3003s should be fine for servos. I just have some cheapos from hobby king in mine that are comparable to a 3003...works fine.

For the flaps, I flipped one servo around and moved the pre-installed control horn inboard a little bit. It looks funny from the bottom as the horns are at different positions on the span of the flaps, but it works fine. I've probably got 100 flights on mine with this setup and haven't had any issues.

Hi Guys,

I am about to finish the assembly of my RV-8 electric propulsion . I do have a problem with the propeller and spinner : as recommended I bought the Power 46 BL Outrunner + 2 3/4-inch Spinner (DUB290). When I slide the spinner back plate on the propeller adapter, then the propeller, the screw thread is not long enough to screw properly the nut to secure the propeller ! Not like the picture on the assembly manual.
Did I do something wrong ? Do you have any tips to solve this problem ? Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem?? I can not see how the prop adaptor threaded shaft is even remotely long enough. I have slid on the prop adaptor, then the spinner (Dub390) as called for in the kit, then placed the 14x7 APC E prop on and guess what?? no threads to place the lock bolt on, not even one thread. Can someone help on this, Please??

Paul

Problem solved. The LHS where I shop got a hold of Horizon Hobby for me. Thanks Anthony!!! Anyway, Horizon is aware of this problem and are sending a prop adapter that is longer. I imagine they will now finally get around to doing a tech note update on this kit and incude that with the assembly manual. In case they dont, I will update this thread with the eflite part number when I get it. The big problem I had on this assembly was getting the flaps right due to Hanger 9 making the servo bay and subsequent mounting of the sevo the same on each side. A reversed servo would work just fine with a y connector. However, I opted to slave the gear channel to the flap channel (aux1) on my DX7. This was a hassel but a really good learning experience I would recomend more Dx7 owners undertake. It is really amazing what you can do with these radios compared to how limited you were with the old AM radio's I started out with.

All I have left to do on this plane is balance the plane, prepare my battery ends so they go on my esc, charge the batteris and go fly it. I may post a video of it, or at least some photo's. I am thinking with all the white on this plane I will add some checkerboard to the bottom of the wing to matche the vertical stab amd rudder.

Guys,

The Eflite prop adaptor number EFLM1926-L is what you need to complete the build using the Dubro 2-3/4" part number (Dub 390) as detailed in the assembly manual for this plane.

I am almost all ready to maiden this plane. I only had to ad 6 oz weight to the firewall to balance the plane and come in at weight for this ARF. I am also going to add some contrasting colors to the bottom of the wing. I will make a stop at the local vynil sign shop and have them cut me out some 1-1/2" red squares to checkerboard the bottom of the wing. Hopefully that will give some assistance in up/down orientation.

Paul

My RV8 was maidened tonight!! Just need to work on adjusting the flaps for the proper travel. Right now the deflection is way too much!! Plane flies great and came in just about 6-3/4 pounds with the 5s Lipo. Look forward to flying it this up comming Labor Day weekend. Of course weather permitting.

I'm just getting back into the hobby after 23 years, have already mastered my trainer, so, the RV 8 will be my next plane. I have the plane already, haven't started building it yet, but have read through the instruction book. The only worry I have so far is the flaps. From what I've read on here, lot's of guy's are having problems with them as far as installation and getting them working. I'll be using a Futuba 6EX radio, and have the "Y" harnesses and servo extensions. I'm really hoping it all just hooks up and works. Ideas-comments?

I see the radio does have servo reversing. Is that how you solve the flap issue?

I don't like using reversing y harness. i would either get a reversed servo or in the case of this airplane, I like the Go-Slo flap controller. When the flaps engage on this plane the nose will pitch up quickly. Your transmitter may also be able to slow the servos down. Its a good idea to mix in some down elevator.

tpl33 I just posted some questions (request for feedback) in a new post. I didnt see that this one had recent activity. I ordered my rv-8 yesterday from the lhs.

I will be particularly interested in how the flaps work out for you. I have never had a plane with flaps. And I crashed my revolver 59 on my first flight with new digital radio. I think it was tail heavy it flew that way and I was trying to get back down.

I had many flights on it and it was a pleasure to fly. I still plan to rebuild it.

Anyway, I will be interested to see how your build and first flights go.

I haven't started building yet. I have everything ready to go, but, we're getting all the flooring in our house redone. I don't want to get started and have to pack up and move things out of the way. I'm waiting until it's done, maybe a month or so. I just started flying again this past October after taking 23 years off, so, I'm currently flying the crap out of my Hibbico 60 trainer! I'll keep you posted.

I'll keep you posted.

I just maidened my RV-8 Saturday. It is a very nice-flying plane. I am like you in that I was flying a Nexstar previously and about 23 years before that, I was 13 and flying a Goldberg Freedom 20. I'm thankful to have RealFlight these days!
I only had a few minor issues with the build. First, the elevator linkage ... the routing is not as straight as it could be and this caused binding. I replaced the supplied pushrods with smaller diameter wire and used Dubro ball-links at the elevator. This greatly straighed out the paths and eliminated binding.
The tray that the elevator and rudder servos sit in is a little flimsy. Between the servos, I epoxied basswood spars above and below the plate. This stiffened it up considerably. I'm not sure it needed this as the warping that I saw was with the elevator servo before I addressed the binding pushrods.
I installed a larger, 12oz  fuel tank as I thought the 8oz was a little small. If you're running a four-stroke, the stocker is probably OK. I have a Saito .62 and I had enough fuel for over 25 minutes of mixed throttle flying. If you want to go for 12oz, the rectangular Sullivan RST fits nicely with just a small amount of material removal.
About the flaps, I use a rate reducer such as this: http://www.rcdude.com/servlet/the-17/Dionysus-Servo-Rate-Reducer/Detail, a regular Y-harness (only uses 1 channel), 1 normal servo and 1 reversed servo. I didn't try landing with the flaps today as the wind was somewhat gusty. I did drop them to the mid position on a slow pass and it slowed the plane without pitching up or down.
Ailerons: get as much travel as possible. I set the differential simply by installing the servo arm offset. I may try to reconfigure it with less or no differential as this plane's roll rate is pretty slow. The prescibed differential of UP aileron vs DOWN aileron is almost 2:1.
You will need a set of longer servo arms for the elevator, rudder and possibly aileron servos. If you go Hitec, the red servo arms are just the right size. As an aside, I am now a fan of Hitec. I bought some JR ST47BB servos for this plane. When I figured out what I needed for the flaps, I ordered a pair of Hitec 425BB's (one reversed). They are at the same price point as the ST47BBs but the Hitec servos are so much tighter. Having relatively large control surfaces combined with oversized servo arms makes the play in the JR servos very noticeable.
Last thing to note, is that if you go with a Saito .62 - .82, the template works for the engine mount. If you don't have the .82, double check before drilling and glueing in the throttle pushrod tube
It's an easy build and an easy flying plane. Good luck and enjoy!

My son gave me one of these NIB last birthday, so I finally got around to assembly the last month. Here are a couple pics:

Yep, it looks like everyone elses, lol. I put in the Saito 82 and it looks like balance will be close to the CG in the manual. Battery will have to be far forward, which is fine. I posted the pics mainly to show my cockpit...I made some partial seats with aluminum tubing and foam. Painted the foam flat brown and it looks a bit like leather. Small personal touches are just fun to make the plane your own. On the build, I had to cut my flaps off because the way they were hinged at the factory was heinous. They were so tight that the flaps would droop down after I turned power off to the servos. And while power was on, those servos were in stall trying to hold the flaps level. I put back in new CA hinges and took all the stress out of the servos. Am debating getting a new fuel tank. The 82 does not sip gas in my other two planes with this engine, so I might take the tank to the LHS and find a new one eventually. I can try the stock tank out first. NICE plane. I intend to add a few more graphics to the plane, but the real one with this scheme is just as plain as this model, except it has the N number on the fin. I have a T-28 with flaps and love to play with them on landings especially, so I am looking forward to doing so with the RV-8. A couple guys at the field had real RV's so this model should entertain them. Jon

It's done!! Balance came out right on the CG, happily. AUW is 120 oz = 7.5 pounds. Oh, I put an 8ch Airtronics receiver in it so I could use my SD-10G transmitter with the plane. I like the variable lever on each side of the xmitter...I am using the left one for the flaps. Pretty much set up with recommended throws from the manual, plus expo on the flight surfaces. Looking forward to the maiden soon. Jon

Seems like my own blog lately, haha. I always buy or assemble my ARFs too late or too slow compared to other guys, so the interest is waning by the time I get mine ready. Nonetheless, I took a few photos on the driveway today, and they show some extra stickers I put on the plane. I got the N number from the real plane the ARF copies, made it with vinyl on my Cricut. Used my Brother label maker to put my name and NO STEP warnings on the plane.

Hi guys just wanted to get your opinion on putting the new evolution 10 cc on this plane. Do you think it would be under powered? I have a Saito FG-14B but I can not get it to run right at all, this is not my first gas engine but that thing as been a nightmare to tune. Any thought or help would be greatful.

I bet it would run on the 10cc. I flew mine on the evo 46 the first year I had the planem it flew great. I switched to an eflite power 60 electric with 6 cells. That also flew well. I am now thinking about the 10cc myself. It has more power than the 46, more like a 60 size.

I also agree with the stripes on the wings. I did it also. It is way hard to see especially on a cloudy day.

There's a new used Saito 82a in there with one of those turbo mufflers that came with it. That type muffler with the 90degree elbow make it real easy to both enclose the muffler in the cowl, and also direct the exhaust out any hole you want to make in the cowl. Jon

I maidened my RV-8 today and had 4 flights in all. This is a great flying little plane and I am extremely pleased. I had to give it a few clicks of down trim, a couple of right aileron, on the first flight. On subsequent flights I increased expo on the elevator because it seemed a little sensitive. Also increased rudder throw for better stall turns and tighter turns on the ground. Rolls seem a bit slow, so I shall increase throws. The Saito 82a balanced the plane perfectly, and provided ample power. Vertical is strong but not unlimited. Flaps did not pitch the nose up nor down, but just caused the whole plane to rise slightly and of course slow down. My first landing was without flaps and still was slow and gentle. Landings with flaps were even gentler and just too much fun. Loops were as large as I wanted, inside and outside. Knife was easy and there was little tendency to roll more or less in KE, and there was a little push to the LG. Will work on programming that out in the future. Inverted needed just slight down stick to hold straight and level. Very nice plane that will be one of my faves. I am pretty ecstatic about it. It's pretty nice to have it given that almost any day at the field, there will be one if not 5 or 6 real RV planes fly overhead. Jon
