Nosen Cessna 310 Club

This club is being formed as a draw for those of us that have either built or are building the “Nosen Cessna 310” from either the Nosen or AA Industries kits or just plain scratch building from plans purchased or given to the builder. The purpose of this club is solely to bring together a “Brotherhood” of information that will help present and future builders of this wonderful looking twin civilian aircraft that was designed way back in the late 70’s early 80’s by Bud Nosen, a man with a passion for giant scale aircraft, and making them fly with the model engines that were available in that time period. Along with time and technology we have been able to build it better and make it fly much more gracefully with the tools, materials and engines we have available in the time warp we are presently in.

All you need to do to become a member of the “Nosen Cessna 310 Club” is forward your e-mail address with your first and last name, RCU screen name if different, state or country you live in to me at vdiedric@yahoo.com and I will assign your membership number which you can add to your signature line on RCU. I will occasionally publish the list with numbers and screen names only on RCU so that those building can see the list of who’s, who and be able to contact one another through PM’s or e-mails using the RCU Network.

Good morning "TooLow", seemed like a good thing to do, so that
experienced builders like yourself could lend a helping hand to all of
the guys out there, like myself, and we could all share info.

How about posting a few pics of your current flying Nosen 310 for
us if you don't mind.

Bill D.

Frankledan, I'll be darned, I have one that looks just like your two pics up overhead in my garage. That G&L glass stuff looks very tempting for my second one, if I ever decide to finish it. I bought it as is, mainly for all the extras that came with it.

Thanks Bill for organizing this group. It will be interesting to see how many Nosen 310's are still flying. I would love to know how many kits Bud and A&A Industries sold, what percentage were built and of course how many still survive. This 310 is now 27 years old. The full scale version of N3700G who's color scheme I copied was hangered at the local county airport in 1982. I checked on N3700G on the NTSB web page. It has been sold several times and found it was involved in at least 2 accidents!. The first was a failure to lower the landing gear when he touched down resulting in major damage. I believe it happened in Colorado. The pilot was fighting severe weather and simply failed to drop them. In the second accident the pilot forgot to switch back to the main tanks and ran N3700G out of gas. He landed north of Hatch, New Mexico in the middle of the desert. The gear stayed up, so it was recovered and I believe repaired.

As for the group I have been thinking of it for quite a while and have talked to my CA friend
TooLow on serveral occassions and decided to finally do it. I am currently in the throws of
gathering everyhthing together to start the build of my second one using the glass fuselage
made by Greg @ G & L Hobbies. I welcome any and all pics of any Nosen 310's be it in the
build or finished and flying state. I hope we can all band together to make this a very great
and informative club and build & show thread.

Hey Guy's this question was sent to me via thew RCU e-mail network,
maybe some of you can help Mark out with his answer.

I have been out of the hobby for such a long time, I was wondering if you could get me on track with a couple of items. 1) What is the aluminum spar system you guys are using on the wings? 2) I used to buy carbon fiber mat in a package that was about 12” wide and 32” long. About the size of a piece of copy paper 3x as long. I’ve got some pitiful weather for a few days so I thought I’d make hay on the 310. We were 85’F Wednesday. It’s 33’ right now. That’s ridiculous! Thanks

Mark

First I will say from what I have read on a lot of the threads about the 310 is that most are using 6" wheels so you have to move the tubes shown on the plans sheet out to the wing spar locations to have enough room for the larger tires. In my build that I will be commencing later this year, my plans are to use 5/8" forward & 1/2" rear aluminum tubing with the phenolic sleeves from TNT Landing Gears to secure the outer wing panels to the nacelle's and I am sure that carbon tubes would work just fine also. Another trick I have up my sleeve is to laminate the wing spars with a layer of carbon strip top & bottom, which will give quite a bit of rigidity to them also, this is what modern day control-line builders are doing with their wing structures.

Being that my first 310 was built in the late 80's would some of the members care to share some info on their retact mods they did to fit either the Robart or Centry Jet retracts.

Bill D.

Mark , I will see if i can get some pics to upload that might help you with the retracts . I used this system on my 310 using the Spring Air retracts . It would be very similar for the Robarts but the rail spacing would need to be adjusted for the Robart demensions

Glad to be onboard with BN C310 club. Thanks Bill, Information about this aircraft has already starting to flow through modelers. Now i feel sort of left alone as i traded my C310 for Ducted fans for my Arrow. Looks like more i hang with this group more i want to have another one of these. If anyone need suggestions or advice on repairs let me know, i'm here for ya.

ME TOO.....an update on the mains. use 5.5" mains for scale size. Dubro pt # 550TL. About $40.00 a pair. Here's an old pic of my 310. I plan on upgrading to the post 1975 long nose 310R version maybe next winter. I glued my wing panals into a one piece wing. If yours is already built with the alum wing tubes,,,your stuck with the flapping action because they fit too loose. Thats why I glued mine solid. Aleiron response went way up !! If your building, then go ahead and use carbon fiber wing tubes if you like, but stay away from the alum tubes that come with the kit. Space them out to fit 5.5" mains with some clearance for the wheel well walls. Other Bud Nosen threads ( By VMEEK) detail my nacelle roof to retract rail bridge support. Highly recomended modification.....Rick Simmons...... Gas engine beta tester for the Twin Sync.

CK1,

If i were you i would stay away from Spring air retracts for this bird. Previous owner and builder had Spring Airs on this C310 before i got it, out of 20 flights 12 had landing gear problems to failures on it, just coz he cheezd out on quality retracts due to gross weight of this model. That is why i wanted to go with fixed gears instead as Robarts as they are too expansive.

TooLow how about breaking the old camera out and getting us some detailed
pics of the 1: 1 Cessna 310F that you fly. I for one would really like to see
anything on the real one that you would care to post, would be an asset to my
build as I may just want to duplicate her in Nosen model size.
