MANFRED -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/10/2003 6:41:31 PM)

Why didn't the rocket scientist at H9 do this ship in a different scheme? You'd think with all the possible, and better looking variations available they would have come up with something more interesting then a blowup of the 60 size. Say blue nosed slender tender and tall, or Gunfighter II, or even Big Beautiful Doll, how about Old Crow? Why not release a plain factory issue all aluminum color version for those of us who prefer to customize? I'd be more tempted to shell out the bucks if I didn't already have the sixty size in the same scheme.

Yeah, I kind of agree... I have the 60 and it's not as special having the 150 in the same scheme.

But on the up side, I already have the right color ultracote for repairs :D

Any of you guys think. a G-26 or a G-38 would fit in this plane [/QUOTE]

With the top half of the engine compartment built as part of the fuse, I doubt it. The Moki backplates require hacking to fit it there- a gasser probably wouldn't even be close (sadly, I don't have one to test fit :( )

What 5 inch Spinner's are you guy's using.... the Tru Turn or the far less expensive Dave Brown? Is there any difference in quality?

PigMan Buggerus -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/10/2003 10:55:44 PM)

I am kinda curious about the Dave Brown vs. True Turn quality as well. DB is in my back yard, so I can just run over and buy one from the factory. He does custom cutting to fit your prop as well. Also, has anyone put the Saito 200 inline twin in this bird yet? I think that would be the way I would build it if money weren't an option.

Capt G -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/11/2003 4:42:40 AM)

Used a lot of Dave Brown P-51 spinners (just look at my gallery). Never had any problems and they look good!

Countryboy -> Spinner Options (7/11/2003 11:31:11 AM)

Less we not forget that Zinger also offers a 5" P-51 style spinner. Price is good too... esp. in my case.

Thanks Billy... aka "ACE"

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/11/2003 10:01:55 PM)

Yeah, but you gotta cut those Zingers... then balance.

Wing glued together and drying. Time out!

True, but look at it like this. When you are gutting the plane after it augers in "And It Will Eventually" which do you want to be tossing in the trash bin.... a thirty buck spinner "or" a one hundred & thirty buck spinner.

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/14/2003 11:28:21 PM)

Well, flew mine yesterday. Only one flight due to engine tuning and weather, but it was a nice one.

Mine came in at 16 lbs.- I have twin 5-cell packs and a Moki 1.8, but I didn't expect to be this heavy. Alas, the plane still flew exceptionally slow compared to what I expected. Even without flaps, I was able to gently land on a wet grass field without nosing over. Due to limited flying time, I didn't get the chance to use flaps yet, but that's just an added bonus- they truly aren't needed, even as heavy as mine.

I also didn't open the 1.8 up and ran it rich, but the 'tang still scooted around the sky quickly... with the gear down (I never cycle gear on first flight). I did a very large loop at 2/3 throttle, and she pulled skyward with ease. I can't wait to turn it loose next weekend!

About control throws: With recommended throws, I felt comfortable on first flight with all high rates, though elevator was a little touchy- low rates might be preferred by some here. Since high-rate elevator may be desired on roll out to avoid nose over on really wet/tall grass , maybe high rate with exponential is another option.

My c.g. was just a hair aft of recommended location dry. With about a half tank, she flew a bit nose heavy, so no concerns here either.

With this set-up, there is not a strong nose-over tendency on the ground at all. Even on my wet field, I was able to take-off and land comfortably, letting the tail come of the ground before flying the tail before take-off.

P.S. I cut those gun blisters out of the preformed pieces, sanded them a bit, stuck some brass tube through them, and glued them on individually. Pics later...

I'd rather toss a $60 Dave Brown spinner than a $30 spinner that I spent 2-3 hours machining/balancing, but that's just my preference. Plus, the chances of killing a spinner on a crash aren't very high. Lastly, I don't plan on crashing :D

Hey G, what is that twin pusher behind the Zagi in your pic?

Capt G -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/15/2003 1:49:30 AM)

George - Congrats on your first flight! I am interested to see how those guns came out. Twin is an old Multiplex Twinjet with stock 480s. It scoots on 10 cells. G.

George - that came out great. I'll probably try the same. G.

On her feet for first time today!

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/19/2003 4:54:35 AM)

Nice.

Don't forget the antenna. It's not in the manual, and I nearly did!

- George

P.S. I put my fuel dot and air fill on the "i"s in "Marie" and put the switches on the swastikas.

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/20/2003 5:13:24 AM)

What's the recommendation for pneumatic retracts and struts on this baby?

I'm a bit unsatisfied with the way mine are set up, and I'm ready to upgrade.

- George

Capt G -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/21/2003 1:20:46 AM)

George - I leave off the antennas - they are always breaking off. Don't know about changing the gear. Will see how they hold up. The original gear in my .60 size H-9 are still doing fine. Tried your idea on the guns except used CF tube instead of brass. G.

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (7/21/2003 4:36:57 AM)

Yeah, I wasn't clear enough on the gear. I had installed some air cylinders that I had lying around to drive the stock gear- they don't have enough umph. Also, it's a constant battle to keep the stock gear plumb so that they don't get hung up in the wheel well.

- George

Kyle2Baseball -> retracts (7/22/2003 7:51:31 AM)

mulligan,

Robart 622's with struts are a great replacement for the stock retracts.
Check with your local hobby shop, they will have them in Friday.
See Ya!!!

Kyle2Baseball,

You need to change your user name too "Magician" ..... because if you can make the 622 Robart retract work in the Hanger 9 150 Mustang, you have pulled off one amazing feat

Check out the side by side view of the 622 next to a CJM Centurion retract, which is very close to the mechanical retract supplied in the kit. the Centurion could be most definitely made to work.... with a little trimming on the mounting rails and the retract mounting frame Also the Robart 531 85 degree could be made to work.
