Hi all,

I remember taking apart an OS 40 many years ago, it seemed pretty easy. Today, though, I decided my Raptor 46 needed to be torn down and cleaned out.

The muffler, cylinder head and back plate came off easily, but now I'm stuck... what should I be doing next? Nothing else seems to want to come off very easily.

Lastly, any plug recommendations for this engine? Performance is similar to a Webra 50.

Thanks,
Keith

Turn the crank till it is at bottom dead center. Slilde the connecting rod off the crank. You should be able to push the piston/sleeve up and out of the case. Then a very easy tap on the front of the crank should dislodge it out of the case. Don't forget to pull the drive washer off first.

Thanks for the tip. That makes sense. I'll give it a try tonight.

How far should I go with the tear down to clean it ? The engine doesn't idle well and there's some gunk at the top of the cylinder head. There was zero gunk at the bottom of the crank case. Should I just remove the piston and sleeve and clean those with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol?

Thanks for the help.

Keith

What kind of gunk are talking about? There will be blackening of the top of the piston and the sleeve. This is from the oil in our fuel. If thats all it is, I wouldn't worrty about it.

If idle is a problem, take the carb apart and check for trash in the fuel passages. Also check your low end mixture. May just be a minor adjustment on low end.

What does the engine do? Does it die immediately with throttle advance? Does it burbble (sp) during transition to top end?

The gunk is a viscous, black substance living on the edge of the cylinder head. I can see it rubbing against the sleeve as the piston moves up and down. I figured that might be hurting the idle a bit, but it sounds like you're thinking it's more likely in the carb.

The idle mixture seems a bit touchy. I had the high end singing like a Yukon bear trapper on his annual trip to a brothel....but when I came down to the low end, sat there for a bit, then opened it up, it would stutter heavily, clearly too rich. I leaned out the idle mixture a quarter turn...then it would just die on the transition instead of slobbering....too lean. Richened (if such a word exists) 1/8th of a turn, sounded better. I was able to transition back and forth, it sounded good. On about the 4th or 5th transition, it would just die again. Now, I suppose it could be too lean, but I guess I'm concerned because with past engines, I don't recall having to go down to 1/16th of a turn granularity.

Lastly, is there a way to check for a air leak in the carb? The engine seems to run even with the throat so close to closed, it's not funny. In its defense, though, I can pull the throat 'even more closed' (bring the throttle trim down a few notches, or hit the 'cut' button) and the engine stops...so maybe there's no leak, it just doesn't need much of an opening to run.

Thanks again for your help.

Keith
