Hi Guys. A lot of talk about landing gear in the H9 1.50 Mustang. As I mentioned in a previous thread, my idea was to stick with the stock mechanical retracts and add Robart 662 offset Robostruts. I completed the install of one wing last night and I am very pleased with the results! I was able to use the original wheel wheels and only had to modify the HP gear attachment points and cut out for the scissors bracket on the struts. Essentially, I cut off the stock strut wire and attached the robostrut. There was quite a bit of modification to the Robostrut to get it to fit. The Strut comes at 9" and needs to be cut down to 6" to fit the Mustangs original gear wells. I took the strut apart, Cut it to six inches, soldered in the steel sleeve which need to be drilled out to fit the stock strut wire (where the HP strut fits into). I also had the cut the piston and spring by 1/2 inch to get it all to fit and the spring to operate correctly. I opened up the wing at the gear attachment points and shaped a piece of 1" hardwood and slid it under the HP factory gear rails, front and back and epoxied them in. Instead of removing the factory gear rails, I supported them from undeneath and at the same time gave myself a solid base to screw the gear into. I then shaved the factory rails to allow the wheel to not only seat deeper (until the strut hits the bottom of the wheel well. I did not have to remove or cut the wheel well at all! I also shaved the front rail a bit more than the rear to allow the gear to cant forward a bit to try to eliminate the Mustangs tendency to nose over (I fly off of grass). I also purchased the Robart Gear door mounting brackets (they slide over the Robostrut) and reversed them from the normal way they are used and attached the H9 gear doors to it (drilled and tapped). With a Hitec HS-75BB retract servo, the gear opens and closes slowly. I was able to use 1 1/4 inch stainless screws to attach the gear to the wing and the result is a fairly stiff gear. The gear does not close as tight as the factory gear would have. The doors are touching the wing but not as tight as the original would have. I am okay with this. I probably could have cut into the wheel wells and got a tighter fit on the gear doors if I wanted. I still won't be flying for a few weeks cause I'm adding a lot of scale detail. I'll tell you about this in another thread. I'm working on pictures if anyone is interested. Flyboy 1950

I'm having a problem with the springair oleo with the 704 retracts. The axles supplied are too short to mount the stock 3 1/2 " h-9 wheels, any suggestions on a more narrow wheel in this size?

I used the springair 704 retracts with the robostruts 440 oleos without any problems. You might want to call spring air to see if they have comparable oleos. This combination is a perfect fit for H9 P51 1.50.

Thanks for the info. Too bad I already bought the spring air oleos. Had to cut the wheel well to fit. Overall, the oleos were not very good...axles are too short, poor fit of the bushings and axle and a welded piece that holds the spring open broke off. The retracts, however, worked fine.

You should call Bill at Spring Air and see what he can do for you. He now has the correct oleos for the 1.50 size H9 P-51. 1 321 728-9002

I am starting my 1.50 Mustang today. I have a NIB ST 2300 I plan to use for power. Just not real sure about running it inverted. This engine when tuned properly is a real power house for its size. I had considered the Moki 1.8,but this plane is an ARF and not too sure about the durability under the stresses of that big 2 stroke.
I plan to use the existing retracts. I have found the adjusting screw to remove all the wobble. The hardware is history. After reading this whole list of postings, I feel that you all have contributed a lot of "Tribal Knowledge". That is knowledge through experience. It made me a little more comfortable about this plane after reading the Great Flight reviews.
Does anyone have experience painting the Dave Brown aluminum spinners? I would like to paint mine Red.
I am a Mustang Junkie, I have 5 Mustangs in my basement now and all ready to fly, except this one. Just sold my Byron to a guy in Iowa; now he calls me to tell me how well it flys.

    R/C Junkie,

Check out the attached thread from Limitlss. He painted his spinner red, with Pactra Formula U.

Ho R/CJunkie! Check my earlier thread in this forum on 9/11 page 6. I painted the Dave Brown Spinner with Rustoleum. Info and paint color/number is there. Flyboy1950

I have finished my gear door mounting technique and will post results tomorrow after I have a chance to fly the plane.

I used a 5/8" strut for my mustang as opposed to the stock strut. I had to find a way to mount the gear doors without binding the strut in the narrow channel provided for the stock struts.

I made four straps to wrap around the strut to attach the doors. I used the thinnist sheet metal that would hold it's shape and two 4/40 bolts/nuts on each strap. The width of the strap is 1/2". The top strap is located at the black stripe and the bottom strap is located at the end if the strut.

I have attached some picture. If anyone can find a better way to mount these doors, I'd love to see it. In the meantime, I will try this out and see how I fair.

    Cheers!

    Limitlss,

That looks really nice....great job! Am I to understand you used the stock gear hardware with a bigger strut? Please let us know how it performs. I've been procrastinating in starting mine because I was really undecided about what to do regarding the gear. If it works well after a couple of landings, I'd love to have your parts list.

    Thanks again, Clay

    Actually, no!

I had been using the supplied retract but was not happy with their performance or durability. I have since installed Spring Air #704 retracts and absolutely love them.

All in all this plane has been a blast to assemble and fly. Some minor deficiencies to get over and she is fantastic. I can't wait for the 1.50 size Corsair to come out.

    Cheers!

Hey Guys. I previously mentioned that my approach to the gear is to use the original mechanical mechanisms with Robostruts. I have not gotten airborne yet but I feel the installation is solid and functional. Here's a picture of the gear in the open position. By modifying the Robostrut, I was able to fit it into the stock gear wells. I only had to cutout for the scissors strut. Flyboy1950

Here's the next picture. I used offset struts and allowed them to touch the bottom of the factory wheel well. The result is that the gear doors do not close 100%. I'm okay with that. Flyboy1950
