Finally ... a couple of extras I did. Radiator intake and funtional cooling flap that operates with the throttle servo! All in all about $1600 in the air. First flight should come this weekend! Thanks for looking. This ones been alot of fun!! Flyboy 1950

Oh ... I forgot. The anti collision light on the belly flashes! Actually, it's a reciever voltage sensor and uses an led. It flashes as long as the voltage is above 4.8 volts.
I'm using a 2700 Mah 6 volt NIMH main battery and seperate 600 MAH Nicad for the gear.

Lets us know how the struts work out for you. Were they much of a problem using the stock mechanisms? Can you give step by step of that process now that they are in as I would consider doing the same thing.

Yo Rocky! I looked at a lot of options regarding the gear and kind of feel that pressure tanks and pumping before every flight is a pain so I though trying to make the stock mechanism work was worth a try. I had heard all the complaints about the stock gear being too flexible and frankly, as you can see, I'm a scale nut and would not be happy with the look of the stock wire gear. The Robart 662 Offset Struts needed a lot of modification to make them fit the stock wheelwells. I did not want to mess with the nice finished look from Hanger 9. The 662's come 9" long from the factory and needed to be cut down to 6" (plus the wire that extends into the mechanism). Essentially, I had to take the struts apart, remove the piston and spring, shorten the strut to 6". I then discovered that I had to shorten the strut and the spring by 1/2". The struts come with steel inserts that had to be drilled out to fit the factory wires (I think 12mm?) and then the steel inserts are soldered into the tubes with a torch. You can do this without damaging the paint at the top of the strut but afterall, it's a warbird. The gear would not be spic and span on a real mustang. You can repaint. I also opened up a small section of the sheeting of the wing to reinforce the factory gear mounts. I did this for two reasons. 1. I generally feel that ARF's are not built strong enough in that area and reather that ficx the damage later, I beefed it up now. and 2. The original gear mount rails need to be shaved to allow the wheels to sink deeper into the wells for the offset struts. I left the factory rails in place and made 1" hardwood blocks that fit snuggly under each factory rail and epoxied in place. Take a look at Post #214 above and you can see a picture of the wing before I closed it back up. The result was a very strong mount for the gear. (I have 1 1/4 " screws attaching the gear to the wing!). I not only shaved the the side of the rails closest to the wells but I also shaved the front rail so that the gear would be a bit more forward when extended to minimize the nose over effect of the Mustang. I used Hitec HS-75 Retract servos. I used heavy duty servo arms and upgraded the hardware at the servo end to heavy duty with permanent steel
washes to hold them to the servo. I tried eliminating the hardware at the servo end and tried z bends. Forget it. You really need the ability to be able to adjust at the servo end. Adjustment ie critical. There is an adjustment screw on the gear mechanism to limit side to side wobble. Don't try to be too tight or the servo will struggle to release the lock in the down position. So I'm all lubicated and the gear seems to be working fine in the shop. P.S. The gear is on a seperate battery pak isolated from the receiver battery. If the gear gets locked in a partial up-down position, those 110 OZ servos can suck the juice out of a battery a hurry. This insures that I don't lose the model if the gear becomes an issue. That's an impressive piece of engineering you described in getting the Robart 662s to work in the H9 design. But, for those of us who clearly don't have your engineering expertise and would probably mess it up, did you identify an alternative after-market installation in your research with less redesign work necessary?

Yo Clay. It really isn't that difficult! Just follow my steps. I don't know of an alternative
other than some of the air systems mentioned. Hey Capt G! What did you do ... hit the gear switch first , then rotate?? Great picture. I worked too hard on the air scoop to risk that! Are you flying your 1.50 and hows it going? Flyboy 1950

The takeoff photo is done using a technique described in Model Aviation a few months back.......Great photo but you never can get the wingtips in[sm=eek.gif]

I have a Saito 1.80 that is currently in another plane. I haven't decided if I will be putting it in my H-9 mustang yet.

I like an 18x6 on the 1.80, but some prefer the APC 17x6. I am currently using pro-zingers and get 9000 +/- tuned for flying, but the engine is far from broken in yet. When I can get one, I plan on switching to a Mezjlik 18x6, as I have heard that is the prop for the 1.80.

The Prop is the Top Flight large scale one made mostly of wood and ABS. I thought it looked good on this plane. Flying prop is MA Classic 18x10.

Capt G. Your's looks great! Wouln't it be great if someone could come up with a functional, scale prop! I've been dying to do panel lines. How did you do yours?
I saw the article on taking those photos. Congratulations, you fooled me! I will fly first time tomorrow. Could't fugure out the Moki last weekend. Fuel coming out the exhaust, good glow plug and not a sputter. Who would have guessed it needed more fuel? It now starts on the second half-twist. Incredibly smooth running engine with only two gallons of fuel through it!! So ... I'm out of excuses. I normally fly off grass but if decided to fly off pavement the first time. I do that enough to be comfortable with it and feel I'm not fighting the elevator to keep the model from nosing over or ... taking off too soon. That scares me most. Getting it flying before it's ready probably "eats " more warbirds. Hey I still prefer the Hanger 9 over the other two options (World and TopFlight). I'm generally happy with the kit. After much tinkering, adjustment, changing arms, changing hardware, changing rods!! ... the gear seems to be working smoothly. It looks good and only added about $110 to the kit. Hey you guys out there , don't throw away the mechanical gear, I may be interested in some spare hardware! Let me know how you did those panel lines! Flyboy1950

Flyboy - good luck on your flight. I know you'll like the way this one flys. The panel lines couldn't be easier. Get a pack of three "Industrial Ink" sharpie pens from Office Max and a good three view drawing. A ruler with cork backing is good for the straight lines and a flexible one for the curves. You can remove mistakes with CA Debonder, trim solvent or Acetone. The lines do tend to wear off though and I'm toying with the idea of clear coating them maybe. G.

Thanks Capt G. First flights were great. Only a few clicks of aileron and down trim and she was straight. I am still having trouble getting the Moki to start. Once it's running it's super but getting it started is the problem. Check out the thread I started under engines and see if you have anything to offer? Thanks. Flyboy 1950

Hey guys. Although the mechanical gear is driving me nuts, I'm going to stick with it.
I think the 9" bent 440 rod is a good part of the problem. The HS-75's have enough balls to get the gear working. I am probably going to move the servos closer to the action and use an L and very short linkages to eliminate the binding problem. I would be interested in acquiring a few extra sets of the mechanicals. I know a lot of you guys are throwing them away. Instead, e-mail me and lets work something out about getting them to me vs. throwing them in the trash!!

Received my spring loaded struts today from SkyCraft Hobbies in Canada today. I will be trying to install on the supplied mechanical retracts them this evening. They appear to be of good quality and are the same ones pictured earlier in this thread by "limitless". They weigh 4oz including axles instead of the 3oz supplied wires with axles so I con't see an issue here. They cost about $80 USD to your door including shipping and Canadian taxes. I will try to fly tomorrow is time and weather works for me.

I have mine on order, and have a Saito 180 ready to install. However, I am wondering about a gas engine equivalent. Would this be a Zenoah G26? Thoughts? I just think the sound would go well with the plane. Or, is the Saito 200 the way to go?

Also, if the retracts are anywhere as bad as the retracts on my .60 H9 P-61, I'll throw them in the street and drive over them with my truck. Absolute junk.

Ordered the Robart setup today. Spoke to a guy called Gary who knows his stuff over there (630)584-7616.

Need the 551 RS retract unit, 60 straight structs, and the 157 VRX air kit.

Anyone know where I can get some good nose art? How about a 4-bladed prip?[:D]

Saito 180 or the new 200 Inline will be a lot better than the G-26. The little gasser is still a fine engine but nowhere near as powerful as either of the aforementioned 4 strokes, plus it'll stick out both sides of the cowl.

I used Century Jet Retracts, basically a bolt-in installation. Very strong (but a limp noodle is stronger than the retracts in the kit!)

Nose art? Try Denny at Cajun R/C. He has "Gun Fighter" and "Grim Reaper" graphics for the 150 Mustang

Were you able to mount the gear doors on the Century Jet installation so that when they're retracted, the gear doors are flush?

Since I boogered up the gear doors trying to get them to work on the stock gear, I left them off the Century Jet gear. I think they will be flush, or at least a lot better than on the original gear.
