Hi all, I'm pretty new to this electric stuff, and am having a tough time trying to figure out what I want to use to power a small P-47 model I got at a swap meet. It spans about 36", is 26" long, and weighs 14 OZ empty. If I had to do a rough estimate, it has like maybe 230" of wing area? The original owner says he ran an 05 in it. However, I'd like to go brushless with lithium battery if at all possible. I called Hacker Brushless, and they suggested a B20 series 22L motor with 3 cell V-tech lithium batteries, and a
4.75" X 4.75" prop. I have no idea how big this motor is. The only decent LiOn's I know of are the ones sold by FMA. I didn't want to buy anything without talking to the resident experts here at RCU. Does it sound like this combination will work? Here's a pic, and a beer is shown for size comparison.....Thanks in advance for your help guys!

I have somthing pretty close to what you have. I am running a Mega 1615/4 on 8 cell cp1300scr or 10 cell 1100 HE.

The 8 cell with a APC 6x4 its about 60 mph with enough vertical to do BIG loops. Run time is about 7 min. With the 10 cell its about 75 t0 80 mph and unlimated virtical !!!! Run time is about 5 min.

I have tried a APC 7x4 on 8 cells and its about 70 mph with unlimted virtical and run time is 6 min.

The 6x4 pulls 15 amps with the 8 cell and 20 with the 10.
The 7x4 pulls 23 amp ( motor max ) with 8 cells.

If you want to go li-po you will have to go to a 3s2p 1200 e-tech pack ( $104 ) and prop down to about 10 to 15 amps. You would be lighter so the viertical would prob be ok and the speed should be good with about 15 min flights. Not to sure of the li-po's can take that kind of curent with out turnnig to jiffy pop. I am looking in to it. Might wait till they get a little cheaper be for i try to make pop corn. LOL.

Thanks for the reply man. What type of motor/speed control are you running, and where did you buy it from? What about the reciever and servo's? Those battery packs you mentioned are NiCads, or NiMhs? Thanks again for the info.

Sounds like a good project!

I would recommend a Mega 1615-6 or 7 turns and a graupner speed prop 7x7 for the 7 turn motor or a 6.5 X 6.5 for the 6 turn motor. A hacker 18-3p brushless controller and 10 - 1100 NiMH cells. You will get 6 to 7 minutes of full throttle and plenty of pull.

The hacker ESC has adjustable timing with 4 settings. The Jetti's do not, but I heard they just came out with a Jetti pro version that is adjustable. The timing advance in the controller is very much worth the extra $10.00.

I think most everybody is overlooking the advantages of the higher turn count Megas. You get in this mindset where it's a certain number of Amps for a certain weight and performance level. With more turns and steeper bigger props you get better efficiency, at flight speeds, getting the same performance on fewer amps, adding duration almost for free. The hacker 20L with the teeny prop is a wasteful inefficient suggestion for your airframe IMO. Most of your prop wash will be blasting the cowl. If it were mine. I would use the 7 turn mega, the 7x7 prop and full 30 degree advance on the controller timing. Low speed pull will weaken but that one isn't supposed to go slow anyway! it should pull in the 70's somewhere.

Electrics smell better than gas!

If you are a fast burner then the Li-Po are not yet there but
you can get good power out by paralelling them just watch
the cutoff voltage and charge voltage both are killers. CU

Not sure about how he getting this done but, I had spoken with someone at Espirit Models about their Diablotin XL, which I was told ran off a Hacker B50 10L, and he said he was flying it for 45 minutes off a Li-Poly pack that would run me in the $300 dollar range. I was more interested in the plane specs at the time, so I didn't press him for info on the battery pack. After researching them, I couldn't find a pack that would push more than 8 amps. I may just call him back up.
