place. More to follow.

Hello Everyone,

I finished the second Aileron and have rough shaped the wing tips. The leading edge needs to be shaped and some final sanding then I can glass the wing.

Yup! As smooth as a whistle.

Keep up the excellent work Leo. I like your discipline and steadfasteness. That's the way to get a pattern ship (or two!) done without knowing it.

What's the state of fuses on your builds? - can't recall if any are done yet.

David.

David,

A good portion of the Mach 1 fuse has been completed. I need to add the top and bottom blocks and carve it to shape. I will assemble the Sequel fuse later this week and update that thread. I have to balance my free time between flying and building.

Right, I do remember now - I'm going to reread your entire thread some time when I get to order my kit from Dan. It'll probably be a Sequel (unless he has something even more enticing!) so I look forward to seeing that fuse come together.

David.
