TK. Nothing like a good story to go along with a great model. I've wanted to built one of these for years but can not ever find one at a reasonable price like yours when I'm ready to build. I've seen these listed at prices that I could imagine anyone giving for some of these Byron kits. Good luck with yours and do post some photos and Mabey even a vid of the maiden.

Here are some photo's of my Ryan YPT-16 I took it to Rhinebeck and test flew it there. She went well,not over powered with a Quadra 35 believe me. Climb out over the aerodrome trees was nerve racking. Second flight went better after tweeking the needles a bit. Plane is very responsive on the controls, also a clean fast flier, no drag as I am used to with my WW-1 models. Comes in quick, but settles on the mains nice and a straight roll out each time. I have not used the flaps yet, next time. All and all it's a classy looking plane, that needs caution on take offs, but when in the air is a good flier. Came out at 21 lbs.
Also the model took first place at the Jamboree which was cool. I do have another kit in box which I will consider selling.

Your Ryan looks very good TKFOKKER. I'm also building the Byron Ryan, but can't decide which scheme to go with. I've always liked the John Gosney scheme that Sig used, but it seems like Ryans were meant to be polished aluminum. What paint did you use for the aluminum on yours?

I used Rustoleum Chrome rubbed down after two weeks of drying time. This paint is very soft and takes time to dry because of the heavy metalic in it. Paint is not fuel proof so you need to always be careful. But it's the only way to get a finish like that unless you go with real aluminum tape. That is the reason for the venturey exstension tube. It keeps the fuel in the carb and not on the plane, plus better power. If I do another one I will go with the Red and cream color scheme, civilian. Too hard to produce a perfect all metal look.

TK. Please tell us a little more about your rub down process. They look real good. As close as you are getting I would do that before Alum tape in most cases. Thanks for posting.

Still have not completely given up on the idea of using the foam wings. What does everyone think about wrapping the leading edge with 1/64th ply and then filling and glassing? Maybe back to the spars?

I dug out a 4 foot by 12 inch piece of 1/64th ply and cut it to the appropriate size to be able to wrap around the leading edge from spar to spar. Left it to soak while we went to Church. When we got home, I wrapped it around the leading edge from spar to spar and held it in place with a couple of big ol' Ace bandages to dry. When it was dry, I took it off the wing, and am in the process of trimming it to fit precisely and to cut the holes for the plugs for the flying wires. I think this may work very well and will make the leading edge ding proof. I'll fill the junction with lightweight spackle and it should slick up nicely for the glass cloth. I'm laminating the wingtips using 1/16th spruce. Might even introduce some dummy ribs to get the correct effect.

Got the leading edges sheeted and the tips laminated. What a chore just to do what Byron should have done in the beginning. I guess it will be okay, but I still think that I'd be better off framing up a new set. We'll see.

Now I have the wings about ready to finish. Just glued on the sub-rib this morning and when dry, I will finish sanding the wing and get it ready to fiberglass. I'll try and get some pictures to post of the job. I think it will be okay. It is stronger and more ding resistant than the pure foam wing was. I'm still going to frame up a set of wings and compare the look. I have a feeling that the framed up wings will win out.

Stickbuilder I have a Byron Pitts special (foam wonder) that I started to do with the foam wings exactly what you have done.

About 2/3’s of the way through I decided to toss them aside and build balsa and spruce wings. I couldn’t be happier with the result; they are lighter and stronger than the originals.

I also have a NIB Byron Ryan that will get the same treatment when I get around to building it.

Yep, the foam wings are crap. I drew up a set of plans for the wings and here is one ready to sheet.

Thanks all. The wings are ready to cover. Here are a few more shots that are larger. I'll be surprised if they don't fly better than the foam versions. I'll think they do at least. Anyone need a wing plan? I have it rolled up.

Paul, yes there will be a template of the rib. I'll send you an email when I get a minute, and will be happy to send you the plan. It is only one panel, and you reverse it to build the other wing. Seems to be very strong. I used 1/8 X 3/4 aluminum from Lowe's for the wing joiner plate. Shown on the plan.
