This maybe a stupid question but bear with me i am a newbie. I wanna mount a wireless camera to my plane and i realize that the reciever has to get the signal but does the reciever have to be connected to anything? it looks like it would have to be connected to a vcr to record, but how is that possible when i am flying 3 miles from my home? I searched all over but no one mentions this? or are the vids stored in the reciever then downloaded to your comp? thanks.

I use my camcorder to record my video. Most newer ones will have a line in. I just run the video out on the receiver to a Y connection and from there to both my camcorder and a portable TV. My camcorder (digital Sony) has an LCD screen that you can watch the video feed on but its kinda hard for the whole crowd to watch at once which is why I got the TV. The TV is mostly for the spectators and not needed for the video recording itself. If your camcorder has a VCR function you are all set. My father uses his this way also and its non-digital so you dont need a digital camcorder to do this. The digital part is just nifty as hell for editing the footage on your computer!
My setup at the field is this:
Receiver mounted on the top of a PVC pole to get the antenna up above head height to cut down on interference. Power lead and signal lead running down to the flight box and a table holding my camcorder and the TV or just the camcorder sitting on top of the flight box if Im at the slope.

Plug in the power for the video camera, tune in the signal to the camcorder, start the camcorder recording and heave the plane off the slope. I just let the system run while I fly the plane and kill the recording once I land.

Im afraid so. The system is just a camera, transmitter, and receiver with no storage capacity whatsoever.

are there any other options besides an expensive camcorder. keep in mind it has to be battery powered since there is no outlet at the park.

Well, there are portable TVs with integral VCRs that might work provided they have AV inputs but I havent priced any of these nor do I know if they would work off 12v although you could use a power inverter to get 110 volts AC.
Camcorders themselves have come down quite a bit in price. All you need is one that lets you dub video back and forth. Doesnt need to be digital at all. The VHS-C ones are about the least expensive. I realize that less expensive is a relative term when on a budget.
Other than that, nothing else comes to mind, unfortunately.
Know anyone you can borrow one from?

I've used a Panasonic TV/VCR combination that runs on 12v or 110 VAC to record video from my sorities. It has good color quality, a nice remote, and is well built. I can't remember what I paid for it, sorry.

I have bought an old "non-working' VHS camcorder on E-bay for six bucks (pus $5 shipping). These old type VHS camcorders (RCA, Panasonic GE) have RCA input integrated with 120V power supply, which can be easy converted to 12V (just bypass 120V impulse transformer circuit). I didn't care for camera part and I was hoping VCR part is working. Hopefully it turned out that the "non-working" meant "dirty head"

It's not a perfect setup, but it works OK and it's cheap.

If you have enough space in your car, you can also take you home VCR (they a so inexpensive now) and power it using 12/120V inverter (I have powered my camera that way, before I hack it's power supply to run from 12V). They run OK and don't disturb RF link.

I recently bought a Sansui 14" AC/DC (12 V) TV with built in VHS VCR exactly for this purpose. $200 CDN.

Plan to run it off the motorcycle battery in my field box, or possibly car cigarette lighter if the motorcycle battery runs dry too soon.

Haven't bought the video cam/tx/rx yet - waiting to get my old 0.40 sweetstick flying first. Looks like i need a new engine but once that's going, then video is next.

If I had known when I started, I would have bypassed the VCR/TV combo and went straight to my digital camcorder! I must diagree about the quality of VHS. I also carry so much less to the field! So if I could offer my opinion to anyone reading this, look around, find a good deal on a digital camcorder (I found mine on pricegrabber.com for $384.00) and you will not be sorry.
Make sure it has analog RCA inputs, and get a long life battery!
