Moki is fairly new but has good power with MA 18x10 Classic. Gear seems strong so far. Sorry about the shadow. G

    Capt. G,

I thought the picture was fabulous....geez why do people in a hobby that supposed to be purely fun tend to be so hyper-critical, even if they think they're just kidding? So what if there was a shadow? It perhaps makes one less likely to share doesn't it?

I would be very curious as to your experience (or anyone else) with the stock gear. It's going to be awhile before I get around to building mine. If the stock gear proves to be reliable, I'd rather just stick with them, as I already have the servos. I asked the question some time back on this forum as to what exactly was wrong with the stock gear and never got an answer.

I'm still fairly new to this hobby and welcome any and all constructive advice.

    Clay

Clay... I only found one thing with the gear. When they were in the down position the had a little play which gave a little wobble. I put a small 1/16th ply shim which tightened up things nicely. So far - so good.

    Hey guys,

I finally got my box out of the rafters and had a few quick questions. Has anyone glassed the win joint on this ARF or found it 'necessary' to do so on similar sized mustangs? I was also contemplating putting a gasser in this bird. It would be my first gas engine experience in RC and needed some input on what you think the airframe would handle. Someone, I read, put a BME 50 in theirs. Is a 50cc gasser going to tear this plane apart? The reason I am asking is, based on dimensions, the DA 50 looks like it would wedge on in there with some opening of the cowl. I have heard great things about the DA products and thought this might be an opportunity to give it a shot.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Thanks G....that gives me an idea of what to look for. The wobble and shim solution gives me an idea of what to look for. Please keep me posted as to your experience with them.

The pictures are great stuff. Flew mine today and made two very good, slow landings using flaps. I was surprised that the landing gear wires bent at the very top next to the wing. One bent forward and the other bend towards the rear. I straightened them and the second landing produced the same results. These gear are poorly designed. I hate to spend hundreds more to have a plane that doesn't need repair after every flight.

I had one other concern as far as putting a gasser in this bird....prop size. If I went the DA 50 route, I would end up swinging a 20-22 inch prop. Is there enough clearance to swing that kind of meat?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Great picture.

Has anyone done a test flight with a gasser? I wonder if the airframe will hold up after 50 or more flight.

    Capt. G,

I noticed the picture indicates that you fly off of pavement, have you tried flying off of grass with the retracts? Also, what retract servos did you use and where specifically did you insert the 1/16 shim?

Sorry for the inquisition, but I'm on the fence as to whether to attempt the stock retracts.

Oriole, I flew the original retracts before plugging in Robarts. Obviously, I didn't like the mechanicals too much, but they will not cause any harm- they simply wobble a bit (helped by adding the shim). If you're on the fence, I suggest just trying the stock gear. You lose nothing by trying them out, except perhaps a couple of retract servos if you don't already have some. Don't mount the doors, though, until you make your final decision.

Thanks Mulligan, that helps. Where is the shim inserted?

The shim, which will be pretty thin (~1/32" ) , is placed on the outboard portion of the strut mount. When the gear is retracted, this is the only portion of the rotating gear mount that is exposed. You place the shim such that it fills the gap between the mount and the retract housing when the gear is deployed.

You must custom size the shim so it creates a nice tight fit that eliminates slop yet does not prevent the gear from locking in the down position- VERY IMPORTANT!!

Hi Guys! My compromise on the gear issue is to stick with the stock mechanical gear mechanisms and add Robostruts. I would eliminate the 360 degree bend perhaps use a section from the stock gear. The stock gear is 90 degrees so I think I can use 660 offsets. I haven't done this yet. Has anybody tried a similar setup? I'll use Hitec HS-75BB retract servos. Also the subject of painting the spinner came up. I'm using a Dave Brown spinner. I really think this model needs a red spinner so I painted mine with Rustoleum Professional"Safety Red #7564". I sanded and primed and gave the spinner three coats. I discovered the red was a hair on the dark side so the middle coat was white and the final red coat applied over the white. matches perfectly. I am worried about scrathing it on the typical P-51 nose overs! I'm doing the Moki 1.8 with JTEC muffler in mine. Top Flight scale interior and Elite Force WWII pilot! I'm planning two drop tanks and possibly two 500 pound bombs. I'm really excited about this airplane! Flyboy1950

    flyboy,

The stock gear is 85 deg. With your idea, you will need to use Robart #660 straight strut (not offsets) in order to keep wheel and strut in the wing.
