phoon, my answers in brackets below: 1) What is the difference between Aerofly pro deluxe and Aerofly 5? Apparently both are available for the Mac. One is sold in the US, the other remains cloistered in Europe. [You'll find more info here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9159011/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm and http://www.aerofly.com/index.html ] 2) Do both allow importation of the many free models that have been developed mostly by German aeronautical programmers at various websites? Do these free models work on the Mac? If you are going to import free models and develop your own, is one a better choice than the other? [AF5 uses new technology for its graphics and flight physics engines. As such, 3rd party models and sceneries designed for AFPD will not work with AF5. However, IPACS and 3rd party developers are working on conversion programs from AFPD to AF5. Also, more models and sceneries will be made available for AF5 by IPACS through free downloads and expansion packs.] 3) Since I want to get many years of use, am willing to spend more now for top of the line product. If so, which should I buy? Does this version include all of the add ons? Should I wait for AF5 to be released in the US? [The AFPD Platinum version includes all addons (1-5). You can get AF5 directly from Ikarus Germany] 4) Would like to do some programming to modify existing models, or actually make my own: Flair Tiger Moth, Ziroli Staggerwing, Flair Stearman. There is already a Tiger Moth in one of the add-ons that could be modified to the Flair model parameters. The German web sites show on-line workshops for building your own models, some in English. Key question: Does all the software required to make your own models in Aerofly also work on the Mac? Or, is this ''model building and construction software'' pretty much limited to Aerofly running under the Windows operating systems (System 7, Vista)? [Most 3d modelling softwares are for windows only. Cinema 4d is available for Mac os x which can be used to construct AF5 models. but it does cost quite a bit.] Have a Mac pro Tower (MA356LL/A), not the most recent, circa early 2008. It has 4 GB of Ram, 2.8 Ghz Quad core CPU. The current video card is Geforce 7800, inadequate for Aerofly. Should I: 5) Update ram to 8 GB? 6) Update video card to ATI 4890, ATI 4870 or Geforce 270 or 280, GTX-285, Nvidia FX 4800? Am allowed 300 watts of dissipation in the PCI express slot for the video card; PSU is about 900 watts total. Can you recommend ATI over Geforce? Which brand runs Aerofly the best? A specific card recommendation is appreciated. Plan to buy the Apple 30 inch Cinema monitor, refurb. [You can find the minimum and recommended requirements for AF5 here http://www.aerofly.com/requirements_en.html and for AFPD here http://www.aerofly.com/afpd/requirements.html ] 7) Plan to dedicate one solid state drive to OSX Snow Leopard, a second to Widows (System 7 or XP) and a third to backup. Since Xeon machine will have Windows, does it actually make better sense to buy a Widows version of Aerofly? If so, should it be Windows 7 or XP? [Run the windows version in windows, and mac version in mac. Runs fine in windows xp, vista and 7] 8) If Aerofly runs better under Windows, does it have to be run in a dedicated windows session (that is, the computer is booted exclusively by bootcamp into Windows at start up), or can it be run under OSX, in a Snow Leopard window, using using one of the popular windows simulators? [AFPD mac runs native mac. No need for bootcamp or parallels] 9) Has anyone compared Aerofly running natively under OSX alone, versus Aerofly running natively under Windows, versus Aerofly in a Windows Window running under OSX? Would be interested in knowing which runs best, and user impressions/comparisons. [Ditto] 10) Are there many bugs running Aerofly under OSX? Are bugs being ironed out to the point where the product is perfectly usable and stable at present? Or do users recommend waiting? [No major bugs since the latest patch. In any case, the IPACS team are continuously addressing any issues and they will release patches as necessary] 11) There is a required adaptor cord if you want to use a JR transmitter. Will this cord, available at Tower or Hobby Lobby, work with a JR 8103 transmitter? The Ikarus website does not state that the cord is compatible with a JR 8103. [The Ikarus y-adapter can be used for both JR and Futaba radios] 12) Am very concerned about one user on the Aerofly forum who reported virtually no help, or very poor direct technical support from Ikarus. Are support problems for Mac users in English being resolved? This is important, because I owned G2 from Real Flight for 7 years, and received very spotty and often poor support. Because of this, a switch to Aerofly seemed attractive. But if support is poor from Aerofly as well, it may not be worth switching. [If you need any help, just post it in this support forum and I'll do what I can to help] I need a cool beer now
