I think the 220 will be a great engine for this plane (the old or the new version), It should scream with the 220

Walt, if I remember correctly cause it been a couple months since I have flown her I had the 180 running around 8500 rpm and I had it rich because it is still breaking in. I have been told that the 180 had more power than the 200TI (I don't know that for sure).

Fossil the 8700 RPM was with the 200Ti well-broken in, peaked for power and running on 30% heli with onboard glow full "on". I expect the 180 would do a bit better than this under the same conditions.

By the way I really like the 200Ti and I am flying it in my Decathalon now. It is incredibly smooth and reliable, and it sounds cool. But the difference in power between the twin Saito and the big YS is huge. I sometimes fly my current Mustang with the bigger warbirds running DA50's and the like and have no problem keeping up with them in the pattern.

Bo, I think that the 220 should be in a similar power class to my YS. If so you will like it!

I only run 15% nitro and it is only on its 5th or 6th tank of fuel and still running very rich.

    Walt,

Glad to hear that the 220 should have plenty of power. I'm counting on it! Think I'm going to like the sound of it, also...

Which reminds me: I stumbled over a good "Saito 220" forum thread (not necessarily this website) a couple of months ago and for some reason, can't find it again (forgot to subscribe). Lots of good info on props (brand, diameter and pitch) vs nitro mixture vs max RPM. Anyone have that url?

While I'm not looking to fly noticably higher than max scale speed with this bird, it'd be nice to easily hit 85 to 90 mph on a pass down the runway without having to rely on a steep entry dive to pull it off!

    Bo

The f/s P-51 was good for 440 mph in level flight, that scales to around 80 mph for our birds. A 10 pitch prop spinning at 8500 RPM will generate a theoretical speed of 80 mph but actual ground speed of the airplane will be lower due to airframe drag, making the model actually "slower" than the f/s Mustang. Of course putting the plane in a shallow dive under power will build some serious speed, but I'm sure it did the same for the f/s P-51.

For a Mustang, flying fast IS scale!

I think there is a thread on the 220 in the tach readings forum but most of the guys posting were propping for sport/3D applications so you may be breaking new ground. I'd start with an APC 17-10, but you may find that the engine can spin a 17x12 or 18x10 especially once broken in.

    Walt

Specs for the engine relate a 19x8 bench test motor turning 8100 rpm, and a range from 17x12 to 20x8.

Lets bring this thread back to the top folks! There has been so much great advice and discussion over this bird, and although this thread is long, it is very informative. I'm just getting ailerons and flaps on mine now, and am using tips, hints and advice I've seen here to plan the rest of the build. I'm no genius so I'm having to rely on you out there who are. I'm still tossing around the Saito 220 because I want one but since I'm new to gas (a Pitts 1/3 w/Fuji BT50 EI) I don't know much about what will work best. H9 recommends an Evolution 26GT but is it the best fitting/performing/all around gasser for this bird? I doubt it, but like I said, know little.

I read earlier post about ganging both elevators on one servo. Hows it lasting? If you did, how strong of a servo? Unfortunately, I'm stuck with a 7 channel system for now, and am trying to figure out the best setup for this.

    Hello again

Just wanted to check in on this thread again ..been flying my P51 since last fall and just put flight 100 on it today, and 101! , and it's still flying great! A few small mishaps along the way since I'm getting back into flying after a 25 year hiatus, but all is well with the bird and engine. Now I'm completing a Ziroli P51 for this summer Still using my 2nd prop, a 17x8, on a Saito 180. What do you guys recommend for a prop to get this bird flying faster?

i was test flying my hanger 9 150 mustang it was a hand full the plane has the evolution 26t2 gas engine robert landing gears and scale pilot the plane weights 15.5 pounds
i had to fight the plane to stay in the air went around to make approch to land then the fight was on decreasing power to land i thought the plane was going to fall out of the sky
check the rpm 18 7 the prop is 18.6 has any one had any trouble like this i called horzion hobbies about this they told me the plane was set up right if the egine quits i can kiss
this war bird by it will not dead stick to land you have to fly it to the ground

IMHO The 26GT2 is probably not enough engine for a 15 1/2lb plane.

    Pat,
Glad I found this thread. Been reading through it and lots of good advice. I just bought my H9 1.50 P-51 from an ebay listing and can't wait to get it here. She has a Saito 200 w/ an APC 18 x 10 and Robart air retracts. Plane looks really nice. Been thinking about a Kelo scale exhaust and retractable tail wheel assembly and some type of 4 blade prop setup for it if available for this winters upgrades for it. Nice to see that this thread is still going for this version of the H9 1.5 P-51.

Almost done with my second Frankie and thanks for all the information you guys have posted. My second build has gone even smoother then the first one and I believe it is due to all the good posts on this thread. Hopefully I will maiden her this Sunday if the weather is good.
