Hey Mike,

I finally got the cable - I'm fully connected to the software.

Now how do I get it to work 100%.. I tried to calibrate my DX7 but when I go to the calibrating area it seems like there is already movement. The red bars are constantly moving and spiking on their own - if I move the knobs on the DX7 some of the red bars move and go up and down - but others stay moving constantly and I feel like it's distortion or something. It definitely doesn't look like it's supposed to be doing this.. The bars are moving very fast and even some are flickering like it's struggling to get a signal or is possible getting interferance from somewhere.

I also went to the controls area and checked out the transmitter settings.. Again the red bars on the bottom are fluctuating on their own (without me even touching the controls) and also the black dots are filled out in some sort of predefined pattern (I didn't put this in here). What pattern should be in here for my DX7 and your basic heli setup.. Keep in mind I'm new to this and have never flown my Trex 450 so I'm not really keen on what does what yet - is there anyone that can possibly take a screenshot of their control settings with the DX7 and show it to me?

I really feel like there is still some calibrating to do and/or some fixing because if I push fly and go into the flight area - the heli takes off completely by itself and it feels like I have no control whatsoever. I have the DX7 setup to my Trex perfectly, everything should be dialed in on my radio - now it just need to be dialed in on the software and I don't know how to do that.

Mike if you or anyone else can help with this - it would be greatly appreciated. I finally received all the cables and got it all working and now I have to get it working on the software side lol.. Help!

Thanks everyone.. I can't wait to practice lol.

Well done, Abron. Just a short note: If you have set dual rates in your radio, calibrate at high rate.

dale, I would recommend that you get the usb interface version such that you could use all the programmable features in your radio e.g. mixes, dual rates, etc.

Thanks for that, the ony thing is that I travel a bit and would rateher take the controler with me than my transmitter. This is why I would like the option to have both. I also have an old G2 controller will that work with the MAC version of AFPD?

dale, if you decide to get the game commander version, you would have to get the ikarus slave usb interface cable and an adapter cable for the DSX. You would have to plug in both the GC and the slave cable into separate usb ports. Sorry, I don't provide support for the RF controller

Hello, am considering purchase of Aerofly for the Mac. Have read a number of the relevant forums, but many questions remain before purchase and up date of Mac Tower Pro. These questions are best directed to Mike Marks (but please, would like opinions/differing views from others). Numbers are provided to make it easy to answer each one, or refer to a specific question you want to offer an opinion on:

1) What is the difference between Aerofly pro deluxe and Aerofly 5? Apparently both are available for the Mac. One is sold in the US, the other remains cloistered in Europe.

2) Do both allow importation of the many free models that have been developed mostly by German aeronautical programmers at various websites? Do these free models work on the Mac? If you are going to import free models and develop your own, is one a better choice than the other?

3) Since I want to get many years of use, am willing to spend more now for top of the line product. If so, which should I buy? Does this version include all of the add ons? Should I wait for AF5 to be released in the US?

4) Would like to do some programming to modify existing models, or actually make my own: Flair Tiger Moth, Ziroli Staggerwing, Flair Stearman. There is already a Tiger Moth in one of the add-ons that could be modified to the Flair model parameters. The German web sites show on-line workshops for building your own models, some in English. Key question: Does all the software required to make your own models in Aerofly also work on the Mac? Or, is this "model building and construction software" pretty much limited to Aerofly running under the Windows operating systems (System 7, Vista)?

Have a Mac pro Tower (MA356LL/A), not the most recent, circa early 2008. It has 4 GB of Ram, 2.8 Ghz Quad core CPU. The current video card is Geforce 7800, inadequate for Aerofly. Should I:

5) Update ram to 8 GB?

6) Update video card to ATI 4890, ATI 4870 or Geforce 270 or 280, GTX-285, Nvidia FX 4800? Am allowed 300 watts of dissipation in the PCI express slot for the video card; PSU is about 900 watts total. Can you recommend ATI over Geforce? Which brand runs Aerofly the best? A specific card recommendation is appreciated. Plan to buy the Apple 30 inch Cinema monitor, refurb.

7) Plan to dedicate one solid state drive to OSX Snow Leopard, a second to Widows (System 7 or XP) and a third to backup. Since Xeon machine will have Windows, does it actually make better sense to buy a Widows version of Aerofly? If so, should it be Windows 7 or XP?

8) If Aerofly runs better under Windows, does it have to be run in a dedicated windows session (that is, the computer is booted exclusively by bootcamp into Windows at start up), or can it be run under OSX, in a Snow Leopard window, using using one of the popular windows simulators?

9) Has anyone compared Aerofly running natively under OSX alone, versus Aerofly running natively under Windows, versus Aerofly in a Windows Window running under OSX? Would be interested in knowing which runs best, and user impressions/comparisons.

10) Are there many bugs running Aerofly under OSX? Are bugs being ironed out to the point where the product is perfectly usable and stable at present? Or do users recommend waiting?

11) There is a required adaptor cord if you want to use a JR transmitter. Will this cord, available at Tower or Hobby Lobby, work with a JR 8103 transmitter? The Ikarus website does not state that the cord is compatible with a JR 8103.

12) Am very concerned about one user on the Aerofly forum who reported virtually no help, or very poor direct technical support from Ikarus. Are support problems for Mac users in English being resolved? This is important, because I owned G2 from Real Flight for 7 years, and received very spotty and often poor support. Because of this, a switch to Aerofly seemed attractive. But if support is poor from Aerofly as well, it may not be worth switching.

phoon, my answers in brackets below:

1) What is the difference between Aerofly pro deluxe and Aerofly 5? Apparently both are available for the Mac. One is sold in the US, the other remains cloistered in Europe.

[You'll find more info here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9159011/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm and http://www.aerofly.com/index.html ]

2) Do both allow importation of the many free models that have been developed mostly by German aeronautical programmers at various websites? Do these free models work on the Mac? If you are going to import free models and develop your own, is one a better choice than the other?

[AF5 uses new technology for its graphics and flight physics engines. As such, 3rd party models and sceneries designed for AFPD will not work with AF5. However, IPACS and 3rd party developers are working on conversion programs from AFPD to AF5. Also, more models and sceneries will be made available for AF5 by IPACS through free downloads and expansion packs.]

3) Since I want to get many years of use, am willing to spend more now for top of the line product. If so, which should I buy? Does this version include all of the add ons? Should I wait for AF5 to be released in the US?

[The AFPD Platinum version includes all addons (1-5). You can get AF5 directly from Ikarus Germany]

Or, is this ''model building and construction software'' pretty much limited to Aerofly running under the Windows operating systems (System 7, Vista)?

[Most 3d modelling softwares are for windows only. Cinema 4d is available for Mac os x which can be used to construct AF5 models. but it does cost quite a bit.]

Have a Mac pro Tower (MA356LL/A), not the most recent, circa early 2008. It has 4 GB of Ram, 2.8 Ghz Quad core CPU. The current video card is Geforce 7800, inadequate for Aerofly. Should I:

A specific card recommendation is appreciated. Plan to buy the Apple 30 inch Cinema monitor, refurb.

[You can find the minimum and recommended requirements for AF5 here http://www.aerofly.com/requirements_en.html and for AFPD here http://www.aerofly.com/afpd/requirements.html ]

[Run the windows version in windows, and mac version in mac. Runs fine in windows xp, vista and 7]

8) If Aerofly runs better under Windows, does it have to be run in a dedicated windows session (that is, the computer is booted exclusively by bootcamp into Windows at start up), or can it be run under OSX, in a Snow Leopard window, using using one of the popular windows simulators?

[AFPD mac runs native mac. No need for bootcamp or parallels]

9) Has anyone compared Aerofly running natively under OSX alone, versus Aerofly running natively under Windows, versus Aerofly in a Windows Window running under OSX? Would be interested in knowing which runs best, and user impressions/comparisons.

[Ditto]

10) Are there many bugs running Aerofly under OSX? Are bugs being ironed out to the point where the product is perfectly usable and stable at present? Or do users recommend waiting?

[No major bugs since the latest patch. In any case, the IPACS team are continuously addressing any issues and they will release patches as necessary]

11) There is a required adaptor cord if you want to use a JR transmitter. Will this cord, available at Tower or Hobby Lobby, work with a JR 8103 transmitter? The Ikarus website does not state that the cord is compatible with a JR 8103.

[The Ikarus y-adapter can be used for both JR and Futaba radios]

12) Am very concerned about one user on the Aerofly forum who reported virtually no help, or very poor direct technical support from Ikarus. Are support problems for Mac users in English being resolved? This is important, because I owned G2 from Real Flight for 7 years, and received very spotty and often poor support. Because of this, a switch to Aerofly seemed attractive. But if support is poor from Aerofly as well, it may not be worth switching.

[If you need any help, just post it in this support forum and I'll do what I can to help]

Mike, I'll join you in that cold beer.

Your excellent and prompt tech support is very much appreciated, and it means that I have a go-to gentleman to get issues resolved. I'm very favorable toward getting an Aerofly simulator soon. I'm already acting on the valuable information you provided.

I have three remaining questions. No rush; I have yet to order components to rebuild this computer so as to get the most out of Aero Fly:

13) I note that there are active forums for the Aerofly products at their website in German, undoubtedly loaded with useful information. I served at a workcamp one summer in Bavaria in the 1960s, but my German is totally kaput. Can you describe how to set up the google translation system so that I can translate these forum comments into English?

14) I live at close to 9000 feet above sea level, and my flying field is at 9400 feet up, ten minutes away. Can this altitude be modeled in Aerofly? The altutude density here, 7 miles from the continental divide, is often 25 to 30 percent less than that at sea level in Gainesville, Florida. The flight character of model and full scale aircraft flying up here is quite different than at sea level, and this is an important feature I need. I noticed that in studying over the Aerofly 5 wesite, one airport that is modeled after the South West where Barbara and I backpack, has accompanying numbers in metric stating it is about 2000 meters high. That is about 6000 feet up, typical of many altitudes in the American Southwest, but 3000 feet less than my altitude here at home. So, am thinking it may be possible to insert altitude. Do you know how this is done in Aerofly 5 and/or AFPD?

15) Users have made comments that Real Flight no longer accurately models the flight character of many aircraft sold with it. In order to boost sales of actual model aircraft, for example the warbirds, Real Flight is said to make these model airplanes easier to fly on their simulator than they actually are in practice. Is it the Aerofly company's philosophy to honestly and accurately model parameters (to the extent technically possible)? Can you state that Aerofly does NOT follow such deceptive marketing strategies? Does Aeerofly accurately model the flight character of model planes?

Got my AFPD for Mac yesterday and was really enjoying it. THEN..after about 2 hours use..my transmitter died. AFPD can no longer find the transmitter although the Airtronics rd6000 looked to be operating. The transmitter screen works and it has all the correct beeps. I put the crystal back in and checked it on a real airplane.....No Good. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Any suggestions for what I might try next...or do I shop for a new Tx? Right now I can't fly either the simulator OR the real thing

[IPACS is a professional and highly qualified team which have been involved in flight simulator development for many years and constantly working on cutting edge technologies for model flight physics and graphics]

Hope this helps

Phoon, If I were you I would get Aerofly 5 from overseas. I have AFPD and l love the software. I am going to order Aerofly 5. I have tried most of the higher end simulators on the market and I think Aerofly is the best. You can not go wrong with this system. It might not provide you with all of your needs but it will come close plus the AFPD & the Areofly 5 forums will help with any questions you have. Mike has done a good job answering all your questions. Hope you buy him a drink someday.

One thing I like about Aerofly is that it isn't run by people with "other" interests in mind, like selling their planes.
Even without "easying" them the "other sims" rarely include more than aircraft that their sister companies sell.

By default, it comes in mode 2 but you can convert it to mode 2 by making some simple mechanical adjustments inside.

I noticed on the ikarus online store there is a mac version of AFPD upgrade to AF5, if i order this will i need to get a new cable as well or will it use my AFPD cable as the key? will this give me full access to all of the features in AF5 and will it import my older planes as well?

Rieter, the AF5 upgrade does not include any cable as you will be using the AFPD cable. AFPD models and sceneries are not compatible with AF5. New models are available through patches which you can download for free, and third party models will be available in the future.

I'm closing this thread but I'll leave it here for reference. For any questions on AFPD Mac, please start your own thread. Thanks
