That's a possibility. Why not ask Lee Murray at PC Soar?

I e-mailed Lee Murray. He said that the program adds drag to the mid-tail design. He said that the mid-tail has nearly twice the interference drag as compared to the t-tail. He did not say why it does though. Again, I would assume that it is because it is in the wash of the wing.

BTW, I have met some of the Valley Aero Modelers. Including Lee, Bob Johnson, Fran LeClercq and others. I attended their annual show and auction with my Majestic a few weeks ago. (got 3rd. in the sailplane division) Fran invited me to his home in Green Bay to look over his collection. He has 21 sailplanes hanging on the wall and from the ceiling. Spent over 5 hours discussing the hobby! They all know your friend Karl. I hope you haven't sent karl back yet. the weather has been rotten. Anyway, they all want me to come up to the sod farm to fly. A really great bunch of guys. Just wish they weren't quite so far away. Duey

In a T-tail there are two corners where the sides of the fin meet the bottom of the stab. In a mid tail there are four corners where the top and bottom of the stab meet the sides of the fin. These corners produce interference drag.

The down was behind the wing extends quite some distance above and below the wing. The wake effects of the wing on the stab aren't much different for the two stab locations.

All of this then brings a question to mind. If the t-tail performs so well, then why do they seem to be falling from popularity? Looking down the list of open class ships on the NSP site there isn't a t-tail in the group. My guess is that the durability is the main reason and the contest flier is willing to trade a small bit of drag for durability?????? Of course, It appears as though I can build the mid-tail lighter, which means less weight overall and a better thermalling ship. Perhaps I just answered my own question.
