yee ha!!! i just took possesion of this gorgeous big 'stang this afternoon! man this plane is sweet,i also purchased a new o.s. 1.60FX to power it. ought to yank 'er around well. now all i need to get is a 5" aluminum spinner,and a bolly carbon 15.5x12 4-blade prop. she ought to be a screamer. later

I got on the list at my LHS and got a call this afternoon that it has arrived. I wont be able to pick it up till monday but until then could you tell us how the retracts look. I have a saito 180 for mine.

Just picked mine up yesterday, got it home and gave it a thorough inspection. The overall quality of this kit appears to be great, and other than a few minor wrinkles in the covering, I see no major flaws.

The retracts appear to be of good quality having metal frames. The pivot block appears to be of black delrin. I am going to look at using mini air cylinders instead of the retract servos to activate the gear.

Will try to post a few pics tonight. I have a NIB Saito 150 sitting here that I will probably install in it, but seriously looking at that Saito 200 TI

i have looked it over very well,and i don't think the WM can even compare to the quality of the hangar9 stuff. i have had a few of WM'S .40 size planes,and they were good kits,but i really don't think it is comparing apples to apples. the retracts look strong,but,i may look into air as well. i have a set of the gold century jet retracts gathering dust. i was going to put a 4-stroke on mine,but,these planes flew fast,sothat is why i choose the 1.60fx. besides,these big 2-strokes,with a slimline pitts,sound about as good at speed as the 4-strokes do. and,it would take an awlful lot of 4-stroke to make the power,and the rpm,of the 1.60fx. especially since i don't see the logic in giving $675-$700 for a 140dz! later

Thanks for the pic's, looks good. If one was to build per manual, do you think it will come out at the suggested weight or lighter. Please keep us posted on all progress and if you run into any snags.

Picked mine up at the LHS yesterday. Now to see if my spare Moki 1.80 will fit. Will also post pics. The kit looks great.

If possible I would like to see some pics of the new Mustang next to the 60-sized H9 Mustang, to get a better idea of the size difference.

Dave,

It is really hard to say what the all up weight will come in at, but my general consensus is that it should come in pretty close to the advertised weight of 13 -14 lbs. The components, meaning fuse , wing sections, etc... appear to be very lite-weight.

I guess the total weight will depend on engine selection and possible ballast to balance correctly.

One issue I have seen already will be the fitting of the lower cowl. This may not pertain to every kit, but the upper edge of my lower cowl section will need a little sanding to achieve a straight edge.

I was able to pick mine up today and the plane looks pretty good. The only things came to my attention were the retracts and the amount of rudder deflection.
I knows it's not scale flying but I like to do low, high speed knife edge passes. Doesn't appear to be much there.
As far as the retracts go, the wire is up to the task but it will have the same side to side wobble as it's little brother has. I will probably use shim stock glued to the sides to take up the play. I have not looked at the mounts yet so no comment there.
I also got a square 22oz tank instead of the oval one shown in the manual.
Hope to get started in the next day or two. Oh, check out the price at tower for a tru-turn 5'' P-51 spinner! I think I'll go with Dave Brown.

While going over this thing with fine toothed comb before starting assembly, I have found some more issues.
The biggest thing is the wing will not fully seat into the wing saddle. I will have to do some work here.
The next thing which I just hate is the hinge slots are not cut straight or centered on the control surface edge!!! Come on people!!!
I have taken care of the retract side to side slop but after test fitting into the wing its going to take some major bending of the pushrod to keep from rubbing on the wheel wells.
I am going to keep the tank, engine mount, wheels, and retracts. Everything else is going in the trash.
The soft Phillips head screws are worthless to me. I think the soft copycat robart hinge points are cute, but I'll opt for the real thing thank you. The chicken wire pushrods should not be used at all. After a trip to the lhs to get some good old Sullivan hardware and 4-40 rods I will begin assembly.
One last thing I might do since I have to modify the wing saddle is set the stab/wing at 0-0. The 60 size I had was not and I had annoying pitch changes with airspeed changes. Minus the above, the plane is covered well and looks cool sitting in the floor taped together. It is definitely going to look awesome screaming low down the runway.

I'd love to give you a flight report but I'm not even close to finishing. Retract installation has been a pain along with a few other things. Actually I don't have too much left but I'm going to install a robart retractable tail wheel.
With a Saito 180 on the nose, a 16" prop looks ridiculously small. I will post some in flight pic's when I get done.

i am installing the robart retractable tailwheel in mine as well,and i agree about the prop,i will be flying mine with an apc 18x8W first,and then installing an tru-turn p-51 5" aluminum spinner and a bolly 15.5x12 4-blade prop. don't know how it will do with the 4-blade,but that 1.60FX ought to pull the guts out of it with just a stick on the crankshaft. i will give a report when i get her done. later
