I have the P-47 and a P-51 on the way. I will see what the difference is between the two when it gets here.
Shindin machine makes drop in replacement struts for the P-47 retracts. I have a set of these. I think I will eventually get air retracts for both of these birds after a while. I just want to get in the air right now.

BB, Cant wait to find out if the P-47 and P-51 have the same retracts for sure. Do you have the model number of the Shindin retracts that you have?

Sorry I mean't to leave the URL for Shidin. http://www.shindinmachine.com/Miscstuff.html

I looked up the H-9 retracts and they seem to be different.
    The P-47 ones are $79.99 http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN2715
    The P-51 ones are $63.99 http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN4061
That makes me think they are indeed different.

They are definately different. One of mine for the P-51 broke (bad landing, my fault) and Horizon replaced them both free of charge. Problem was they sent me the 47 retracts instead, which are longer and don't fit into the wells. You'll notice this only after you install them and the gear won't close.

Lenny from Shindin just emailed me back and said he could make a set for the P-51 pretty quick. In fact he said it could be done in about a week. He said they could be made to what ever length needed.

well I must say, on the picture these look much better than the previous version. I think I leave it for now as we have a concrete runway on our field with a bit of gravel.

I also ordered the Bolly 15.5 x 12.5 4-blade Which I think will look awsome. To be sure I also ordered an APC 2 blade so I will no get stucked in bad performances.

Man I am looking forward to get everything down here and start assy!

I got a reply back from Kelvin on the exhaust, 215USD plus a long leadtime for the Saito 220 one... Think he is mistaken asI read on his page 90 USD plus stock. Well we will see but 215$ is too much. My feeling says he is too busy and not eager for any special work but this one should be of the shelve and if he is smart he orders them from asia. (actually I can offer him to get it done here in India so I can check quality)

I got my P-51 today. Yes the only difference in the retracts is the P-47 struts are longer.
The P-51 strut sits atop the P-47 strut.

I included a shot of the Shindin strut installed on the P-47 retract.

BB, Thanks for posting the information and the pictures. I hope someone here will post their experiences with assing pneumatic retracts to the H9 150 size P-51. I have looked at several sites, but have not found any retracts billed as a drop in for this plane. Anyone with experience in converting this plane to air retracts please post your experience.
    Thanks, Denny

    Hi

I used the Robart 630 series

    http://www.robart.com/retracts/12-24lb630.aspx

and they fit with small amount of modification...had to cut out for the elbow in the well, and then refilled with fiberglass and painted. I also beefed up the underside of the rails with heavier hardwood, and then ran a heavier strip along the both side ribs too...seems to hold up really well. The struct covers do not sit 100% flush though unless cut out the whole well bottom and re- fiberglass...but for me and this bird if they stick out a bit it does not matter.

I've had some issues with the Robarts, not sure why, but they seemed to be working well now after I switched to metal Tee's instead of plastic??? ,.... over 200 flights now.....

There might be some install picutres earlier in this thread that I posted around Sept/Oct 06.

    best of luck
    M

    Hi Denny,

I haven't researched what pneumatics will "drop into" Frankie, as I intend to keep the factory gear for a while longer. But, you might check out the 600 (as per "Hello" or 700 Series from Robart, and also Sierra and Century Jet have giant scale pneumatics for a P-51, I believe. Some re-work of the gear rails may be required with any of these, of course.

You may also find it helpful to post this, and other Frankie questions, on the "New H9 1.50 P-51" (Version 2 "Frankie" build thread at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5120982/tm.htm.

I believe most of the Frankie owners hang out there, and many of them may not subscribe to this original version "Big Marie" build thread.

    Cheers!

    Rip

Thanks again for the word .doc!

I am also looking onto pneumatic retracts, just as a fancy gadget. I will follow the developments here!

I read in your document you discripe reinforcing the retract rail and the wing dowels. Can you explain that a little more with some pictures? I am gathering material for the moment and want to be ready when the bird arrices but i do not catch the clue 100% with these improvements.

    Thanks
    JP

    Hey JP,

Glad you found my summary doc on the old H9 giant P-51 build thread helpful!

As I've posted before (but, over on the "Frankie" thread), I did fiberglass reinforce the firewall, the wing bolt plate and the gear rails in the wings. I use a medium weight (forget which) fiberglass cloth and 30-minute epoxy for these upgrades.

I don't have any pics of the reinforcing I did on the gear rails, but it would be very similar to what is show in the attached pic of the wing bolt plate. With the gear rails, there are some obvious intersection points between the rails and the ribs and the leading edge of the wing. I cut a number of small (~1/2" x 1" pieces of fiberglass and expoxied them across these joints.

BTW, the two black bolt heads you see in the wing bolt plate are for attaching my dual-battery tray, the end of which you can just see just under the wing bolt block. The batteries "hang" on that tray, sticking rearward just inside the fuselage part of the cooling radiator (left side of pic). This allowed me to balance the Saito 220 without adding dead weight to the airplane.
