airspeed917,

The stabs are fully sheeted on the 150. They appear to be very rigid & up to the task.

Mulligan,

I understand your philosophy in what you are trying to accomplish, but what do you propose to do with the retract mounting rails. Are you planning to modify these in any way?
How are you going to cock the retract, without the outboard part of the retract frame extending past the lower surface of the wing....without modifying the rails?
Notice in the attached pic,,, if you were to lower the wheel deeper in the wheel well, the outer edge of the retract frame is going to raise proportionally. The five degree tilt angle you propose, will extend the outboard edge of the retract frame about .175 below the skin. How do you plan to compensate for this?

When you say that a offset yolk can not be used without cutting a slot in the wheel liner, are you referring to the bottom of the liner, or where the side wall and the strut cutout meet?
Yes, the retract rails will need to be excavated with a dremel to be at 5 deg. relative to the wing bottom. I will also add some hardwood under the existing rails to beef it up a bit to compensate for the lost material. The outboard edge of the retract will not protrude below the bottom of the wing. Rather, the inboard portion of the retract will be submerged into the wing.

The slot for the offset yolk will be on the "bottom" of the liner, and it will extend from the outboard side of the liner to the middle of the round wheel section.

Again, if you look at my drawing in post #111, you can see how the retract is rotated and how the strut penetrates the existing liner geometry. I didn't mention it, but obviously I will have to make a cut-out for the spring hinge of the oleo as well.

Stagwing -> Engine selection (8/8/2003 6:41:03 PM)

After careful consideration, much research and sleepless nights, I have decided to use the RCS F 180 (front induction) engine. The engine weighs 3.5 Lbs., pumps out 4 HP, with a 20 x 8 MenzS at 6800 RPM it is reported to yield 21.57 Lbs static thrust. Should haul the mail....Much thanks to Mike Dooley/RCS for helping me decide which engine to use on the new Hangar 9 P51 big bird.

As a result of this descision I have two Zenoah engines for sale, no trades.

G-62 new, un-used with throttle kit....$420 plus shipping in the USA

G-23 ran 3 times, not strong enough, has AT6 spinner, throttle kit installed, almost new condition....$240 plus shipping in the USA

I also just picked one up and plan on using a Saito 180. Any recommendations on a good 4-blade prop choice and 5" spinner to fit?

I agree that the livery on this machine leaves much to be desired and that there are many more beautiful schemes out there from actual combat aircraft. I would add Gen. (then Capt.) Chuck Yeager's Glamorous Glenn III to the list.

Has anyone found a good place to purchase decals the right size, so that we can at least partially customize the scheme? With apologies to Freddie Ohr and "Marie," between the 2 H9 P-51 kits, there are too many out there!

LBECKWITH -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/2/2003 1:41:12 AM)

talked to some guys at the Dayton show from Horizon. Got the impression they are working with their manufacturer to improve the retracts on the 1.50 size P-51. Any one else hear anything about this. I hate to shell out big $$$ for air retracts if they will have a fix down the road.

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/2/2003 2:48:41 AM)

Improvements would be a waste of time... unless the "improvement" is to go to some robust pneumatic retracts. I hate to say it, but you might as well assume the cost of the plane to be $250 more for some real reatracts. The silver lining is that the mechanical retracts that you pull out of the plane might be useful for something smaller or not as attractive.

rckymtn1 -> saito 180 (9/2/2003 9:10:28 AM)

would the saito 180 be completely enclosed inside the cowl of the Hangar 9 p51 1.50?, or would the heads, etc be shown?

thanks..

jmiracle -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/2/2003 10:50:54 PM)

I'm seriously considering one of these birds, but I want to put a gas engine in it as opposed to the saito.
Can anyone give me a measurment from the firewall to the nose ring? A measurement across the nose of usable space inside the cowl would be nice too.
Thanks!!

mulligan -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/3/2003 2:59:46 AM)

Saito 180 heads protrude through the cowl about 1/4".

Length of cowl (firewall to front of cowl): 6 1/4"

General dimensions of firewall: 5 3/4" x 8 1/4"

Approximate maximum height of engine head to remain within cowl: 4 1/4" above centerline

Usable space within cowl at nose: about 4 3/4" diameter just inside cowl with an additional 1" of air scoop space about 1/2" back.

Ken Bridges -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/5/2003 3:33:36 AM)

Hey Guys, I just finished H9 150 p51 last week. I have 10 flights on it. I had to change the retracts to pneumatic spring air with robostruts. This combination is just great.
The engine I used is a BME 50cc. I am using a three blade prop from zinger with a 5 inch spinner also from zinger.
This plane is awesome. I love it. Flys like a real warbird.
Check my gallery. Will try to post some pictures.

clayfoushee -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/5/2003 7:37:28 AM)

That's great Ken. Haven't gotten around to starting mine, but what type of retracts did you use. Based upon what I've heard here, I'm definitely not going to use the factory supplied retracts. Everyone on this forum disses them.

LBECKWITH -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/5/2003 8:32:22 AM)

Ken: I like your retracts. Can you tell us exactly what part numbers from the manufacturer you used and what kind of changes were involved in getting the retracts to fit? I have never used air retracts before and I would like to know as much as you can tell us including the rough cost for these.

pettit -> vinyl grqaphics for H9 P-51 (9/5/2003 5:36:53 PM)

Check Cajun R/C Graphics

www.cajunrc.com

for "Gun Fighter" and "Grim Reaper" graphics. To do them right, you'll have to take off the yellow on the tail and wings, but my "Reaper" looks pretty good, and a little different than all the others.

I'm using Century Jet retracts and a Saito 200 Twin. Weight is just over 16 pounds, a little pudgy, but should be OK.

Test flights will be this afternoon

Ken Bridges -> Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/6/2003 11:48:14 PM)

I used the spring air retracts #704 85 degee $155 (a pair) and the oleo robostruts 440 series #660 $49 (each). To joint these two requires a short piece of 3/16 wire strut that I use from the wire landing gear provided. I soldered them together instead of using several set screws, to make it one solid piece. Works very well.
I called Bill from Spring Air and he told me he is now putting together a complete landing gear for the H9 p51 150.
The beauty of the spring air retracts is they assume the landing position if you lose air compression. This happens a lot. This adds comfort when flying. The landing gear always drops down.
I have some pictures in my gallery. Check them out.

Flew my Saito 200 TI powered 16 pound P-51 Friday. Nothing short of spectacular!

Century Jet retracts were flawless and engine sounded unique.

Here's a photo...

Capt G -> RE: Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/8/2003 9:32:00 PM)

Dick - Had first flight on Sun. Stock retracts were solid and worked perfectly. Power is Moki 1.80 and is quite fast. I envy your Saito 200. Looking fwd to the review. G.

Countryboy -> RE: Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/9/2003 1:26:59 AM)

Attached is a pic showing a disected view of the gear rail installation from the factory. I have already extracted the rails, but if you notice, outside of the small piece of tri-stock on the inboard rib, there is not much holding it. The outboard rib is fully slotted to accept the rails, and is tri-stocked inside and out.

I think it would be wise to glass re-inforce the rails to the inboard rib as an added maintenance measure. May save you some grief down the road.

Capt G -> RE: Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/9/2003 1:55:57 AM)

Thanks for the info ( the pic did not make it). I may have to do that down the road.

Countryboy -> RE: Zenoah installation (9/9/2003 2:11:50 AM)

Having problem getting pics into post. I click on the Upload Images and a small window comes up with the option to Browse. I find the pic I want to attach and open it and then click OK, but nothing happens from there.

What's up???

Never mind, I found you can't upload pics when running behind a firewall.

pettit -> RE: Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/9/2003 12:56:23 PM)

Nice landing photo, but next time tell the guy holding the right wing to keep his shadow out of the field of view of the camera.

Thanks for the tip on the gear mounts. I'll take a look at mine, but so far, with 2 rather bouncy landings on grass, they're still solid.

mulligan -> RE: Hangar 9 150 Size P-51 (9/9/2003 8:54:59 PM)

Yeah, G, gotta say you blew it on that MA copy photo-op [:D], but that fly-by mountain shot is AWESOME!!! The guns look good, too [;)].

My 1.80 is still breaking in (gets a little faster each weekend). I'm using a 18x10. What are you using and is your Moki already broken-in? Are you happy with speed? I'm estimating about 65 right now based on flying alongside traffic (don't ask).

Finally, I gotta say that I'm much happier with the Robarts than the stock gear, but I think Countryboy is right- I'm gonna go back into the retract wells and do some glass reinforcing.
