I use popular wood. I get it from Lowe's here locally. Its in the wood section in the back. Wood for cabinet and furniture making. I get the 1/2 x 1 and rip it to what I need. I find it straight, lightweight, and is clean with no knots. Been using it for years and have no issues with it Its fairly cheap too.

Just my two cents and doesnt mean its the gospel.

For the wing tube material I would go with the 1/2" aluminum with the phenolic sleeves as it will
fit a lot better than the tube supplied in the old kits, an up grade I will be doing.

The spar material in my "AA" kit looks to be cut from pine, but I will be changing it
out for either spruce or basswood, don't like the grain of pine, it is also heavier than
the spruce or basswood. Laminating balsa with carbon strips is a great way to get
maximum strength with minimum weight, ala control-line model type of spar construction.

Like Warbirdguy I have also used poplar, when you can find it straight grained it is very useful
in model building.

Thats definately a need to do upgrade on the wing plug in. The old way was way too sloppy and heavy. Ive gotten tubes from TnT. I think on my next one, Im just using 1 tube and two alignment pins. I think that will be heavy enough to handle it

Thanks again for the file Bill.

I agree on the old tubes, very sloppy and heavy, my plans are to use a single tube up near the main wing spar
and a smaller tube which would extend two wing ribs each side of the outer wing panel seperation line. Also
seriously considering carbon fiber tubes also.

I think I am going to use spruce spars since I have plenty of them and I will use the balsa for another project.
Thank You for the replies.

Hello All
Don't want to jump the Gun. But I just came across a deal for a BN 310 with 2 gas motors on it.
I am supposed to pick it up this coming weekend. I know it will need some TLC
But I am excited about it. Once I get it Then I hope to become a member of the Club.
Will Post an update when I get it.

I think I am going to use a pair of FS 1.20s on this. I really don't plan on retracts and such and I will just use Monokote to cover, but I wonder if it will be overpowered with the 1.20s?
Thought about a pair of FS 91s and worried about UNDERpowering it. OH boy! Decisions, decisions...

Rob,

I'am flying one of mine on the 120's. they are not over powering but do have enough power to pull mine with retracts & brakes so if you can save some weight you will be fine. when i got it it had 3 blade props on it and it was marginal at best but switched to the 2 blade and have been fine since. this one is monocoated as well so agian i think you will be fine with that choice.

I'm using two Saito 1.20 four strokes on mine, Graupner three blade props, plenty of power to cruise at half throttle , with reserve power left. My 310 weighs right at 38 pounds, retracts, brakes, glassed and painted.

I'm still leaning towards Super Tigre 2300's at the moment. I need to get a hold of one and see how well it performs.

I love my Tigre's i just wish they had one between the G-90 and the G2300. .90 to 1.40 is a big jump.

May have to go with OS 108's if the G2300 puts out to much power for the 310.

Hopeing to get 19 pounds static thurst with a 3-blade prop out of the G2300.

Super Tiger 2300's would be a kick in the you know what on the 310, I have one in a quarter scale
Cermark Pitts S2-B and it hauls the mail effortlessly 16/8 3-blade prop on FAI fuel, exhausting through
a Bisson Pitts muffler but it is a little on the thirsty side, cruise around most of the time @ 1/2 throttle.

I will go with the 1.20s. I saw a video of a 310 on youtube that has .91s and it flew at 29 lbs but it looked a bit sluggish. I also want to be able to bring her home in the event one engine decides to poop out and I think the 1.20 would be able to do that. The .91 would have a problem.
Anyway I started cutting! Got all of the 1/4" ply pieces done and next I'll do the bulkheads which are 1/8" ply. I hate it when I start gaining momentum and have to stop for work or sleep or meals or potty breaks or paying bills or.... Well you get the idea... I could spend HOURS in the hole just working my tail off.
Time for bed now, work tonight.....

I have two OS .91s in mine... not sluggish at all IMHO. It cruises nicely at 1/2 to 5/8 power and one engine will certaily extend the shallow decent.... not a problem with the .91

... It's all about the optimun prop selection/pitch as well.

But, the pair of 1.20s would be just a little nicer.

It was originally designed to fly with two .60 size engines. Two .91s I think would be flyable. One engine out and the other should have enough power to fly it all the way to the scene of the crash LOL

1.20's should be plenty of power.

Hey I could fly it on .40's

If I where to make an all balsa, skeletonized open stick structure like an Sig Senior, clear Mica film covering, fixed wire gear, and mini servos.

Ok, so who's got some pictures or videos to post? I wanna see some more 310's in the air or at least some still shots. I promise you that when I finish this one there will be pics and videos of it.

Al, you're such a meanie, I don't know why I even talk to you.[>:] Yup, it's mine, Starla did a good job with the pics. I was hoping to get the strobe lights flashing in one of the pics that day, never did, they do look cool though.
What I should do is take some pics of that other one and post them, that'd make mine look like a real beauty. LOL I'd have to say it was one of your better ones and I bought it from you. LOL GOTCHA !!!!

Nice Delray!!! Thanks. Now guys,THATS the kind of motivation I need. It's not like Im excited enough to have this project in the beginning stages, but...well...
Got home from work this morning and rough cut all the ply formers for the fuselage. Next up will be all the ply wing parts then ribs. It's starting to look like I have a kit sitting here. Feel like a kid in a candy store.
