I am a student and I have to design a boat/submarine for our engineering project, the only restrictions is that it has to be 3 inches or more in diameter and cannot use radio frequencies, the total cost cannot exceed 80 dollars. I know little very little about submarine design and I was wondering if someone was able to offer ideas or suggestions on how to build and suggestions for the choice for a motor, voltage, and the material to build the exterior and how to prevent water from entering. The sub only has to travel in a straight path for about 40 feet, speed is an issue the faster it goes the better we are graded.

Thanks

If it can be a boat instead of a submarine, you're better off. It will be much easier if you build a boat, slap a small elec motor, drive shaft to a prob, and a rudder to control direction.

I already turned in my abstract so I have to stay with the submarine idea. Also the boat would have to make a go around a circular fountian while the sub just has t go in a straight line. Any suggestions on how to build the sub?..So far I have thought of a combination of dc motors and pvc piping but not to sure on how to put it together or what voltage to use.

Then a simple DC circuit should work, motor, battery and a switch. My advice would be to buy a length of PVC pipe with watertight screw-on end caps (check your local hardware/plumbing store). As for the motor, you could either build a stuffing box to seal the shaft or run it in the wet. I believe Mr. Nuke Mechanic has built such a WTC, perhaps he'll pay us a visit soon?

Maybe it should resemble more like a torpedo? In that case, making the entire submarine body rotate via tail fins should make it run more true.

Thanks would do you think the fins should be made out of as well as the WTC? Also for speed do you think it would better to use one small propeller in the bank, once that revs high or something like this

and how would one go about making the one in the youtube link?

thanks again

Sounds like you don't need any control, just an on/off switch for the motor? If so, you can probably run the whole thing wet. A 540 motor, a standard 6-cell RC batt pack (sub-C cells), and an on/off switch should do it. It would be more of a torpedo than a sub, really.

PVC pipe 4” diameter 2-3 ft long. A 12 volt sealed lead acid batt, (any waterproof bat or compination at least 12v or better)on/off switch, a cone in the front, a bilge pump in the back, some fins. Trim (put foam around the top half of the PVC pipe) so the sub is slightly buoyant and level. Bilge pump may have to stick out the bottom a little.

No WTC no prop, shaft, or seals. But not sure if 80 will cover that.

A torpedo is all he needs, as was mentioned. 3" pipe, cross fins near the back, motor, battery, on/off switch. Enough weight in it to run it wet, maybe some static 'dive planes' near the nose to keep it at whatever level you want (this would take trial and error test runs). You could look for some model rocketry stuff for a nice nose cone.

As for the speed thing, you can make it as fast as you want really after you have the rest of the torpedo built. Motor/cell count/propeller up until you hit the budget limit. You won't need batteries with lots of capacity, just cheap volts.
