The Piccolo Tunning Blades on a HummingBird or a FP Piccolo, Do they work better than the standard Blades, Looking for low budget Mod's to improve my HBird I know about the Hornet Blades and The CF Blades for the Pic and Hbird just wondering if these Tunning Blades I've seen are any good Thanx

I tried the Piccolo Tuning Blades on my HBird. They worked but I wasn't impressed. They didn't fly as well as stock blades. I am now running Hornet FP CF blades and I'm not going back! The Hornet blades are definitely the way to go. Your heli will be much more responsive to stick input with the increased head speed.

Thanx Kenru , I was just hoped there was a cheaper way but I guess not, The Hornet blades seem to be the hot set up. You run a speed 300 right?, I'm asking because mine still seems to get quite hot, I'm not sure compared to the stock never ran it with the stock, But in my parkfliers the motors never seemed to get very hot and the temp on this 300 has me a little worried

Yep. I'm still running the Speed 300, 9-tooth pinion off of a GWS ICS-100E speed controller. The motor does get quite hot, but what the heck. I've been running it that way for quite a while and it's still spinning fine. The heat may eventually cause a premature motor failure but they're cheep to replace...

Thanx again Kenru, I was just wondering cause I have to check my Gyro Mount because the heat causes the glue to soften on the foam tape. I've got a Orion Elite comming for when I go LI-Poly in a couple of weeks so I'll keep you posted on how it works out

You will love the Li-Poly's. I have had over 30 minutes on a single charge when stop and go flying on my 1200 ETech's. 20 minutes easy when full time flying.

I had my gyro mounted up front for a while. I now have it attached to the plastic cover on the main-frame...

Just another Question about the CF Blades, How do the ones made for the Piccolo run any better than stock? And are they as good as the Hornet ones

The Piccolo Tuner blades I tried were just stock plastic ones. The Hornet blades I'm now using are MS Composite blades and they are very well made. Great balance "right out of the box".

The Hornet blades are narrower than HB or Piccolo blades and don't have a lot of pitch. This ends up increasing the head rotational speed which has very positive effects on flight. The stick response is much more positive and immediate. Additionally, when flying outside, decreasing altitude by reducing head speed reduces the control you have over the model (it can get pretty hairy). The Hornet blades keep the head spinning faster, giving you more control. The Piccolo blades are very much like stock HB blades (at least from what I've seen). I don't see any advantage in trying those...

Then I guess it's the Hornet Blades or Bust literally! Thanx Kenru. I noticed that decrease in control on throttle down in fact I picked up a bit of a bad habit from the Sim I was running, The micro in that was a CP Heli and when I got out of sorts I'd just cut the throttle and it'd just touch down. Not good when flying an HBird, it just drops

I have aset of the MS CF blades on my FP HBird. So far they havent worked well at all.

When i give the HB power they are fine for a minute or so, then a strange brrr type noise appears, the blades seem to be flexing and the lift is gone! Anyone come across this problem and have a suggestion for fixing it? Blades were to date the most expensive backward upgrade ive tried!

Help greatly appreciated - thinking of trying the Head brace to see if its that bit which is flexing.

wildebeast,
Are you running a head stiffener on your bird? (see http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=115398 for more info.) It almost sounds like you are picking a harmonic vibration from the increased RPM's. The head stiffener should keep the flex out of it. Make sure too that the fly-bar (without the main blades attached) is balanced as well.

Good luck!

Hi wildebeast. I'm very familiar with the loss of MR blade performance, with that low-pitched 'Fluttering' sound. I spent a day troubleshooting my HB once, blaming batteries, motors, everything . Then, after glancing over to the HB assy/op manual (PDF doc), here's this picture of how to bend the HB (plastic) blades to increase pitch -- I did that and WHAM! the bird almost hits the ceiling : So, if you can increase the pitch on those MS CF blades, by all means, try it.

There's a thread on one of the other forums containing a 3 min Video of Steve from OK flying his HB with the CF Hornet blades outdoors so they work fine once they're set-up.

He mentions that he used a tubing type shim in installing those blades. I think the Hornet CF blades' mount holes are reasonably smaller than the HB's Rotor Hub's blade interface features. You might be losing some needed blade pitch in your installation. 'Don't know, but rather doubt that you can bend the CF blades for pitch increase the way you can with the HB plastic blades? I've found I needed to do this every few days to keep the HB lifting-off easily. Surely there's someone on this forum who can jump-in and advise you on the CF blade mod.

Good Luck
J.R.

The CF MS FP blades are quite a precision piece of work. The stock plastic blades are all over the place. I think the two experiences are quite different...(IMHO)

Well after flying (at least trying to) the HBird for a couple of more days now I'm convinced that the MS Hornet Blades would be a welcome addition to my Heli Kenru, I've noticed when the head speed is up I've got more and better control but with the stock blades it also means I'm climbing to get that control and the second you drop even a little below Hover you've all but lost it. So as soon as I can I'm ordering some for sure!
