I've always had the TD series and they seemed pretty strong. How does the Norvel .061 compare to the TD .09? How do they all compare to the TD series??

Thanks,
Bijan

norvel does better than td 051, but the cox 09 is a powerful engine. my current favorite is the norvel 074. it swings a 7-3, idles good, is muffled, 2.5 oz. runs on 15% nitro, and behaves like a 40 size motor. It doesn't have the raw h.p. of a pressurized 09 on 35%, but hey, what does? it is a lot quieter, though, and won't catch fire and burn your hand and airplane (yes, an 09 on crank pressure will ) and is not as gnarly.

Hey wild Fred, you sound pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. Thanks. I actually like the louder engines, makes the plane seem faster.....ha
So it looks like a pressurized 09 is the most powerful, huh? Is it tough pressurizing one?

Listen -

around here you are dealing with a kind of personal issue. We all get pretty fanatical about our engines, the guys that love the Norvels - LOVE the Norvels, and the (good) guys that know the truth and choose the Cox, well they love those darn little guys too.

I have had unthrottled Norvel .049's and TD .049's and it's really hard to tell which one is "stronger". The Norvel is definitely quieter, but I kind of like the scream. The Cox cowls better for scale stuff.

Now with throttle - the Norvels come stock with a really great carb and the throttle options for the Cox's are pretty varied but as Dickeybird has proved can work just as well as anything else. For the Cox's it just takes a little bit more work, but for me the options and acessories are part of the charm.

One thing that Cox has on Norvel is that they have the .020 and .010 in addition to the .049/.051 as well as the .09. The Norvel gives you a few more choices above the .049 with the .061 and the almighty .074.

Most of the guys who love the Norvels are in love with the .074 - it's the power of a .10 with 75% of the weight.

There are definently strong points to both sides - its really a matter of personal preference. It just depends on what you want.

on pressurization, I turn the crank so the carb opening is in line w/ the little tap on the side, drill through carefully, and flush out all filings. some guys disassemble. it tells how to tap in the instructions, I think. it gets better fuel draw, but floods easy. some guys use hemostats to pinch off pressure line so it doesn't flood. fine thread needle valves are supposed to be better on pressure setups, but I didn't use one. just wanted good fuel draw. it was hot on 35% and an apc 7-4. flew it once with 2 rubber bands (got distracted) and the wing flew off and in it went at speed, never ran right after that! was wicked, though. I flew it at the elizabethtown field, and henderson once. never flew it in lexington, but flew my .061 powered sig hummer there a couple years ago.

Prole hit it on the head. and I think the biggest drawback to the Norvel's is that they dont offer anything smaller than the .049

Other wise they are massively (in a small way) superbly, phenomenally, better than the tinker toy cox...

Good question, but it may be worded somewhat wrong.
By the answers everyone is giving, I think it might oughta read 'strongest small engines' or 'strongest engines under .10 disp.'

The points/engines mentioned above are all good ones, but a couple of other good choices have been left out.

The VA mkII .049 is an excellent performer (and a true half-A). AJCoholic has shown that it responds extremely well to the addtion of a true carburetor. It also responds well to the addition of a tuned pipe. They are available from Larry Driskill.

The ThunderTigre .07 appears to be a pretty good engine (have not had one myself, so take this with a grain of salt). Search for it on the forum and you should find some more experience people commenting on it.

Yes, and I just tried some Sig 35% in my throttled VA in the LCB with pipe. It throttles way lower now before it quits (no tach #'s but just going by sound).

There aren't any bad engines out there. It just depends on what you need them for. However, the engine that has the most going for it is the Norvel .074. It has the best power to weight ratio of any engine I know of. It has an effective, bolt-on muffler with reliable pressure to the tank. It throttles very well with no tinkering. For the quality, performance and service support, I think it's the best small engine ever. Most of my projects, current and future are biased towards the .074. If you're contemplating a plane for 1/2A, build it a tad bigger and use the .074. If your 1/2A turned out a tad heavy, just install the .074 instead of that favourite .049. For a relatively small increase in weight, you WILL have the power you need and want.

The only caution with the .074, and as with all the Revlite series, break-in requires care and a different technique.
