It's never necessary to upgrade as long as the equipment you have works.
Some people like to upgrade from the RTR controllers to higher end JR or Airtronics controllers. The higher end controllers will give you additional features such as exponential throttle and steering (most useful if you are racing and need precise controls).
I recently upgraded, but for a few practical reasons.. I just got a second car and didn't want to have two controllers so I got one with memory for multiple models. Since I was already in the market for a new controller, I got the JR SX3 because it was synthesized.
