Well, I lost my H9 P51 last weekend due to a servo failure in one aileron :-(

I cant seem to locate a new ARF kit as H9 has discontinued it.

Anyone know where I can get one?

    Thanks,
    Bob

I had a similar problem with my 'Stang early this year- lost the whole radio probably due to a bad power switch. I picked another NIB plane up off of e*** a few months ago. They've been going for $400-$450 but there's not one listed right now.

There's one partially assembled listed in RCU marketplace for $400 but the seller won't ship it as the wings are joined.

I know that there are a lot of local hobby stores that still have them in stock since they didn't sell all that well. A local store here has one that he couldn't get rid of and, and the store manager ended up partially assembling and hanging it from the ceiling of the store to try to gather interest it. If the wings are permanently joined then it could be a problem shipping it to Calif, but if you are interested send me a PM and I will give you the phone number to the shop.

I bet that if you just got a directory and started calling hobby stores that you could find one still in the box pretty quick. And I bet you could probably get a pretty good deal.

    Walt

word on the street is that Hangar 9 is coming out with a P-51 to replace their 150 size
this will be more like a 200 size, something that will match the size of thier new T-Bolt

this is why the old one was discontinued. Also this will feature a whole new color scheme

I had a love/hate relationship with my original H9 150. It looked great, the Saito 200Ti twin that I bought for it sounded awesome, and the plane flew nicely once I got the quirks out of it. It was a real head-turner at local fly-ins and such.

But at the same time it really should have been a little bigger, the gear and rails were terrible, and the 200Ti that H9/Saito marketed heavily for the plane turned out to be marginal in power.

But set up with the right prop, 30% fuel and full-time onboard glow the 200Ti really is a pretty cool engine. And I still own the 5" red spinner, Spring-Air retracts to fit, and all the other assorted hardware needed to put another 150 'Stang together. And now I know all the weaknesses and tricks. So for a little over $400 I figured that it was worth grabbing one of the last remaining planes and giving it another go.

I wouldn't be surprised to see H9 re-release the Mustang, but this time improved and over 80". P-51's will always be a big seller and there is money to be made if H9 can get it right.

Thanks Walt, I will PM you.
Herb PM'ed me and said there is one in a hobby shop in Florida.
Ga is a little closer to me so I will call both and see what kind of deal I can work out with shipping.

I have called every hobby shop in my local area and some in northern Ca. NONE available

I have been successful ordering parts from Hangar 9 for my P51 150 in the last few months. You can even order complete new wing sets and fuselages. Horizon Hobbies lists the new fuse at 176.79 and the wing set (which is out of stock until early October) at 226.39. So before you give up, maybe give that a try. I went through my LHS for the parts that I needed.

I came into this thread this evening because I had another day's flying with this baby today and every time I fly it I just love this plane more. The only thing I have to say is that the retract installation has been the bane of my life!

On advice from others in this forum, I installed Robart pneumatics instead of the standard mechanicals. I'm not sorry I did, but I have learned the hard way that the mountings in the wings are not designed to support the additional weight and structural stress that the Robarts impose on the wing. I started flying my 'Stang in April and have had several flights with her. She flys really well and is a lot more docile than I imagined she would be, but I have yet to come back from the field without one or the other of the retracts being ripped out of the wing.

I have repaired the mounting blocks each time and had no success. The minute I land the plane even hard, or hit a bump or hole in the runway, the gear comes out.

I have now decided to completely rebuild the mountings for the both retract installations. I am going to cut the wing formers to allow a deeper mounting block and I'm going to get some hard thickish hard wood to strengthen the mount.

My son has the .60 size Miss America Mustang which is supposed to have H9's improved retract mechanism, but they're also aweful and we will be replacing them over the Winter with a set of Robarts as well.

I still love this plane! She flies like a dream, and there's something really awesome about that Saito 1.80 roaring in over the field for a low pass.

    Hi all:

My Mustang has repeated clocked over 130mph and is offically the fastest at my field. I did have aileron servo gears stripping (HS635) almost every other flight due to high speed. I now have HS5625s in the ailerons.

Does anybody else have a speed demon mustang?

My setup is DA50R with APC 18x12 prop spinning at 8700rpm static.
It has rebuilt retract rails with 80deg robart with 1/2" struts.

    bgr..

I had Spring-Airs in my original P-51 and broke one of the gear rails the first time at the field. I totally rebuilt it and then broke the other side a few weeks later. So then I rebuilt that side. After that I had absolutely no problems (and yes I fly off grass).

Putting together my new replacement 'Stang is still 3rd on my build list, but the first thing I will do is rip out the factory gear rails and install new ones!

I cut back the balsa on the outboard end and then removed the factory rails with a dremel, saw blade and whatever else it took to get them out! You don't have to unglue or pull the gear well to do this if you work at it. I added a light ply doubler to the ouboard side of the rib on the retract end and a light ply doubler on the face of the rib on the gear end. I built new rails by laminating two pieces of aircraft-grade ply together with epoxy, making them long enough to fit over the outboard doubler. I drilled them out and put blind nuts on the back side so I could use screws to mount the retracts. I fitted the rails and retracts and while I was at it adjusted the rake angle slightly forward from stock. Then epoxied the rails in place, patched the balsa sheeting where the original was cut out, and recovered with matching ultracoat.

Whew, lots of work- but bullet proof once complete!

Red... my plane was not near that fast. But I am not yet fully convinced that I am going to put the 200Ti in my replacement 'Stang. I was thinking that a YS160 would make it go pretty good- it's supposed to be able to spin a 17-12 or 18-10 very nicely and I really like YS engines.

    Walt,

I was going to do a similar thing to what you are suggesting except that:

    a) I was only going to put a light ply double layer on the outboard end. Based on your suggestion, though, I'll definitely put one on the inboard end as well. Might as well get it all done for once and for all.

    b) I was going to use a 1/2 inch thick maple block for the new rail. I'm still in two minds about this after reading your post.

When you say "lots of work," how long did it take you? I was figuring a total of about 5 hours spread across 3 or possibly 4 working sessions/days. Sound right?

I am absolutely sure that Maple would work just fine. But the laminated ply is strong enough for an elephant to stand on, and this is only the sort of job that I only want to do once! In my mind the little bit of extra weight is not even worth considering.

If I remember correctly the stock rails are really not very thick. When I cut the ply for the rails only the top "layer" actually went into the rib grooves and the bottom fit between the rails.

I think 5 hours is overly optimistic. For me, if I had to take a guess-

3 hours to remove all four existing rails and clean everything up for the new ones.
4-6 hours to "build" the new rails and doublers, drill them out for the gear, and fit everything up so that the gear rake, angle, and fit in the wells is exactly right.
1 hour wasting time "watching the epoxy cure"
4 hours to permanently install the gear, fit new sheeting patches and fix the covering.

So maybe 12-15 hours total depending on how fast (and careful) you are.

    Walt

    Thanks, Walt.

Reason I am asking is I need to send the retracts into Robart because the cylinders are leaking and I was trying to decide if I should do that before or after I did the work on the wing.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyone heard if Hangar 9 has any plans to revise and reissue the P-51 with similar improvements to the new P-47 they are launching later this year or is the Mustang gone for good?
