Status: offline 		I can't believe I'm making a post about spinners, but...

Before I drop $30 to $50 or more on a spinner, what are the major differences between brands? So far I've found Dave Brown, Tru Turn, Great Planes of course, and I just found some called Spin Right and ProSpin - anyone know anything about these? Is there anything I need to know, or just pick what looks good and fits? The Venus came with spinners so I have yet to buy one.

Status: offline 		Not all spinners are created equal, especially for 2M pattern airplanes equipped with high performance 4 cycle 140 - 170 motors. My Tru-Turn aluminum spinner, lightweight backplate, adapter assembly and misc. mounting accessories are very durable and reliable, especially when cranking the engine with an electric starter hundreds of times each year. For me, they're worth the extra money I.M.H.O.

I have to agree with Steve. Get a Tru turn and forget it. The plastic ones look OK, but when you use an electric starter they don't last very long. Carbon ones are great, but they don't work well with Electric Starters. As long as you are flying 2 strokes, it really doesnt matter as a starter isnt really a requirement.

Status: offline 		I've been using CAModels Carbon Fiber spinner for over 200 flights, no issues at all. The spinner is CF with a very lightened up backplate. The CF cone has an epoxy glassy look to it. I've used the YS 170 all the time, and used electric starter every flight. The CF shows zero sign of wear from the spinner. The Rubber cone will leave some rubber on it after a while, which is wiped off easily. If you model is nose heavy, this is an easy fix because it is arouond 0.75 oz lighter than a TT lightened spinner.

Status: offline 		One more question: My plane is requiring a gross amount of nose weight to balance. I know they make weighted spinners, and also weighted prop washers. My thinking was that these would create a greater load for the engine and is not desirable. Is this correct?

I hate adding weight to a plane, but the only options I can think of, other than straight lead, are a weighted spinner and a redundant battery pack.

Status: offline 		Joe I think it's best to stay as light as possible. The added strain on the motor is not good. Plus it could cause more of a gyroscopic effect when your heavy on the shaft. I know with electric as well it's better on the motor to keep things as light as you can. Mike

Status: offline 		The diameter of the spinner is more a function of the area where the backplate meets the cowl on the plane than the engine size.

Does the manufacturer of your plane have a recommended spinner size?

check the front of the cowl on your plane and measure that area. Then buy the spinner that fits properly.

Status: offline 		Thanks, I guess I'll have to figure it out then. I thought a 3.5in looked really great, but then realized it would block a lot of cooling air from the engine.

Most cowl's have the ring build in on the front, or the manufacturer will tell you a recommended size. It should flow nicely with the front of the airplane, without sticking up and such. What airplane is it?
